Description

Patented Get. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
DAVID WARREN LYNCH ANI) RAYMOND S. LYNCH, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
nnsx.
Application led February 2, 1923. Serial No. 616,552.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, DAvID W. LYNCH and RAYMoND Sr. CLAIR LYNCH, citizens of the United States, residing` at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel improve ment in desks suitable for children, and also susceptible of embodiment in larger form for use by draftsmen, artists, and others where a light and portable writing or work support is desired.
To that end the invention contemplates, a simple, practical and reliable construction that may be economically manufactured and assembled, and which in use will provide a substantial and comfortable combined writing surface and seat, thereby providing` in a single article of furniture the necessary requisites for comfortable writing,l study, work or play.
A further object of the invention isto provide a construction that may be readily taken apart for shipment and packing, and yet which in its assembled form is especially stable and well-balanced.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists, in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved desk.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross sectional view.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view showing the manner in which the top may be held in adjusted position with reference to the supporting bar.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying the invention into effect, it is proposed to provide a light and substantial combined desk and seat that is readily port able and therefore particularly adaptable for childrens use, and yet capable of being made large enough for use y draftsmen,
artists and the like withoutV departing from the essential features of the invention.
Referring to the embodiment shown in the drawings, it will be observed that the device consists of a suitable frame F including the leg members l and 2 connected near their lower ends by a cross piece 3 while the upper portions thereof are held in assembled relation by a relatively wide and substantial yoke member 4. The upper ends of the leg members l andy 2 preferably project above the yoke member 4 and have pivoted therebetween as indicated at 5 the apron member 6 of a desk or writing shelf 7, the same being of suitable length and width according to the character of the intended use of the device and preferably provided at its near side withl a strip 8 which provides a rest or ledge for papers, pencils, or like articles.
The lower side of the yoke member 4 is preferably notched or cut away as indicated at 9, the bottom wall of the notch being inclined as indicated at l0 to facilitate the reception of a supporting bar l1, the lower end l2 of which is designed to rest upon the floor or other surface, thereby providing one of the supporting feet for the device, while the upper end 13 thereof constitutes an abutment or rest for the underside of the top ',7, for normally supporting the latter in position for use as a desk.
titi
As will be seen from F igurc 3 the portion of the bar ll which lits within the notch 9 is preferably provided with a socket 14 for receiving a relatively stout screw 15 which penetrates the yoke member 4 and serves to rigidly and firmly hold the bar 11 in position without twisting, rocking or canting thereby providing an especially rigid interlocking connection between the bar and the yoke member. That is to say the bar 1l has a tight or snug fit in the notch 9, and one side edge thereof bears firmly against the inclined bottom 10 of the notch so as to insure that the bar l1 and frame F are assembled in properly inclined relation, thereby providing adequate support and stability for the desk top, and also providing adequate support for the seat member S carried by the bar.
In connection with the seat member S it twill be observed that the same is preferably provided with a notched or bifurcated front portion which provides the ngers f6 for straddling the bar 11, and the said fingers 16 are provided 4With openings k17 for registering with the openings: 18 fof Elthe bar 11, thereby to receive a locking pin 19 for holding the seat in position. As,V `Will be seen from Figure "3, 'the 'portion of the seatbetWeen the fingers 16 is preferably beveledlas indicated at 20 to enable the seat to engage the upper edge of thebar 11 .in :such amanner that the seat will be held in horizontal position, and byproviding'theseries of adjustment'fopenings 18 in. the bar 11, it Will be apparent that the sea-t S may be placed in any one-of a number of' positions to adj ustthe -saimeproperly With-reference to the top or Writing shelf 7.
1f desired, the underside of the top may -be provided With-anysuitable adjusting meansrsuch for example as the link 21, the fsa-me beingfpivotally carried as at 22 -bythefunderside of the top 7*' and having the slot 23 engaging over a stud 24 and'adapti ed to be clamped in position by the Wingnut 25. This arrangement permits ofthe top 7 ybeing adjusted tothe desired incline, and may be especially useful to artists or draftsmen-since it provides in efl'ec't an easel upon Which-the Work .may be supported.
From the foregoing Ait will be apparent that the present invention provides in effect a tripod support, one =of the members of which adjustably carries the seat S ivhile the others ;pivotally tcarry vthe -top 7. Also, it --Will ybe apparent that Vthe device is made insuch a Way that it `may be `readily taken apart, or knocked fdovvn to facilitate its transporta-tion, shipment, or-stora'g'e. That `is .to say by simply removing the fastening screw y15 the frame F and bar 11 'may be separated, and 'by removing the pin r19=the -seat may be detached from Ethe bar, Whereupon. the top for Writing yshelf '7 may be skilled-in the art and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion Land y other details of construction may be resorted to ivithout departing from the spirit. of the invention or scopeofthe appended claims.
1. A desk of the class described, including in combination, a supporting frame having a. transverse yoke memberat its lipper end, `said yoke member being provided With a. notch at its bottom edge, a. desk top pivotally carried by the upper` end of the frame, a supporting bar fitting 'into `said n-otc'h and extending upwardly to provide a rest fforsaid'top and fits lower end providing la supporting foot, imeans for securing the bar in said notch, a seat'carried 4by the inteimediate portionof the bar, anduneans for adj usting the stoprmember with :refer-` encetto the upperend'of thebar.
2. A desk of the classdescribed including a frame having supporting feet, ratop member :pi-voted to the `upper end vof said frame, an intermediate yoke -member', 1 and a supporting bar having .its intermediate'portion interlocked ivi-th said yoke member and the opposite yends :thereof respectively constitutingan :abutment 'upon Which the pivoted 'top may rest and fa supporting foot, -and a seat .carried the 'supportingibaiz In testimony whereof we Ihereunto afiix kour:signatures.
