To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DAUS- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glendale, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Registering Carbon-Tissue Sheets upon Copper Printing Cylinders, of which the followlng is a specification.
This invention relates to amachine for applying carbon tissue sheets to copper cylinders and has for its primary object 'to provide a simply constructed machine for facilitating the accurate re ister and application of the carbon tissue s eets upon which the rints to be etched into the surface of the cy inder are delineated, to the surface of the cylinder.
More particularly, I propose to provide a machine for this purpose having an adjustably mounted pressure roller for firmly pressing the carbon tissue upon the periphe-ry of the printing cylinder as the latter is rotated and a plurality of adjustable gauge members for initially engaging the end of the tissue sheet to hold the same in position upon the surface of the cylinder whereby the prints of several sheets will be properly registered or alined, regardle s of the number of cylinders in the color It is also another object of the invention to provide an improved arrangement of adjustable supports for accommodating cylinders of various lengths, said supports having anti-friction bearings at their opposite ends upon which the cylinder shaft is adapted to be disposed. The pressure ap plying means is mounted above one end of the cylinder supports while at. the other end thereof a container for a developing bath is arranged. 'Iherefore. after the carbon tissue sheets have been. registered and applied to the surface of the cylinder the ends of the cylinder shaft may be rolled along the supports to the bearings at the opposite ends thereof so that by rotation of the cylinder in the latter osi-tion the tissue shegts can be immersed in the developing bat It is also a further general object of the invention to provide a machine for the above purpose which is of comparatively simple construction, not liableto get out of order and. which my with relatively little manuaPlabor. With the above and other pbjects in view, the invention consists'in the improved machine for registering and applyin carbon tissuesheets to cylinders and in t e form, construction and relative'arrangement of its several parts as will be hereinafter more fully'described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims. 7

In the art of intaglio photogravure printing, copper is electro-deposited upon the cylinder. This copper coating is ground down and provided with a very highly polished surface. Sheets of carbon tissue upon which the matter to be printed is delineated are then applied to the copper surface of the cylinder and such carbon sheets subsequently subjected to the action of an etching fluid whereby the impressions of the carbon sheets are etched into the surface of the cylinder. I-lerctofore considerable difficulty has attended the accurate registration and application of the carbon tissue sheets to the surface of the cylinder, such operation being not only quite laborious and timeconsuming but also not infrequently resulting in the misalignment or improper spacing of the prints on the different carbon sheets in relation to each other either longitudinally or circumferentially of the printing cylinder. My present invention remedies this difficulty and provides a machine which may be easily operated and which will greatly facilitate the registration and application of the carbon sheets to the surface of the cylinder with absolute assurance of the accurate registration or alignment of the prints.
frame 5. The frame includes similar end members which are connected at their upper ends by parallel longitudinally extending channel beds 6. U on the opposite ends of one of these beds the bearing standards or uprights 7 are bolted or otherwise rigidly fixed. Each of these channel beds is provided with longitudinally extending guide rails 8 between which the angular foot 9 of a casting is slidably engaged. These slidable castings are arranged in pairs, the castings in each pair being rigidly connected by a bar 10 which forms a continuation of the lateral extensions 11 of said castings. These extensions are slotted to receive spaced rollers 12 upon which the opposite ends of the shaft S of the cylinder O are rotatably supported.
The foot 9 of each of the sliding castings is provided upon its underside with a three ed sleeve or nut 13. In suitable bearin s at the opposite ends of each of the channel lieds 6 of the frame structure the ends of the shafts 14 are journaled. These shafts have right and lefthand threaded ortions engaged with the similarly threat ed bores of the sleeves 1.3 on the. sliding cylinder supports at opposite ends of the machine. One of the shafts 14. is provided at one end with a hand wheel 15, the other end of this shaft being connected by means of suitable gearing 16 to a transverse shaft 17, said shaft in turn being connected by similar gearing. 18 to the other of the shafts 14. Thus upon turning the hand wheel 15, the. two shafts 14 are simultaneously rotated in the same direction to move the supports for the cylinder towards or from each other, as the length of said cylinder may require.
In the upper ends of the bearing standards 7, the ends of a longitudinally disposed shaft 19 are journaled. Upon this shaft arallel beams 20 are rigidly fixed intcrme late of their ends. These beams at one of their ends are rigidly connected to each other by a bar 21 and in said ends of the beams a presser roll 22 is rotatably mounted. In spaced relation to this roll a shaft 23 is journaled in the beams 20 and upon said shaft adjacent each. end thereofan arm 24 is rigidly fixed.

A spring 37 connected to the other end of said lever holds the lever in a normal position as seen in Figure 3 of the drawings. Thus it will be clear that when the lever 32 is lifted to elevate the arms 24 and raise the gauge devices from their operative positions in proximity to the surface of the cylinder, the detent 34. will engage the lower edge of the" lever 35 and lift the same slightly against the action of spring 37 until said detent catches behind the shoulder 36 of the lever. Thus the lever will sustain this gauge means in the raised or inoperative position while the cylinder is being rotated to cause the roller 22 to firmly press the carbon sheet on the surface of the cylinder.
To one end of the shaft 19 a 'worm gear 38 is secured and is engaged by the worm 39 mounted upon a bracket 40-on the upper end of one of the standards7, said worm being turned by a suitable hand wheel 41. The other ends of the beams 20 are rigidly connected by the rod 43 which serves to partially' counterbalance the tissue sheet a-pplymade and these incisions in all of the carbon tissue sheets to be registered and applied 1 o the different color cylinders, are placed at a precisely the same distance from the longitudinal and end edges of the sheet. In the operation of the machine the edge portion of the carbon sheet having the incisions therein is laced upon the peripheral face of the cylinder which has been mounted upon the forward ends of the adjustable supports as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The gauge members 29 are adjusted along the bar 25 and the edge of the sheet is manipulated until the spring lingers 31 of said gauge members engage in the cuts or incisions T in the tissue sheet. A series of the tissue sheets may thus be positioned along thelength of the cylinder and after the gauge devices have been properly positioned in the incisions of each sheet, a suitable adhesive composition is applied to the edge of the sheet so that it is retained u on the face of the cylinder. The other en of the sheet may be conveniently supported by engaging the same in a suitable clamp 48 on one end of a flexible member 49 passing over a sheave 50, a weight 51-being attached to the other end of said flexible member, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The lever 32 is now moved upwardly until the detent I'll engagestheshoulder of lever 35 as above explained, so that the gauge means is held in an elevated position. The hand lever 52 is now attached to one end of the cylinder shaft S and said cylinder is rotated upon the bearing rollers 12. The carbon tissue sheet is thus moved beneath the prcssor roll 22 and is thereby caused't'o tirn'ily adhere to the peripheral surface of the cylinder. Other tissue sheets may then he applied in a similar manner until the surface of the cylinder is entirely covered. By reason of the adjustable gauge devices and the incision 'l" in the corners of the tissue sheets with which they engage, the accurate application of-the successively applied sheets is assured so that there will be precise alignment or registration of the prints upon said sheets both circumferentially and longitudinally of the cylinder. After all of the tissue sheets have been applied, th e ends of the cylinder shaft are lifted from engagemnt upon the bearing rollers 12 and. said the other bearing rollers of the carbon tissue sheets on the surface thereof ma beimmersed in said bath.
From t e foregoing description con sidered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of the improved machine will be clearly understood. It will be apparent that by" reason of my invention, much manual labor as heretofore required'in the registration of the carbon tissue sheets upon such cylinders may be obviated. Also, loss of time and destruction of the tissue sheets due to their inaccurate application to the cylinder surface is avoided. The machine as a whole isof comparatively simple construction, may be easily operated and will very materially expedite the execution of the process of hotogravure print-- ing as heretofore practiced in the art.
While I have herein shown and (described an embodiment of the improved machine which I have found very satisfactory in practical use, it is nevertheless to be understood that such machine is susceptible of embodiment in various other alternative constructions and I accordingly reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legimate changes'in the fOlll'l, proportion and relative arrangement of the several parts as may be spaced adjustable I fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In combination, means for rotatably supporting acylinder, a presser roll in superposed relation to the cylinder. and means for. retaining the end of lllitwtitl'l'flill tissue shtiet in adjusted position upon the surface of the cylinder in advance of said presser roll.
2. In combination, means for rotatably supporting acylinder, a presser roll to firmly press a carbon tissue sheet upon the surface of the cylinder, and adjustable gauge devices arranged in advance of the presser roll'to engage index means on one end 01 the tissue sheet and retain the end of said sheet in adjusted position upon the surface of the cylinder.
3.111 combination, means for rotatably supporting a cylinder, at pivotally mounted frame, a presser roll journaled in said frame, means for adjusting the frame to position the presser roll upon the cylinder, and means carried by said frame to engage the end of a carbon tissue sheet and retain the same in adjusted position upon the surface of said cylinder in advance of the presser roll.

In combination, means for rotatably supporting a cylinder, a frame, a presser re 1 journaled in said frame for engagement upon the periphery of the cylinder, meansmovabl mounted in said frame to engage the en of a carbontissue sheet and retaln the same in adjusted position upon the surface of said cylinder in advance of the-presser roll, and means to support said sheet engaging means in an inoperative position in the. frame when the cylinder is rotated.
7. In combination, means for rotatably supporting, a cylinder, 9. frame, a presser roll journaled in said frame for engagement upon the periphery of the cylinder, spaced.
arms pivotally mounted at one of their ends in the frame and'projectin'g forwardly of the presser roll, a bar mounted in the other ends of said'arms, and a plurality of adjustable gauge members adapted to engage ends of said arms, a plurality of adjustable gau emembers adapted to engage the end of t e carbon tissue sheet and retain the same in adjusted position upon the surface of'the cylinder, and means for supporting said arms and the gau e members in an elevated position in said rame when the cylinder is rotated.

In combination, means for rotatably' supporting a cylinder, a pivotally mounted frame, a presser roll journalled in said frame for engagement upon the periphery of the for rotatablycylinder, means carried by said frame to engage the end of a carbon tissue sheet and retain the same in.'adjusted. position upon the surface of'the cylinder 1n advance of the presser roll, and means for'rocking said frame to move the presser" roll and the sheet positioning means into or out of operative relation to the cylinder.

In combination, .means for ,rotatably supporting a cylinder, a pivotally mounted frame, a prcsser roll journaled in said frame for engagement upon the periphe cylinder, means carried by said fiame to engage the end ofa carbon tissue sheet and retaln the samein adjusted position upon the of the surface of the cylinder.v in advance of the pressere roll, means for rocking said frame to. move the presscr roll and the sheet posit omng means into or out of o erative relat1on to the cylinder, and additional means for ad ustably positioning said sheet engaging means indcpendentl of the presscr roll and with respect to sai frame.

In combination, means for rotatably supporting a cylinder, a frame, a presser 1o 1 ournaled 1n the frame for engagement upon'the, periphery of the cylinder, a shaft mounted in said frame, spaced arms fixed at one of their ends to the shaft and extendng 1n advance of'the presser roll, a plurality of adjustable gau e members mounted between the other en of said arms and adapted to engage index means on the end of the carbon tissue sheetand retain the same in adgiusted position upon the surface of the cylin er a spring-held. lever pivotally mounte in the frame; means for rocking said shaft to dispose the auge members out of operative relation to t e cylinder, and a detent member fixed upon the shaft and adapted to be engaged by said lever to sustaln the gauge members in an inoperative position.

In combination, spaced supports, roller bearings mounted upon theopposite ends of each support ada te to rotatably support the ends of a cylin er shaft, means mounted above one end of the supports for ap lyin carbon tissue sheets to the surface oft e cy inder when the latter is rotated, and a pan arranged beneath the o posite ends of said su ports to contain'a cy inder shaft adapted to be moved'along said supports and positioned upon the roller bearings at the latter ends thereof'whereby upon rotation of the cylinder the carbon eveloping bath,- the sheets thereon will be immersed in the developin bath. e
13. n combination, spaced slidably mounted supports, means for moving said supports towards and from each other, roller earings mounted upon the opposite ends of each support and adapted to rotatably support the ends of a cylinder shaft, means mounted above one end of the supports for applying carbon tissuesheets to the surface of the cylinder when the latter is rotated, means for ad'usting said sheet applying means into an out of. operative relation to the cylinder, a pan arranged beneath the opposite ends of said supports to. contain a developing bath, the cylinder shaft adapted to be moved along said supports and posi-. tioned upon the roller bearings at the latter ends thereof whereby upon rotation of the cylinder the carbon sheets thereon will be immersed in the developing bath.

In combination with means for rotatably supporting a cylinder, gauge means adapted to be engaged with index means on gaged with an end of the carbon tissue sheet' to releasably hold said sheet end inadjusted position on the surface of the cylinder prior to the rotation thereof, and means for mounting said sheet holding means for movement into and out of operative relation to the cylinder surface independently of the pressure roll.

In combination with means for rotatably supporting a cylinder, at presser roll to firmly press a carbon tissue sheet upon 85 the peripheral surface of said cylinder in the rotation thereof, a a plurality of frame adapted pivotally mounted frame, gauge devices carried by said adjusted position upon-the surface of the cylinder prior to the rotation thereof, and means for supporting said frame against swinging movement with the gauge devices disposed in an inoperative position relativeli to the cylnder during the rotation of the latter.
17. In combination, spaced supporting l bearings for a cylinder shaft and guide rails extending between said hearings to support the cylinder shaft for rollin movement from one of'the supporting bearlngs to the other,- means for applying carbon tissue sheets upon the peripheral surface of the cylinder when p the latter is mounted upon the bearings at one endpf said guide rails, and a container for a development batharranged at the other end of the guide rails whereby, when the cylinder with the carbon tissue sheets thereon is positioned upon the other bearno ings at"the latter ends of the rails, said sheets upon rotation of the cylinder are im mersed in the developing bath. i
