The top 23 of the cabinet is provided with an opening 23 of substantially rectangular or similar outline, extending from the inner edge 28 of the opening to the lateral edge 29 of one side of the top 23. It will be noted that the hinges 24 25, of the base 22 of the sewing machine head 19, are located adjacent the inner edge 28 of the opening 23?.
The closure members 30, 31 are pivotally connected to one another, see Figs, 2, 3 and 4, as by means of the spaced hinges 32, 33. The outer closure member 31 is suitably pivoted to the bar 34, as by means of the spaced hinges 35, 36. The bar 34 is disposed below the top 23. The pivot lugs 37, 38, preferably dis-posed oppositely and respectively at the lateral sides 39, 40 of the opening 23 in the top 23, serve when moved to their outer positions to support the closure member when in its closed position and when swung inwardly, are removed beyond the contour of the opening 23 in the top 23. The spring bolt lock 41 coacts with a suitable keeper or other opening 42 at the inner edge of the inner closure member 30 for locking the closure member 30 and therewith the closure member 31 when in closed position.
The outer edge 43 of the outer closure member 31 is preferably beveled or otherwise finished in correspondence to the bevel or other finish of the lateral edge 29 of the top proper 23.
Below the outer edge 43 of the outer closure member 31, I arrange the opening 44, see Figs. 3 and 4, preferably provided with the closure flap 45, hinged by the spaced hinges 46 to the under face of the bar 34, to afford swiriging upwardly of the closure flap 45 as is indicated at 45 in Fig. 3, and to permit one hand of the user to be placed under the closure members 30, 31 to push the closure members 30, 31 upwardly when it is desired to raise the sew ing machine head 19 to its operative position, as shown in Fig. 4. By such movement, the sewing machine head is swung upwardly with the other hand of the user to raise the outer edge 46 of the base 22 of the Y sewing machine head 19 above the plane of the top proper 23, whereupon the inner closure member 30 having been swung upwardly' throughthe opening 23 and thence downwardly under the outer closure member 31, the outer closure member 31 is then of the base 22 encounters the eyes 33 of the hinges 33, and correspondingly the eyes, of
the hinge 32, and the base 22 is thereby supported at its lateral edge 46.
To effect such coaction between the base 22 and the movable closure members 30', 31, I preferably form the hinges 24, 25, pivotally supporting the inward edge of the base 22, each of double hinge construction, namely comprising three plates serially hinged to one another; as is illustrated in Fi 7 the hinge 24 comprises the end hinge plate 24, the intermediate hinge plate 24 and the opposite end hinge plate 24.
The lock lock bolt 41. may be of any suitable construction, but I prefer the same to include a releasing member 50, see Fig. 6, extending on the under side of the top 23 toward and adjacent one edge of the top 23, to facilitate access. The spring of the bolt is indicated at 51.
I prefer to enclose the space 52 for concealing the sewing machine head 19 when in its lowered. position, within the casing 53 of formed sheet metal, shaped slopingly down- Wardly from the point to the rear, see Fig. 1, and turned upwardly at its ends 54, 55, see Figs. 3 and 5, and having the eye-extensions 56 for receiving fastening bolts 57, see Fig. 2.
The iron-receiving drawer 58 may conveniently be located at the righthand end of the cabinet.
The head or front board 59 of the ironreceiving drawer 60 extends the full height of the opening of the cabinet, whereas the lateral sides 61, 62, see Fig. 1, or at least the outer lateral side 61 of the drawer proper 60, are of height materially less than the height of the front board 59 to thereby provide a free and clear space 63 within the cabinet opening above the top of the lateral sides 61, 62, of the drawer 60 and under the top board 64 of the opening in the cabinet. The sides 61, 62, the frontal board 59 and rear board of the drawer 60 may be of wood, preferably lined with sheet metal, 65, see Figs. 2 and 5.
The back board 84 of the enclosure for the concealed sewing machine head 19 is preferably of wood to conform to the wood of the cabinet.
The strip of board 34 attains rigidity of the portion of the top 23 opposite the opening 23, and serves also as a support for the outer closure member 31 when in closed position and also when the sewing machine head 19 is supported in its raised position. The outer closure member 31, it will be noted serves as a support for the cloth or other material sewed when the sewing machine 1s in use.
lVhereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a top provided with an opening to permit the raising of the headof the sewing machine therethrough, closure means for said opening comprising a plurality of closure members arranged in substantially facial alignment when the closure means is in its closed position and pivotal means connecting said closure members to one another and serving to support the sewing machine head when the closure means is in its open position.
2. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a top provided with an opening to permit the raising of the head of the sewing machine therethrough, closure means for said opening comprising a pair of closure members arranged in substantially facial alignment when the closure meansvis in its closed position andhinge means connecting said closure members to one another and serving to support the sewing machine head when the closure means is in its open position.
3. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a top provided with an opening to permit the raising of the head of the sewing machine therethrough, closure means for said opening comprising a plurality of closure members arranged in substantially facial alignment when the closure means is in its closed position, means forpivoting said closure members to said top of the cabinets and pivotal means connecting said closure members to one another and serving to support the sewing machine head when.

4. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a top provided with an opening to permit the raising of the head of the sewing machine, closure means for said opening comprising a pair of closure members arranged in substantially facial align-' ment when the closure means is in its closed position, means for pivoting said closure members to said top of the cabinets and hinge means connecting said closure members to one another and serving to support the sewing machine head when the closure means is in its open position.
5. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a top provided with an opening to permit the raising of the head of the sewing machine therethrough, closure means for said opening comp-rising a plurality of closure members, means for holding said plurality of closure members in substantially facial alignment with one another when said closure means is in its closed position, pivotal means connecting said plurality of closure members to one another, certain of said plurality of closure members being concealed within said opening when the sewing machine head has been raised through said opening and the other of said plurality of closure members serving to hold the sew ing machine head in its raisedposition.

In a sewing machine cabine-t,'the combination of atop provided with an opening to permit the raising of the head of the sewing machine therethrough, closure means for said opening comprising a plurality of closure members, means for holding said plurality of closure members in substantially facial alignment with the top proper of the cabinet, pivotal means connecting said plurality of closure members to one another, certain of said plurality of closure members being concealed within said opening when the sewing machine head has been raised through said opening and the other of said plurality of closure members serving to hold the sewing machine head in its raised position.
7. In a sewing machine cabinet, the combination of a top provided with an opening to permit the raising of the head of the sewing machine therethrough, closure means for said opening comprising a plurality of closure members, means for holding said plurality of closure members in substantially facial alignment with one another when said closure means is in its closed position, pivotal means connecting said plurality of closure members to one another and to the top proper of the cabinet, certain of said plurality of closure members being concealed within said opening when the sewing machine head has been raised through said opening and the other of said plurality of closure members serving to hold the sewing machine head in its raised position.
8.
