Now the object of the present invention is to eliminate manually operated type retaining devices and construct type retaining means which lock and release the types automatically and so overcome any possibility of types falling out ofthe stick. v

The invention consists in the use of balls one at each end of the fo-rk thevsaid balls rolling in inclined races, one at each end of tlhe stick and the inclines being oppositely opposed. According to the invention the'composing stick may be formed in any well known manner. On the drawings 10 represents the composing end of the stick while 10afrepresents the end for setting up the type of the-forme. l

The composing stick is shown as being of i tubular form there being provided a central slot 11 extending throughout the length of the tube. The composing end 10 is angled off as at `12 so 'that prongs 13 `are formed which prongs engage the channels 14 of the types 15 and sc lift'tliem out of thefount and retain them in the central slot or channel 11. The other end of the stick 10a is also fashioned with prongs 16 for setting up the type Von the forme. v

`It is to be understood that the invention may be applied to existing composing sticks :usedgwith grooved type of the character described Which may differ in appearance -and construction -from the example illustrated in the drawings.
