JOSEPH SILBERT, O'F WINNIPEQMANITOBA, CANADA.
HALTR.
Application led January vTo all whom ft-moy concern.' i' n v ABe it known that I, JOSEPH. SILBERT, subject. of the King of England, residing at llVinnipeg, in the Province-of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements. in'lialters and has for one of its Objectsy to provide a device of this character of increasedstrength and durability Withoutmaterial increase in expense of manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with the several members constructed initially of strips of flexible material, preferably raw hide, of double or more widths and folded upon themselves longitudinally with the terminal portions of the longitudinally folded membersV folded over to form ring receiving loops. With these and other objects in; view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically ,pointedout inY the claims, and'in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.y
. Fig. 1 is a perspectivev view ofthe improved halter, complete. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail o f the coupling member between thefthroat latch and Fig is a'section 1on the line 3-k-30f Fig. 2,. y V
`YFig. 4 is an enlarged detail of one ofthe laced terminals of the members.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 represents a portionof the terminal on the halter members, distended.
Fig. 7 represents one of the lacing's: de-v tached and extended.
The various members of the improved halter are preferably constructed of raw hide, with each member initially of double width and folded over longitudinally to form two thicknesses of the material and the end portions of the longitudinally folded members folded over to form ring receiving loops and the looped ends secured to the 1ongitudinally folded portions by lacings, also preferably of raw hide.
By this means, the strength and durability of the p-arts is materially increased With- 15, 1925. serial No. 2,679. l` i I out material increase of expense of manu faotureor cost ofv material.'
, A'complete halter is shown in Figqil, and tch 11',l
includes the nose latch 10, the jaw` the head strapf12,jthe cheek straps' '13, the
throat latclil4, and the couplingfstrap 15,
between `the-'jaw strap 11, and throat strap 14'.v Y'
members l10,f1111l2, 713, and 14are formed substantially alike and the description of one will'suflicefor all.
Eaoh'oftheabove members is formed of a strapy of lexiblematerial, preferably raw hide, .initially of double the Widthv ofthe completed member,"and folded upon'itselflongitudinally with the end portions folded overA upon the longitudinally foldedportion u to form loops 21 kto receive the rings 16V and 17, 'and the folded overpporti'o'ns 'secured by lacing's as, shoWn.
The arrangement of the7 lacings whereby the loops of the members 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, are secured, are alike, while the arrangementof the' lacing whereby the coupling member 15 is secured, is somewhat different,
as'hereafter explained. v i f l r1`he manner of lapplying lthe lacin'gs v,to prevent loosening and without fastenings other i thanH the, lacings themselves lis novell with applicant and arranged as shown.
A portion of one of the halter members, for instance the member 10, is'shown distended in Fig. 6 and a portion of one of the laoings at 22 in Fig. 7 Each of the lacings is slightly widened at one end and the widened portion pro-vided with a cleft 23.
The body members 10 vto 14 are provided respectively at opposite sides of the fold which forms the loop 21, and indicated by a dotted line in Fig. 6, with live spaced clefts 24 at the outer side of the fold and eight like clefts 24 at the inner side of the fold.
The cleft end of the lacing is first wrapped' around the foldedi over Ifportion next to the l'oop'andsthen passed through the cleft 23 and thencethrough the adjacent cleft 24@A and thence looped around the portion of the lacing lat the opposite side of the body member andthence passed in the opposite direction through the second series of registering clefts, and around the superposed portions and thence through the same cleft in the opposite' direction and thence looped around the portion of the lacing which has last been looped around the superposed portions and thence laced back and forth through the remaining registering clefts. By this means the plurality of weavings and interloopings produces so many turns that the friction is amply sufficient to prevent displacement between the parts, and requires no other fastenings.
The coupling member 15 is constructed of inner and'outer portions, an inner portion initially of double Width and double length and' folded together' longitudinally and likewiseV folded together intermediate the ends to engage at'yone fold around the member 14 and at the other fold around the ring 18, the terminals of the inner coupling portion being overlapped and scarfed as indicated at 25 in Fig. 3. l
The outer coupling portion is also of double width and double length and folded together longitudinally and thence folded around the inner coupling member with the terminalsr overlapping and scarfed as indicated at 26. p
i The six thicknesses of material thus produced are pierced by spaced clefts to receive a lacing 27 woven back and forth through the interposed portions as' shown in Figs. 2 and yThe halter thus constructed is very strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture and can be adapted without material structlural change `to halters of various sizes and to halters for various species of animals.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle' of the invention' or sacrilicing any of its advantages. l
Having thus described the invention. what is claimed is: v
l. A halter member formed of a section of flexible material initially of double width and folded upon itself longitudinally'with the end portions folded upon the same to form loops to receive ring devices, and lacings uniting the folded over terminals to the longitudinally folded member.
2. A halter comprising a member formed of a section of flexible material initially of double width and folded upon itself longitudinally with the end portions folded upon the same to form loops to receive ring devices, lacings uniting the folded over terminals to the longitudinally folded member, andan intermediate coupling member formed of'. a plurality of members of flexible' material initially of double width and folded respectively4 upon themselves longitudinally and the longitudinally folded members, interfolded and formed with loops at the ends to engage theV first mentioned folded member by one looped terminal and a ring device at the other looped'terminal.
3. A halter member formed of a section of flexible material initially of double width and folded upon itself longitudinally lwith the end portions folded upon the same. to form loops to Y.receive ring devices, said folded over end portions and the adjacent portions of the longitudinally folded body being provifded respectively with a plurality of clefts which register when the parts are su'perposed', and` a lacing having a cleft at one end and looped through the lacing cleft and baci: and forth through the spaced registering clefts.
ln'testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
' J SILBERT.
