FANNER MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF CLEVELANU, QI-IO, CORPOEATON OF OHIO.
VALVE FR USE V'TTH BARRELS.
Application filed April l1, 1,921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL ll. Clisson', a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and i; State of Uhio, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Valves for ilse with Barrels, of `which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
`he present invention relates to a faucet 'lo or valve construction which is particularly adapted 'to be used in connection with barrels, more particularly metal barrels, the construction being; such that the faucet may be assembled with respect to the barrel se l as to be on the inside thereof during shipment, but readily removed.v and mounted tot4 outside thereof for the disextend on the pensing of the liquid material which is contained in the barrel.
The object of the invention is to provide a faucet of the character described Which may be made at low cost of manufacture and Will accommodate itself to the standardized littings with which such barrels are customarily provided.
Reference should be had to the accom-` panying drawings forming" a part of this specification in which Fig. l is an elevation with portions in section showing the faucet UU applied to a barrel and extending on the outside thereof; 2 is a sectional elevation showingr the position of the faucet upon the inside of the barrel; Fig. 3 is an elevation With portions in section showing` the faucet extending; from the outside of the barrel; Fig. l is an elevation with portions in section of a modiied construction.
Steel barrels at the present time commonly assume the shape and construction which is indicated in Fig. l, wherein there is provided a head l with an opening` therein such as indicated at 2 of sufficient size to permit the filling of the barrel conveniently and expeditiously. This opening` is closed by a metal plug or bung which is indicated at 3. These barrel heads are also provided with a second opening such as indicated at 4 which is adapted to receive the threaded end of a faucet by which the contents of the barrel may be dispensed. It is customary to close this openingby means of a plug during; shipment and When it is desired to dispense the contents of the barrel, to remove the plug and insert in the threaded opening a suitable faucet.
Serial No. 460,263.
The present invention is designed to pro- Vvide a faucet of such size that it will go through the relatively small threaded open ing,` il, the body of the faucet extending Within the barrel and suitably held, during shipment.) and when the barrel has reached its dest .tion and it is desired to dispense the contents, the faucet may be removed from the threaded opening., reverseth and again threaded into the opening', the body of the faucet extending` outwardly into convenient position to accommodate receptacles to which the contents of the barrel are to` be delivered'.
ln the present instance the bodyof the valve is indicated at J"rdjacent one end the body of the valve is provided with an extension 6 of reduced diameter and the saine is threaded upon its outer surface as indicated at i'. Upon this reduced portion 6 there is mount-ed an internally threaded bushingl 8 `Which is also provided With threads upon its outer surface by which it may be mounted in the threaded opening;1 4i of the barrel'. This bushing has a head 8 which adapted to enpgape against the outer surface of the barrel when the bushing); is in itsl final position. There .is also provided a nut 9. which is threaded upon the reduced portion 6 of the faucet body.y the nut 9 acting` as a lock nut to prevent relative rotation of the bushing with respect to the body of the faucet.
.The valve body is provided with a central passapfeiva,7 5n and' at the end thereof which is opposite to the reduced portion 6.
the valve body is provided With a recess of enlarged diameter which is partially threaded as indicated at 5b. The `enlarp'edportion at the end of the faucet body provides a shoulder 5 against which a plug l is adapted to engage. The plug 10 may conveniently be provided With a Washer 10a as is usual in valve construction. A portion of the plue; is threaded as indicated at 10b and cooperates with a threaded portion b as before described. The plug is also provided with an extension C by which extension the plug l() may be rotated so as to seat or unseat the plug. `While any convenient means may be employed for rotating; the plug; 10 it is preferred to construct the proiection 10 with one or more Hat sides which may conveniently be engaged by a Wrench and such a Wrench is shown as comprising a flat member 11 provided with a hole 12a which is complimentary to the shape ot the extension 10c so that when mounted thereon the member 11 may be utilized to move the plug 10.
The body 5 is provided with an opening 5d which is an outlet opening, this outlet opening lying beyond the valve seat and when the plug 10 is moved from the valve seat the interior passageway 5a is in communication with the opening 5d.
During shipment ot the barrel the operating handle 11 maj.v be placed wit-hin the body 5 as forming a convenient storage place tor the saine. In order to prevent the handle 11 from dropping out a plug 12 is provided which is threaded into the end ot the opening in the taucet body 5.
In Fig. l an alternative construction is shown wherein a single cap member is made to serve not only as a closure for the end oit the opening in the valve body 5, but also to function as a locking nut in place of the nut 9. The cap member referred to is shown in 1 and indicated at 13 and is thread ed so that it may be mounted upon the threads 7 at the end of the valve body 5. This cap member when turned to its innermost position engages with the head 8 of the bushing 8 serving as a locking member and also as a closure member for the open end of the valve body.
In assembling the valve body with respect to a barrel the valve body and bushing S are iirst assembled, the locking nut 9 or locking cap 13 as the case may be, properly mounted, and then the valve body is inserted through the opening d of the barrel, the bushing 8 and the parts assembled therewith being turned until the head 8a of the bushing engages iirmly with the head ot the barrel.
In removing 4the 'faucet so as to dispense the contents of the barrel, the bushing 8 with the parts attached thereto is removed, the lock nut 9 or the cap 13 removed, and where the plug 12 is used, ittoo is removed. The valve body is then disassociated from the bushing 8 and the bushing again threaded up on the extensions 6, but in its reversed position so that the valve body proper may be said to extend outwardly from the head of the bushing and occupying the position which is indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. In this position the plug 10 may be operated as required to dispense the contents of the barrel.
The whole faucet structure and the paris assocated therewith form a selcontained unit which is adaptable to be mounted within-the barrel for shipment and to be mounted on the exterior ot the barrel for dispensing purposes.
I-Iaving described my invention, I claim- 1. A barrel having an opening therein, a bushing removably mounted in said opening, said bushing being provided with intei-nal screw threads, a hollow valve body, a valve cooperating with said hollow valve body, said valve body having a threaded end portion adapted to be screwed into the bushing, said threaded portion ot the body being ot a length to extend through the bushing and project beyond the end thereof when fully screwed therein and said valve body being insertible into the bushing from either end ot the bushing, and alock nut aradapted to be screwed on the threaded end of the valve body which projects beyond the end of the bushing, said lock nut being engageable with the end of the bushing.
2. A barrel having an opening therein, a bushing removably mounted in said opening, said bushing being provided with a centrai threaded opening, a hollow valve body, a valve (ooj'icra'ing with said hollow valve body, said valve body having an end por- '.'icn threaded to cooperate with the mpi-ning in the bushing, said threaded portan; o l" the body being oi' a length to project through and beyond the end of the bushing when Jfully screwed therein and said valve body being insertible in the bushing from either end ot the bushing, and a cap member for closing the open end ot the valve body, said cap member being adapted to be threaded on the en'd of the valve body which projects beyond the end ot the bushing and engageable with the end ot the bushing whereby it serves as a lock nut.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
SAMUEL H. GIBSON.
