Description

C. 0. LUCE,l 'Skate-Fastenngs.
Patented Sevpt. 29, 1874.
INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.,
oURTis o. LUCE, 0E BRANDON, vERMoNT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKATE-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming. part of Letters Patent No. 155,533. dated September 29, 1874; application filed February 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CURTIS ORANGE LUcE, of Brandon, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented an Improved Skate, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to skate-fastenings, and particularly to fastenings for those iceskates which have independent metallic toe and heel steps.
The invention consists, rst, in a small metallic thimble adapted to be screwed into the boot-heel, and to remain there without inconvenience, to constitute a fixed nut for a'swiveled screw or bolt in the heel-step, and to form therewith a very rm and substantial heelfastening. The invention consists, secondly, in the application to a metallic toe-step ot' edge-clamps adjustable to any size of boot, and having top straps attached thereto, and secured by a single screw, in combination with overlapping slotted shanks on the clampslides, and vertical and lateral supports formed by a recess in the toe-step, the whole v constituting a superior toe-fastening, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skate illustrating this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
This improved 'skate is composed of a runner, A, of any approved pattern; a metallic heel-step, B, rigidly attached thereto by a pair of rivets, e, traversing a standard or shank,
y, which is slotted to embrace the runner; a metallic toe-step, C, attached to the runner by a pivotal rivet, x, traversing a slotted standard or shank, w, and the fastenings to which the present invention relates more particularly.
For attaching the heel of the skate to the boot, a thimble or double screw, t, and a screw or bolt, s, are provided. The former is slightly conical in shape, and has external screwthread 1, and internal screw-thread 2, and a nick or groove, 3, to receive an ordinary screw-driver. In use, this is driven ush into the boot-heel, where it afterward remains securely embedded, causing no inconvenience whatever, owing to its small size. or bolt s occupies a vertical perforation, o, in a re-enforced portion of the 4heel-step B, behind the rear standard or shank y, and it is constructed, by preference, with an angular head, 4, so as to be actuated by a small wrench. It has a threaded point, 5, adapted to the internal screw 2 of the thimble t, into which it is screwed to attach the skate. When out of use, it is kept in place by the runner. A pair of adjustable edge-clamps, a, and straps b, riveted thereto, and furnished with buckle 6 and appurtenances, are applied to the toestep C, to prevent the ball of the foot from slipping edgewise, and to attach the toe of the skate to the boot. For the reception of this fastening a recess, c, is formed in the toestep, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, so that the clamps are supported vertically and laterally, projecting beneath the edges of the step. rI he clamps have slotted shanks, 7, which overlap within the recess, and are securely held by a single central screw, s2, having a Hush head. The standard or shank of the toestep receives this screw, and aifords the requisite hold.
The improved fastenings are held to be strong, compact, and neat, and of very superior convenience and simplicity.
The metallic toe and heel steps adapted to receive the fastenings may be cast of any preferred shape.
Having described Athis I my invention, I claim- 1. The improved heel-fastening, consisting of the thimble t, adapted 'to be screwed into a boot-heel, and the screw or bolt s, to engage therewith, in combination with the heel-step B, substantially as specilied.
2. The combination of the recessed toe-step C c, the clamps a, having overlapping slotted shanks 7, the straps b attached thereto, and the central locking-screw s2, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
. C. O. LUCE.
