LOUIS CHAMBON, or raars, FRANCE.
i COMBINED G-UlVIlVIING AND CUTTING APPARATUS FOR PAPER, CARTONS, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April 5, 1923. Serial No. 630,145.
To lill whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Louis CHAMBON, citi- Zen of the Republic of France, residing at 64-70 Rue de Crimes, Paris, Seine, France, have invented a Combined Gumming and Cutting Apparatus for Paper, Cartons, and the like, of which the following is a specification. t Y
The invention has for its object a machine for gumming paper or the likevwhich is re` ceived in wide spools gummed and vcut to spools of suitable width. The machine has the following characteristics-- t A gumming element or a. number of independent adjustable elements deposits or deposit the gum upon a sheet of paper, the said sheet of paper being wound round a largefdrum which is heated internally or externallyv either by electrical resistance or by hot air or gas or any other suitable means for drying the gum. rlhe paper then passes between a series of circular knives or cutters and is rewound on independent drums.
In order that the invention may be fully understood I will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of machine embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof.
Figures 3 and 4 are detail views of the gumming mechanism.
Referring first to figure 1, it will be seen that the machine comprises a drum or spool carrier 1; a driving shaft 3 actuated by a counter shaft 2 driven by a pulley 4, the latter being actuated in any convenient manner; a large drying drum 5 connected through the medium of gear wheels 6, 7, and 8, on the one hand to a. rubber cylinder 9 over which passes the sheet of paper to be gummed and on the other hand to a transverse countershaft 10 carrying the pinions 11 designed to operate the groups of gummers 12; a series of groups of gummers 12 corresponding to the number of bands or strips to be gummed and carried by a transverse member 13, these groups beingconnected by gear wheels 14, to the aforesaid transu verse shaft 10; an arrangement of circular knives 15 and 16 upon which rest by means of their own weight independent spools or drums 18 and 19 carried by levers 17 carried by the pivots 29, an arrangement already known and adapted to the present machine and designed to out the sheet of paper after gumming and drying and rewinding the spools thus obtained.v
' The several parts above enumerated are aetuatedby the shaft 3. This shaft carries threeworms 20, 21, and 211, designed the one to drive the drying drum 5 by means of the toothed pinions 8` and 6, the other two worms driving the shafts 22, 22, carrying the circular knives or cutters 15 and 16 by the intermediary ofthe wormwheels 23 and 23. f
VThis drum drives, by means of the toothed pinions on the one hand a rubber cylinder 9 serving .as a table for the application of the gum by the gummingfrollers 12 and o n the other hand the gummers themselves.
Each of the gumming rollers is carried by a member 24 designed to occupy upon the common transverse member 13 the desired lateral position. This member 24 conists of a fixed part 25 upon which is mounted an adjustable carriage 24 enabling a suitable touch to be given by the gummer 12 of which the lower part is immersed in a cup or receptacle 26 containing the gum.
The rotation of the gumming roller l2 is assured by the pinions 11 and 14 driven by the main gear-wheels 6 mounted upon the drum 5. The regulation of the amount of gum upon the rollers is effected by a hinged scraper 27 which can be adjusted by the screw 28.
The machine as above constructed functions in the following manner:
The sheet of paper rolled around the drum 1 passes firstly into the gumming device where the gumming rollers 12 deposit upon it longitudinal layers of gum. The sheetof paper thus gummed then passes around the drying drum 5 and thence to the circular knives or cutters 15 and 16, functioning like scissor-blades, which cut the sheet longitudinally. This cutting is made at the middle of the line of gum, several millimetres broad, in such a manner that each of the bands thus obtained has its two edges will equally Well' serve 7for gumming sheets` or strips over the Wholesurface by simply replacing theY independent vrollers 12 :by a continuous gummingroller, the arrangement `for cutting the sheets into suitable widths being atfthe Sametime retained. In:
this Way spools :of gummed paper can be obtained such as are required, for example, lin ithe manafa'cture of postage stamps, gummed labelsand 4the like.
Having now particularly described. and ascertained the nature of my said'invention and in What manner vthe same is ato be performed declare that what I claim is:
1. A combined gumming and cutting machine ora paper strip, comprising, in comlai-nation, gvumming means for applying spaced longitudinal' strips of gum on the paper strip, a-dfrying means for the strips of gum, cutting means for cutting` the gummedv strip longitudinally Yalong the centerline of each-strip of gum, and'y means forV separately 1, said gumming means including, a transverse bar, independent carriages slidable on the bar, a gummlng roll 1n each carriage and .adjustable relative thereto, ,a scraper for each roll, and scre-W adjusting meansY yfor each scraper.
A machine for gumming and cuttlng paper, comprising, incombination, means for applying istripsof gum tov a piece of paper, means tor vdryingjthe-.applied strips:
of gum and means to sYi-mul-taneouslyzcut the paper Linto separate stri-ps and to separatelyY Wind `up each of said strips.
1. .A machine 4for gummingand cutting paper, comprising, means to simultaneously cut piece ot'- paper into separatestripsfand to separately Wind .up each. of the strips, suchr imeans includ-ing,. inA Com'bination, `aseries of vcircular cutters ,placed alternately ,in opposing positions toy each 4Vother and having .their opposing edges Aslightly overlapping in order to exert a shearing cutting action, two fixed` faxes, .levers pivoted` vfor free rocking movement on the axes, reels mountedl on the pivoted arms and bearing against the. cutters by their own Weight and thereby rotated. by the cutters.
.Intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
LOUIS CHAMBGIN.
