W. L. BUCHANAN COMBINATION CIGARETTE HOLDER AND ASH RBTAHIER Filed Jan. 17, 1925 l/Vl/E/Y TOR I WALTEILLBUcI-IANAN Patented Sept. 29, 1925.
UNITED STATES WALTER I. BUCHANAN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION CIGARETTE HOLDER AND ASH RETAINER.
Application filed January 17, 1925. Serial No. 3,190.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVALTER L.BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State, of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Cigarette Holder and Ash Retainer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ash retainers for cigarette holders and the like wherein a tubular ashretainer, adapted for detachable engagement with a cigarette holder, operates in conjunction with said cigarette holder to retain cigarette ashes in such a manner as to prevent obstruction of the retainer and a partial reduction of a draft through said retainer.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a new and improved ash retainer for cigarette holders and the like.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved device of the character described which will have the appearance of a smokers pipe.
A further object is to provide a device of the type set forth, wherein the cigarette is entirely enclosed to prevent dropping of the ashes from said cigarette.
A still further object is to provide improved means for enclosing a cigarette and retaining the ashes thereof in a manner which will not obstruct nor reduce the draft through the retainer and cigarette holder, and which will facilitate lighting of a cigarette therein.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the preferred form of the device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through a cigarette holder with my improved ash retainer attached thereto:
Fig. 2 is an elevation of my improved ash retainer attached to a cigarette holder;
Fig. 3 is a view of the holder with the retainer removed; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a cigarette holder of the usual type provided with a bit or mouthpiece 2, the usual bore 3 having an enlarged portion 4 to receive the end of a cigarette 5.
The cigarette receiving end of the holder 1 is provided with an annular shoulder 7 as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
The ash retainer 8 is preferably cylindrical in form and is arranged at one end to detachably engage the cigarette receiving end of the cigarette holder 1 and to seat 5 against the shoulder 7 thereon. The opposite end of the ash retainer 8 is provided with an enlarged lateral portion 9, preferably arranged to resemble the bowl of a pipe, and having an opening 11 therein arranged laterally to the ash retainer 8, the purpose of which hereinafter will be more fully set forth.
In operation, the cigarette 6 is inserted in the usual manner in the enlarged portion 4 of the bore 3 of the holder 1, and may or may not be lighted before the ash retainer 8 is detachably mounted upon the holder 1 as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The retainer 8 is mounted by inserting the cigarette 6 and holder 1 into the cylindrical portion of the retainer 8 until the end of said retainer 8 is seated upon said holder 1 and the annular seat or shoulder 7 thereon.
In this position the retainer 8 will entirely enclose the cigarette 6 and the enlarged portion 9 and opening 11 thereof will be arranged laterally to the said cigarette 6, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The cigarette 6 may now be lighted through the opening 11 and within the enlarged portion or bowl 9 of the retainer 8. This enlarged portion or bowl 9 is made sufficiently large to permit the introduction of a lighted match, not shown, when it is desired to light a cigarette while out of doors where a wind is blowing, the enlarged portion or bowl readily shielding the igniting flame and preventing it from becoming extinguished before the cigarette is properly lighted.
Another purpose for providing the enlarged or bowl portion 9 is to provide a sufficiently adequate storage space for cigarette ashes to prevent obstruction of the cylindrical retainer 8 and a consequent reduction of draft theret-hrough, whereby interference of the smoking process may be prevented. A still further advantage of the enlarged portion or bowl 9, is that ashes will be retained therein and not readily or easily be dropped from the retainer as in the case of the open cylindrical forms of ash retainers, thereby preventing hot ciga rette ashes, and even the cigarette itself, should it become inadvertently detached from the holder 1, from dropping into highly inflammable material, such as dry leaves and the like, While going through a forest.
When it is desired to remove and discard the butt of the cigarette 6 the retainer 8 may be readily detached, the butt removed from the holder 1, and any ashes residing within the retainer 8, or enlarged portion 9 or bowl thereof, may be readily discarded.
I am aware, that, prior to my invention, pipes have been used with detachable mouthpieces. I therefore do not wish to claim such a combination broadly.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combination cigarette holder and ash retainer comprising a mouth-piece arranged to receive and retain a cigarette; and an ash retainer arranged to detachably engage the mouth-piece and to enclose said cigarette throughout the length thereof, said ash retainer being provided with an enlarged outer end having a lateral opening therein to facilitate ignition of a cigarette within the retainer.
2. A combination cigarette holder and ash retainer comprising a mouth-piece to receive and retain a cigarette and provided with a reduced portion and an annular shoulder adjacent the cigarette receiving end of said mouth-piece; and a tubular ash retainer arranged to be detachably mounted upon the reduced portion and to normally abut against the annular shoulder of the mouth-piece to enclose a cigarette held Within said mouth-piece, said ash retainer being provided with an enlarged bowl portion having a lateral opening to facilitate lighting of the cigarette and retention of ashes within said retainer.
3. The combination with a cigarette holder of an ash retainer arranged to detachably engage the cigarette end of said holder and to entirely enclose said cigarette, said'retainer being provided with an enlarged bowl portion at its outer end and having a lateral opening in one side thereof to facilitate lighting of a cigarette held therein and also to facilitate retention of cigarette ash within said retainer.
4. The combination with a cigarette holder of a tubular ash retainer arranged at one end to detachably engage the end of a cigarette holder at the end opposite the mouth-piece thereof, said retainer enclosing a cigarette mounted within said holder and provided with an enlarged laterally extending bowl portion having an opening in the end thereof arranged laterally to said retainer, said enlarged portion being provided to facilitate lighting of the cigarette within said ash retainer and also to facilitate retention of cigarette ashes Within said retainer and away from a cigarette therein to prevent obstruction of said ash retainer whereby reduction of draft may be prevented.
In Witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
IVALTER L. BUCHANAN.
