Description

Sept. 11, 1951 F. D. BUSKIRK Y QUARTER BEND PLUMBING FIT ING Filed Dec. 20, 1947 Patented Sept. IT, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT QEFICE Y QUARTER BEND PLUMBIILNGFI-TTING Fred 1). Buskirk, San Diego, Calif.
Application December 20, 1947, Serial No. 793,031
My invention relates to a Y quarter bend plunbing fitting and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a fitting of this class which greatly reduces the overall elevation of plumbing installations from the lower portions of plumbing fixtures to the ditch level in which the drainage soil pipe is positioned;
Second, to provide a fitting of this class which greatly reduces the multiplicity of fittings required in the installation of a, plumbing system;
Third, to provide a plumbing fitting of this class which provides for the disposition of clean outs above the. surface of the ground for the cleaning of the base soil pipe;
Fourth, to provide a. plumbing fitting of this class which greatly reducesthe labor in the digging of soil pipe ditches due to the fact that the elevation of the plumbing assembly is reduced permitting the ditches to be shallower with respect to the upper surface of the ground;
Fifth, to provide a fitting of this class which greatly facilitates the insertion of a plumbers snake into the base soil pipe of a plumbing system; and
Sixth, to provide a Y quarter bend fitting of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, efiicient in operation and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of .certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of portions and. a certain modification as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set'forthin the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon forming a part of this application in. which: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my Y quarter bend plumbing fitting; Fig. 2 is a view showing a modified form thereof; Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of another modified form of my Y quarter bend plumbing fitting and Fig. 4 is a side elevational View of the fitting as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing. v
The Y quarter bend fitting as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing is provided with a; 90 degree tubular portion I having Y portions 2 and 3 communieating therewith on a common plane with the plane of the curve of the 90 degree curved portion I. These Y portions 2 and 3 are provided with hub portions 2a and 3a. The 90 degree 9 Claims. (Cl. 285-4610) tubular portion designated la is provided with a male connection portion while the normally upper end thereof is provided with a hub lb. The fitting disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawing is similar to that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing but is produced with a single Y portion 3 omitting the Y portion 2 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing which Y portion 3 may be used as a clean out plug support or may be used as a connector for branch lines. As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, I have provided a modified form of the Y quarter bend fitting as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, in which the degree tubular portion a is provided with a pair of Ys 5 and 6 communicating therewith on a plane transverse to the plane of the 90 degree tubular portion 4. Thus, the fitting as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing employs Y sections disposed substantially 90. degrees from those shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The 90 degree tubular portion 4 is provided With a male connection portion 4a at its lower end and a hub to at its upper end. Either of the Y portions 5 or 6 may be employed to retain a clean out plug in either the hub 5a or the hub 6a as desired, dependingv upon the In this manner, the depth of the ditches may be greatly decreased which proportionately decreases the oost of labor for installing the plumbing. Clean out plugs inserted in either of the hubs 2a or 30. or in the hubs 5a or Go shown in Fig.. 3' of the drawing, permits these clean out plugs to stand above the surface of the ground which provides for the accessibility to the base soil pipe without inconvenience. It is obvious that the combination fitting normally employed in a conventional plumbing system entails the use of numerous other fittings which are not needed when using my Y quarter bend fitting. In addition, the installation of plumbing rising above the first floor is greatly facilitated due to the convenient Y structure of my Y quarter bend plumbing fitting. A plumbers snake inserted through a clean out in any of the Y portions of the Y quarter bend fittings as shown in Fig. l or 3 of the drawings, readily follows the long radius sweeping curvature of the 90 degree tubular members I or 4 and the resistance to travel therein is greatly reduced by said long radius so that clean out operations are greatly facilitated and in addition the fiow through the fitting is greatly improved.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of portions and certain modifications, I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement and the modification substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thu described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
