UNITED. STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
03A A. com, or Inwm, rmsrnvanm, ASSIGNOR r wns'rmenoosn ELECTRIC a umuracronme COMPANY, A oonrona'rron or PENNSYLVANIA.
TOASTER WITH ATTACHED CORD.
Application filed Kay 9, 1823. Serial No. 637,755.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I,ORA A. COLBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Irwin, in the county of Westmoreland and 6 State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toasters with Attached Cords, of which the following 18 a specification.
My invention relates to electric heat1n 1 devices and particularly to electric table P toasters.
The object of m invention is to prov de a relatively simp e, compact, inexpensive and easily assembled terminal structure for an electric toaster.
My invention is particularly applicable to electric table toasters having a sheet metal base and side frames, trays pivotally supported by said frames and a heating ele- 20 ment supported by said base between said frames.
I provide a pair of spaced metal terminal members extending through the sheet metal base and insulated therefrom. Terminal pieces, of substantially L-shape, are secured to the tops of the terminal members and the ends of a resistor wire are suitably secured to the terminal pieces. The ends of a supply circuit conductor extend through an in- 0 sulating bushing in the base and are secured to the ends of the terminal members.
In the single sheet of drawings,
Figure 1 is a view, in side elevation, of a portion of an electric toaster comprising the device embodying my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a view, in end elevation, of the device illustrated in Fig. 1.
An electric toaster 11 comprises a suitable base 12 made u of a single stamped piece of relatively thin sheet metal and comprising a plurality of integral dependlng flanges 13. In the corners of the base are located supporting members 14 comprising relatively small pieces of a suitable heat-insulating material suitably secured to the end portions of the flanges.
A plurality of spaced sheet metal side frames 15 are located on the top of the base .12 and extend vertically upward therefrom.
The side frames are secured to the top of the base in any suitable manner, here illustrated as by rivets 16. A plurality of trays 17 are pivotally. mounted in the side frames g ative positions relatively to each other and on the base between the side frames may be employed and, as they form no part of my invention, this construction is not here further illustrated or described in detail.
This application is closely related to the device disclosed in the co-pending application, Serial No. 630,271 filed April 6, 1923, and assigned to the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company to which appllcation reference may be had for further details of construction of the assembled device.
The trays 17 are actuated by means of knobs 22 suitably secured thereto as is more particularly described and claimed in the hereinbefore mentioned co-pending application.
It is frequently desired to employ a nonremovable supply. circuit conductor in connection with a table toaster of this type, and in order to provide a'relatively simple construction for the terminals thereof, I provide a plurality of spaced contact terminals 23 which are insulatedly mounted on the top portion of the base 12 and extend therethrough. The members 23 may take the form of a bolt having a relatively large and substantially cylindrical head that is located above the top of the base. The lower part of each of the members 23 is provided with suitable screw threads. Suitable openings are provided in the top of the base through which the body portion of the members 23 may extend and a plurality of washers 24, of any suitable electric-insulating material, are located on each side of the base surrounding the body portion to insulate the terminal members from the metal base.
A terminal member 25, of substantially L-shape, is mounted on the top of each of the members 23, a small screw or machine bolt 26 being employed to secure the member 25 to the head of the member 23. The 105 upper portion of the member 25 may be provided with a return-bent portion within which is located the end of the resistor member 21 and any suitable or desired means of securing the two parts together may be employed. The two parts may be welded together or, if desired, they may be merely clamped together, the particular construction employed being such as may be found necessary in the operation of the device. 'The two members 23 are located laterally in spaced relation on the base 12, one of the members being on one side of the heating element comprising the two plates 19 and the other member on the other side thereof, both being located closely adjacent to one of the side frames 15.
A plurality of nuts 27 are mounted on the body portion of the members 23 and serve not only to clamp the members 23 on the base 12 but serve also .to secure the ends of a suitable supply circuit conductor 28 to the respective members 23 whereby the heating element may be energized whenever the other end of the supply circuit conductor is connected to a suitable source of electric energy. An insulating bushing 29 may be provided in the side or end flange of the base 12 to suitably insulate the supply circuit conductor from the base as it passes therethrough whereby also, of course, injury to the insulation of the conductor is prevented. When the toaster is being assembled, the terminal members 23 may-be placed in their proper operative positions on the base -12 and the further assembly of the device be proceeded with, comprising in general, the
securing of the side frames, the trays, and the heating element in their proper operative positions relatively to each other on the base. The terminal pieces 25 being relatively light may be secured to the ends of the heating element before such assembly and the terminal pieces may then be placed in. their proper operative positions on the top of the members 23 and the small machine screws may then be applied, completing the connection of the resistor to the terminal members already mounted on' the base.
The device embodying my invention thus provides a relatively simple and easily in-v stalled terminal construction for a portable table toaster.
Various modifications and changes may be made in the device without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are indicated in the appended claims or are imposed by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an electric toaster, in combination, a base, a pair of spaced upright side frames on said base, an upright heating element on said base between said side frames comprising a resistor wire and terminal pieces of L-shape secured to the ends of said resistor wire, and a plurality of terminal members insulatedly mounted on said base between said side frames and each having an upper portion for securing said terminal pieces thereto and a lower portion for receiving the ends of supply-circuit conductors.
2. In an electric toaster, in combination, a base. comprising a top portion and a plu rality of depending flange portions, a pair of spaced upright side frames on said top portion, a pair of terminal members insulatedly mounted on said top portion adja cent to and inside of one of said side frames, a heating element on said base comprising a resistor wire and terminal pieces, of substantially L-shape secured to the ends of said resistor wire, means for securing said members of L-shape to the upper part of said terminal members and means on said terminal members for securing thereto a supply circuit conductor.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 7th day of May, 1923.
ORA A. COLBY.
