Description

E. PERRY RAILROAD TIE Fil'ed DBG. 23. 1924 gvwenkn Patented ct. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATS .PATENT FFE.
ELLERY PERRY, F CLEAN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RO'Y E. VANCE, 0F OLEAN, NEW YORK.
RAILROAD TIE.
- Application filed December 23, 1924, Serial No. 757,723.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELLERY PERRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad Ties, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is the provision of a railroad tie which will keep the rails equidistantly spaced and which will provide a cushion like riding means.
Another object of my invention is to provide a locking means for a railroad tie which is effective, durable and positive.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a single or double tie construction for railroads which is inexpensive and lasting.
Additional objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the claim and the drawings illustrating the invention wherein- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my railroad tiethe rails shown in transverse section.
Fig. 2 is a transverse view partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a modified view of the tie showing a single instead of double construction.
Fig. l is a plan view of the assembled members, and
Fig. 5 is a view of the disassembled units of the locking mechanism.
Numeral 6 refers to the usual rails of standard or other gage, used for railroads, street car tracks, etc.
To hold the rails 6 parallel, I provide a metal tie 7 shown of a two unit section-8 in Figs. 2 and 4f or in a single unit section 9 in Fig. 3.
This tie 7 is preferably of metal which may slightly expand if necessary though its coefficient of expansion does not have to be the same as that of the steel rails; furthermore by making the ties of metal all can be of uniform size and thickness. The ties 7 are made U shape in cross section and inverted as shown at 9 to provide a resilient or an easy riding seat, also for the accommodation of a brace or standard 10. This brace 10 has a groove 11 to hold a screw threaded rod 12 having a head 13 and nut 111. Threaded on the worm 12 is a riding nut le, having an ear or clamp l5, co-4 operating with another nut 16 having ear 17. These ears and 17 rest against flanges 18 of the rail 6. TvVhen nuts 14 and 16 are forced together by means 'of a key or wrench 19, acting on head 13 of the worm 12, the rails are held rmly in place and in parallelism by means of alined slots 20. i
I do not wish to limit myself to the double supporting members shown in Fig. 2 or the single unit support shown in Fig. 3. The principle of my invention is the same in both cases.
Furthermore, it must be understood that only a preferred embodiment of my invention is herein shown and described and any departure from the same, such as in shape, size or arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or from the spirit and scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A. railroad tie having slots, an inverted U shape brace in each end of said tie under each slot, each brace having a groove, a screw threaded member resting in said groove, means on-the member for engaging a rail and means to hold a rail at each end of the tie in parallel alinement.
ELLERY PERRY.
