EZRA B. LAKE, OF TOMS RIVER, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 155,523, dated September 29, 1874; application tiled I December V11, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, EZRA B. LAKE, of Toms River, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had tothe accompanying drawmeans of which it is connected to the iirst;v
secondly, in the combination, with certain mechanism for automatically winding up the curtain, comprising a spring, spur-wheel, and pinion, of a pawl attached to a cap on the end of the curtain-roller, and arranged to act in relationto a ratchet on the pinion-shaft, as hereinafter described, so as to permit the curtain to be moved readily, or retained at any desired height.
Referring tothe accompanying drawing, A is the window 5 B the lower, and B the upper, sash, to which the brackets and curtain are to be attached, as above described. The brackets are shown at O O, made each` in two pieces, c c1. The section c consists of a plate fastened to the sash by screws c2, bent at right angles at c3, and furnished with hooks or claws c4, and notches or lteeth c5. The other section, c1, is a plate of thepeculiar form shown, having an eye or loop, c6, which passes over the bend of the section c, and engages, as shown, with the notches and claws. By`means of this construction the bracket may be extended as desired, and will be kept rigidly in any desired position when the roller is in place, as shown, without the use of any screws, keys, or other similar binding devices, Whatever. One of the sections c1 has a suitable hole for the reception of the roller-journal. The other is rigidly fastened to a drum, E, which contains a spring, F, for actuating the curtain. One end of this spring is made fast to the drum or case E, and the other is fastened to the shaft g of a toothed wheel, G, which meshes with a pinion, H, the shaft of which, h, has a squared end, entering a cap, I, upon the roller A. K is a ratchet affixed to the side of the drum E, and K is a pawl upon the cap I, enga ging with said ratchet. The angez' ofthe cap I is cut away adjacent to the pawl K', so as to allow the latter to swing out when the curtain is rapidly revolved.
The operation is the same as in other springroller curtains. The curtains being drawn down winds up the spring. If released gradually and gently, the pawl engages with the ratchet, holding the curtain in a stationary position. If the curtain be suddenly released, the spring will wind it up, the pawl being thrown out by centrifugal force, and failing to engage with the ratchet;
I claim- 1. The adjustable bracket O, formed in two sections, c c1, the former having hooks c4 and teeth cf", and the latter having an eye, c6, and engaging with said hooks and teeth, as shown and described.
2. The pawl K, arranged to operate autolhave hereunto set my hand this 25th day of November, 1873.
