Appncafion' inea April i0, 1924. serial No. 705,518.
To all 'whom t may 00m-ern Y Be it known that I, GEORGE W. "WENTZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ot Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Tees, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a soil sanitary tee, and it has as one of its objects the provision of a tee comprising-a cleanout branch formed integral with the tee.
Another object of this invention is the provision in a tee of a cleanout which gives immediat-e access to the drainage system in three directions, namely: up, down and horizontal.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a soil sanitary tee formed integral with a cleanout in order to same time, labor and material in the installation ot soil fittings.
Another object ot this invention is the provision of a combined tee and cleanout which will satisfy the requirements of municipal ordinances.
Another object of this invention is the provision of one litting which performs two distinct functions.
Another object of this invention is the provision in a tee of a cleanout disposed within a specified radius of the tee.
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, this invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved fitting showing a screw plug removed from the cleanout branch which it is adapted to close, and
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the fitting shown in Fig. 1, the cleanout branch being closed by the screw plug and fittings secured to the combination tee and cleanout.
Referring to the drawings for a more de" tailed description thereof, the numeral 5 indicates a tee having a vertical portion 6 and a horizontal portion 7, the upper and lower ends of the former and the outer end of the latter beingI adapted to be litted with other parts of a pipe system. Integral with the tee 5 is formed a cleanout branch 8 provided with interior threads 9 which are adapted to receive threads 10 on a screwV plug 11, which closes the cleanout branch. The cleanout branch 3 is Vpreferably placed in the hack of the tee opposite an aperture inthe horizontal portion 7 of the tee in order to providev immediate access upwardly, downwardly or horizontally, whereby a system, of which the tee forms a part, may be readily clea'ned without disassembling the same- As may be readily seen from an inspection of Fig` l, the diameters ot the vertical portion 6, the horizontal portion 7 and the clean-out branch 8 are all equal and that the clean-out branch 8 is so arranged that a straight rod of substantially a third of the interior diameter of any of these sections might be inserted through the opening in the clean-out branch 8 and be extended through the horizontal portion 7. This straight rod might also be inserted in the opening in the clean-out branch 8 and directed downwardly so as 'to project through the opening in the bottom of the vertical portion 6, in this manner giving tree access to the pipe 13 or to the pipe section which is secured to the lower end oi the sanitary Y tee.
Fig. 2 shows a pipe 12 secured to the upper end of the tee and a pipe bend 13 secured to the horizontal branch of the tee, the pipe bend 13 extending through a floor 14.
It will be appreciated that the tee of my invention saves time, labor and material, which would otherwise have to be expended. This will be appreciated when it is considered that otherwise, in order to provide a cleanout with. a tee, a soil Y or other fitting would have to be provided together with a cleanout, and in some cases a bend; to install these, material, such as caulking lead and okum, would have to be used, and'labor would be employed in performing the work and also in excavating. The excavation work would consume a plumbers time and delay the actual installation.
Furthermore, if my improved tee is not used, a whole run of sewer ditch may have to be lowered under certain conditions to get the proper grade for uniform and sanitary connections.
It will also be seen that the fitting which I have provided saves space and is economical in that it takes the place of two or more fittings. It also saves calculation and worry on the part of the Workmen, since it is always ready to perform .its function Without trouble of any kind.
This invention has been described, but modilications thereof may be devised Without departing from the spirit thereof, and it is to be understood that such modifications come Within the scope of this invention.
What is claimed is: c
l. A sanitary tee comprising a straight, vertical pipe section, and a pair of branches integral with said pipe section and projecting 'from opposite sides thereof in substantially the same plane, one of the branches being horizontal With respect to the pipe section and the other being 'upwardly inclined at approximately 45, the inclined branch being so arranged that the center of its upper end or entrance is approximately horizontally even with the center of the horizontal branch, and the central axis of vertical. pipe section having a pair o'f branches integral therewith, which project y from opposite sides thercotl in substantially the same plane, one of said branches being horizontal with respect to the pipe section, the other being upwardly inclined at approximately 45, said branches being so arranged that the central axis of the inclined branch Where it enters the vertical pipe section is belowl the central axis of the horizontal branch Where it enters the pipe section.
In testimony whereof I have Signed my name to this specification.
GEORGE W. WENTZEL.
