Description

Oct. 13, 1925- c JACKSON I TAMPING 0R BALLASTING MACHINE Filed July 25. 1924 Patented Oct. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATES GOBWIIJL JACKSON, CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS.
- TAIPING OB BALLASTING MACHINE.
Application filed July 25,1924. Serial No. 728,099.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ConwILL JAoKsoN, a citizen of the United States, resldlng at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Ill1n01s,
B have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tamping or Ba11ast1ng Machines, of which the fol owing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in 0 tamping or ballasting machmes.
The main object of this invention 1s to provide an improved tamping or ballast ng machine which is highly eflicient and at the same time easily manipulated Objects pertaining to details and economies of m invention will definitely appear from the etailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means descrlbed n the following specification. "The mvention is clearly defined and ointed out in the claims.
A structure whic is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing formmg a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a fragmentary side elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention, the same being shown in operative relation to a railway trac Fig. I is a detail elevation showing the tamper bladesof Fig. I in another actuated position.
Fi'g. II is a detail view partially 1n vertical section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Figs. I and III.
Fig. III is a horizontal section on a line corres ending to line 33 of Figs. I, II and I Fig. IV is a fragmentary side view of a modified form of my invention, the modification being in the form of the tamper blades.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all of the views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a supporting frame, in practice a truck adapted to travel upon a railway track. The head member2 is carried by an arm 3 su ported to be raised and lowered by means 0? the cable 4, the means for operating the cable not being illustrated.
Upon the head member I mount vertical ways 5 carrylng an impact means as illustrated, consisting of a cylinder 6 with piston 7 therein having an impact head 8. The control valves and connections for the cylinder are not illustrated. The cylinder is ad'ustably supported in the ways by means of the screw 8.
Supported in ways below the impact means 1s a tamper crosshead 9 carrying the tamper arm 10 which is pivoted to the crosshead at 11 so that it han s from the crosshead On the lower end 0 this arm I mount a pair of tamper blades 12, the blades being carried by the pivot 13 and having laterally projectingarms 14 which are adapted to engage a pair of adjacent ties, as illustrated in Fig. 1*, thereby spreadin the blades, the crosshead at the same time icing subject to the blows of the impact means.
Buffer springs 15 are provided for the crosshead, these springs being carried by the rods 16 disposed through the crosshead, the rods' being adjustable with the cylinder so that the same relative relation is maintained for the impact means and the crosshead as the parts are fed downwardly by means of the screw 8.
In the modification shown in Fig. IV the tamper blades 17 are pivoted directly to the crosshead, these blades being arranged in coactingflpairs back to back, the lower ends of the ades being diverged as shown so that they tend to separate when they come in contact with the ballasting materlal.
With the arts thus arranged the tamper blades are ed downwardly into the material to be compacted, at the same time being subjected to a series of impacts with the result that the material is effectively tamped under and around the ties.
- I have not attempted to illustrate certain other embodiments or modifications which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
