The relatively fixed crusher member 15, having a lining 21, is surmounted by a frame 16 which supports, through an internally threaded ring 33, so as to provide for vertical adjustment, a casing or housing 28 in which may be disposed a motor 43. tubular shaft 40 of the rotor 44 is mounted in a sleeve bearing 41, in the tubular extension 17 of the housing 28, and in a composite radial and thrust bearing 42 at the upper end of the housing. At the lower end of the extension 17 there is formed a spherical enlargement 18 upon which is suspended, so as to be capable of gyratory movement, the relatively movable member 20 of the crusher, which carries the tapered mantle 25 to form, with Ithe liningv21, a space with converging walls between which the crushing of the material is carried on progressively in the operation of the crusher. The spherical enlargement 18 is received in the construction shown in a spherical seat formed in two rings 183l and 18b which are seated in the sleeve-like extension. of theJ crusher member 20 and are held in place by a sleeve nut 18C. Within the mantle 25 are supported the raeeways 48 with which coact, under the influence of centrifugal action, the balls or lintermediate members 46, the latter being received in recesses 47 of the balanced impeller 45.
The parts thus far referred to and de@ Ascribed herein merely as a structure adapted for the application of the present invention, are constructed and arranged substantially as described in said ap lication and for convenience are identifie as far as possible, by the same reference numerals as those employed in said application, with particular reference to the embodiment of the invention as shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings of said application.
In 4the several embodiments of the invention described in said'application, "the impeller rotates upon an axis which is fixed with respect to the stationary member of the crusher and the movable member of the crusher rates about such xed axis, with the resu t, as already explained, that the radial distance of the balls or intermediate members 46 from the axis of the impeller, may varyand, as a consequence, that the linear velocity of such balls or intermediate .members may vary during each revolution of the balls about the axis of the impeller. In accordance with the present invention, however, provision is made whereby the radial distance of the balls from the axisof the impeller shall be constant and the linear velocity of the balls shall also be constant if, as is presumed, the speed of rotation of the s impeller is constant. To this end, the impeller is so Vsupported as to be` concentric at 'all timeswith the movable member 20 of the crusher and thereforeA to gyrate with the l and a freely mova crusher about the center of the spherical- 'support 18 of the movable crusher member head of the movable crusher member 20,
and in a sleeve bearing 45d placed in the plate 22 which, supports the mantle 25 and is held to the head of the member 20 by bolts 24, as described in said application.
It will be understood that the mounting of the shaft of the impeller in bearings which are carried by the vmovable member of the crusher and in concentricity therewith, constitutes a convenient means by which the radial distance of the 'balls or intermediate members from the axis of the impeller is constant under all conditions of operation and that, therefore, the linear velocity of the balls or intermediate members will be constant, if the speed of rotation of the impeller is constant, and the disadvantages due to variation in linear velocity will be overcome. It will be obvious that various changes in details of construction will be made to suit different conditions of use, as in the several embodiments of the main invention shown in said application, and that the present inventionv, except as indicated in the claims, is not limited to any particular construction.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a crusher, the combination of a rela tively xed crusher member, a relatively movable crusher member, a balanced impeller, a freely movable intermediate body interposed between the impeller and the relatively movable crusher member and subject to the action of centrifugal force, and means to maintain the radial distance of such in, termediate body-from the axis of the impeller constant throughout the revolution of the intermediate body.
'2. In acrusher, the combination of arelatively lixed crusher member, a relatively movable crusher member, a balanced impeller, a freely movable intermediate body interposed between the impeller and the relatively movable crusher member and subject to the action of centrifugal force, and means to maintain the impel er in concentricity with the relatively movable crusher member.
