L. BROWN SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GAS COCKS Filed Feb. 28, 1925 wn'nsss: ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 6, 1925.
I LEROY BROWN, OZF'BALTIMORE,MARYL-ALND, ass enon TonARnYM; RonMAn, or
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND,
I sarn'rvnrrncmvrnnr r03 GAS cocxsq 'Aprilicationfiled February 28, 1925. Serial No. 12,439.
To all wh-om z'tma z concern: I
Be it known that I, LEROY BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore and State'of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in SafetyAttachments for Gas Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety attachments for stop cooks for gas ranges, stoves and the like and has for its primary object the provision ofa simple, durable, and inexpensiveattachment that can be expeditiously applied to any stop cock of the character as above set forth'by unskilled persons and the function of the attachment being such that when the cock is closed it will prevent accidental opening thereof, and manipulation of the attachment being necessary to unlatch the same before gas can be admitted to the burners of gas ranges, stoves and the like, and the latching operation being automatic upon operation of said cock to shut OK the gas supply.
This invention also consists in certain other. features oficonstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or correseponding parts throughout the several views. and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gas cook of the usual construction and showing the latch which forms the subject matter of the present invention applied thereto and arranged in active position.
Figure 2 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view showing the latch ar ranged in inactive position.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view showing the clampingmeans of the latch.
Figure 5 is a similar view showing the manipulating and stop means.
Referring to the drawings in detail the letter A indicates a stop cock for gas ranges, stoves and the like, B the neck of the valve means therefore and the valve operating handle. 7
The attachment which forms the subject r matter of the present invention is adapted to be secured to the neck B midway the ends thereof "through the medium of aresilient band 1 having aperturedears 2 and3 formed thereon for receiving the bolt and nut connection 4 which is adapted. to clamp the band to the neck in the manner as shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive. Laterally extending in parallelism from adj acent'one end of the band 1 is a pair, of horizontally arranged projections 5 and 6 eachof which being provided with a square opening 7 to slidably receive the latchinglever 8 which is square in cross section for operative association with the. square-openings as will-be readily apparent.
Rising at an inclination from the upper end'of the locking lever 8 there is an arm 9 provided with an aperture 10 arranged adjacent the juncture of said arm with the locking lever and received within the aperture 10;.is one end of a coil spring 11 while the opposite end ofsaid coil spring is secured in alike aperture .12 formed in the horizontally arranged projection 6, the spring being adapted to put the locking lever under tension and tend to hold the same in operative association with the stop cock as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. A right angle extension 13 is formed on the lower end of the latching lever 8 .to prevent the removal thereof from the opening 7 and to provide a substantial bearmg surface as will be readily apparent. A
finger engaging piece 14 is formed on the upper end of the arm 9 and is arranged at right angles thereto whereby the locking lever can be manipulated upon movement of the handle C of the valve when the valve is being moved to open position.
Rising from the ends of the band 1 are a pair of arcuate shaped fingers 15 and 16 which are adapted to engage the inner end of the handle 0 as shown'in Figure 2 of the drawings, therefore it will be seen that the latch is provided with a double securing means, namely the bolt and nut connection 4 which holds the band associated with the neck C as above set forth, and the fingers 15 and 16.
From the foregoing description together with the accompanying drawings it will be readily apparent that the operation of the invention is extremely simple and maybe briefly described as follows: When the valve of the stop cock is arranged to close the latter as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, the latching lever 8 is disposed in its lowermost position and has its lower bearing surface arranged in a recess D formed in the casing of the stop cock and said lever bearing against one end of the recess to prevent movement of the handle. Upon pressure on the finger engaging piece 14 the locking lever 8 will be forced upwardly against the tension of the spring 11 until the lateral projection 13 engages the projection 6 and this movement of the locking lever will enable the valve to be moved to open position or as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. Upon returning the valve to closed position the locking lever being under tension through the medium of the spring 11 will automatically drop within the recess and prevent opening of the valve until the finger engaging piece 14 is again pressed. Therefore it will be readily apparent that the attachment will prevent accidental opening of stop cooks for gas stoves, ranges and the like by engagement of clothing therewith or by a child or pet.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A safety attachment for a gas cook comprising a resilient band, means for seouring said band to the neck of the valve means of the gas cook for movement with said valve means, a spring controlled latch lever secured to said band for vertical slidable movement and associated with said cock to prevent accidental opening of the valve means, manipulating means for said lever and a pair of arcuate shaped fingers ar ranged in contacting engagement with the operating handle of the valve means and together with said band securing means retain said attachment to the valve means and operating handle respectively.
2. A safety attachment for gas cocks comprising a clamping member for securing the same to the valve means of a gas cook, a pair of laterally extending parallel arranged projections formed 011 the clamping member and being provided with registering openings, a latch lever mounted for slidable movement in the openings, a coil spring secured to said lever and one of said projections respectively and putting the lever under tension for automatically dropping the same to operative position, a right angle extension formed on the lower end of the lever for engagement with the gas cook to prevent the operation thereof and to also prevent removal of the lever from the projection, and finger manipulating means for the lever.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
LEROY BROWN.
