UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH WUNDER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, AND FRIEDRIUK i MEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAPS FCSRC-OVERING BUTT-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,629, dated October 6, 1874 application filed March 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ADOLPH WUNDER, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, and FarEnnroK MEYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Gaps, for
Covering Butt-Hinges, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to metal caps used for covering the leaves of butt-hinges and the screws with which they are secured, to improve the appearance of costly-finished hinges after having been secured in place, and in which a separate plate or metal cap is used for each leaf of the hinge; and the invention consists in providing the cap with a dovetail-shaped lip or flange bent on each end to overlap the top and bottom edge of the leaf of the hinge and be secured thereon by means of projections on the outer corners of the leaf, shaped to overhang the outer ends of the lips, and, by means of the inner ends of the same, passing under the studs or knops on the top and bottom ends of the joint of the hinge, which have also shoulders to pass over and clamp or look the ends of the lips. These knobs are made to screw into the joint of the hinge. By partly withdrawing or unscrewing they allow the lips to rise from under, and permit the removal of the caps from the hinge.
By these means the covering-caps may be made smooth, neat, cheaply plated, and arranged to cover the ends and face of the leaves completely without showing screw heads. They may likewise be very readily secured and locked to the hinge in a simple and durable manner and removed or put on in little time. I In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a face-view of the hinge provided with caps according to our invention. A portion of one of the caps and of the joint of the hinge is shown removed. Fig. 2 is avert-ical section of the same through the line a b, shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section'of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the corners of the hinge-leaves. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the cap.
A A represent the leaves of the hinge, and B the central joining portion, in which the hinge-pin D is secured. E E represent the ornamental knobs or studs with which the top and bottom ends. of the hinge-joint are furnished, and which are made with small shanks F, fitted with a screw-thread into the ends of the said joint. G represents one of the caps with which each of the leaves is furnished to cover'it to conceal the rough face of the leaf, and also the screw-heads of the wood-screws H, by means of which the hinge is secured to the wood-work of the door to which it is applied. Each end of the cap has a lip or flange, I I, bent nearly at right angles to its face, and the length between the lips corresponds with that of the leaf to which it is applied, as also the depth of the lip, so as to cover the leaf neatly on its face and top and bottom edge. The ends of the lips toward the hinge-joint are of a shape to correspond with the periphery of the hinge-joint, as shown. The opposite or outer ends K of the lips are cut or shaped narrowing toward the face, and give the lip with the former ends a dovetail shape, and it is by this dovetail shape of the lips that the cap is secured in its place, as hereinafter shown. he outer corners of the leaves have each a small projection, L, on the top and bottom ends, and the side M of said projection, joining the'o'uter end K of the cap, is correspondingly-shaped to meet said end properly, and thereby to engage over it and bind the same down. Each of the knobs E have two shoulders, N and 0, one to come close upon the hinge-joint and one at a sufficient distance above to admit the end of the lip I. The shoulder N has a periphery equal to that of the hinge-joint, and the lips I I of the caps join it. The shoulderO is larger in diameter, to overlap the lips and clamp or look them in place. To attach the caps the knobs are both unscrewed or withdrawn sufficiently to bring the shoulders N out of contact with the lips of the caps. The ends K of the caps are brought under the projections L of the leaves, and the caps can then be readily passed. in place upon the leaves. The knobs are firmly'screwcd, and thereby lock the caps to the hinge.
In fitting caps upon old hinges it will be preferable to form the projections L by simply securing in the ends of the leaves smali studs screw-knobs E E, 2.11 substantially as described corresponding thereto. 7 and shown, for the purpose herein set forth.
Having, thus fully described our invention, In witness whereof we hereunto set our whet we claim as new, and desire to secure names this 21st day of March, 1874.
by Letters Patent, is- ADOLPH WUNDER The detachable cap or plate G having lips 0r flanges I I, notched at K K, in combination FRIEDRIGK MEYER with the hinge-leaf A, provided with projec- In presence oftions L L for engaging with said notches, and HENRY DEIKER, provided with the shoulders N and O on the R, BOEKLEN.
