TOBACCO-PIPE STEM.
Application filed December 17, 1824. Serial No. 756,598.
' a citizen of the United States,- residing at Sparks, in the county of Cherry and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipe Stems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tobacco pipe stem, and particularly to a construction embodying a cooling chamber for the smoke and means to prevent the entrance of material from the pipe bowl into said chamber or the admittance thereto of liquid from the mouthpiece.
In pipes of this character difficulty .has been experienced in providing a simple construction adapted to be readily separated for cleaning purposes and which would effectually prevent the entrance to the cooling chamber of tobacco slugs or other material from the bowl of the pipe and also to check the flow of saliva from the mouthpiece into this chamber.
Furthermore in the use of different characters of tobacco a modification of the draft of the pipe is often desirable,.as with a free burning dry tobacco less draft is required than if. the tobacco is of a moist or slow burning character. To obviate the objection stated I have provided a construction in which the cooling chamber and screen attached to the pipe neck or stem are separately or jointly detachable and this chamber provided at its opposite end with a mouthpiece having an inwardly closing check valve the movement of which is regulated to determine the draftof the pipe.
The. invention has for an object to providea novel and improved construction of pipe stem comprising a screen member attachable "to the pipe bowl and adapted to receive a cooling chamber which is provided at its opposite end with an -inwardly closing check valve.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of the screening cap which is threaded upon the bowl and. i
has threaded thereon the cooling chamber which comprises an elongated member provided at its opposite end with a mouthpleoe.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel type of pipe stem comprising a cooling chamber having a valve casing in which a check valve is dls osed and an adjustable tip mounted to hmit the opening travel of said valve whereby the draft of the p1pe may be regulated. Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features. thereof defined by the appended claims.

The pipe bowl 10 may be formed of any desired material or configuration and the neck or. stem 11 extending therefrom is exterio-rly threaded at its end 12. This neck .18 provided with a conical or tapering apery ture 13 communicatin with the bowl and aracters designate corwhich owing to its con guration permits the introduction of a match stem or other device for the purpose of removing any crust or adhering matter which may pass from.

Mounted upon the neck 11 is a screenin cap 14: preferably formed of metal an pressed into a threaded portion 15 which extends from therim 16 to the head 17 thereof. This head is provided at its upper portion or sector with any desired number of apertures 18 to permit the draft for the pipe, whlle the lower portion ofthe head bemg closed effectually prevents theassage of any particles of tobacco or ash t rough such apertures. The 'threaded'portion 15 is engaged. with the neck of the pipe and the head 19 of the cooling chamber 20 is threaded upon this portion 15 and abuts against the rim 16 as shownin Figure 1. The cooling chamber may be of any desired config uration and is preferably elongated and of enlarged diameter to provide a maximum surface areafor cooling the smoke passing therethrough. I
The free end of the cooling chamber is provided with an interiorly threaded socket 21 ada ted to receive a valve casing 22 which is formed with a port 23 adapted to cooperate with a check valve 24, for instance of the ball construction shown in Flgure 2. This. check valve normally closes the valve port to prevent the entrance'of molsture or saliva into the cooling chamber, but 1n the use of the pipe the draft therethrough causes access to t the ball to be rolled away from said ort. For the purpose of regulatin the raft relative to the character or con ition of the tobacco used a tip or mouthpiece 25 is provided and its shank 26 exteriorly threaded into an aperture of the valve casing 22. The passage 27 through this tip member communicates with a groove 28 at the inner end thereof so that when the check valve is in open position the passage through the tip will not be closed.
When it is desired to provide for a minimum draft through the pipe such as in the 'use of a dry tobacco, this tip may be adjusted. inward to the position shown in Figure 1 where the ball valve has only a limited movement permittingpassage of air through a portion of the port 23 while if a greater draft is required, for instance with moist tobacco, the ball is permitted to completely leave this port, opening the same to its full ca acity as shown in Figure 2.
n the application of the invention it will be seen that the cooling chamber may be removed independently of the screening cap if desired for cleaning purposes while these parts may be jointly removed by grasping the flange upon said cap in order to emit e neck of the pipe. t the mouthpiece end of the stem the t' is adapted for removal so that access can be readily secured tov the valve and its casing for cleansing the same and this tip inserted to the desired extent to effect the regulation of the draft found most desirable with the character or condition of the tobacco used.
This construction provides meansb which the passage of any material from t e pipe bow is prevented by the screening cap and the smoke passing through the 0 en ortion of such cap is cooled within t e c amber while the chamber is effectually closed against the admittance of moisture or saliva by the seating of the valve at the mouth piece. This improved stem eliminates the usual long narrow draft opening therethrou h which becomes often clog ed, and provi es for a free and clean dra t under continued use of the pipe which consequently requires less fre uent cleaning.
While the speci 0 details of construction have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as chan es and alterations may be made without eparting from the spirit thereof as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A pipe stem comprising a screen member attachable to a pipe bowl, a cooling chamber mounted thereon a mouthpiece for said chamber provided wlth a valve seat, a freely movable ball valve disposed thereon, and adjustable means for regulating the opening movement of said valve.
2. A pipe stem comprising a screening cap threaded upon the neck of a pipe bowl, an elongated cooling chamber se arately threaded upon the exterior of sai cap, a mouthpiece carried by the free end of said cooling chamber and provided with a valve seat, a free ball valve cooperating with said seat, and means mounted in said valve casing and adjustable relative to the seat to limit the opening travel of said valve.
3. In a pipe stem, a coolin chamber mounted upon a pipe bowl an provided, with a threaded socket at its free end, a valve casing mounted in said socket and rovided with a port a ball valve adapte to close said port, and an apertured tip mounted in said casing and adjustable to limit the opening movement-of said valve.
