ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, A` CORPORATION F 1V.[]INNIE1S`0TA.1` c
PENCIL SHARPENER.
Application mea september To all whom t may concern: ,l i Be it known thatl I, PAUL H. /VELGKER, a citizen of the United; States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Pencil Sharpeners, of
which the following is a Specification.
. My invention relates to a pencil Sharpener which vis primarily adapted to sharpen wood pencils by holding the pencil Sharpener be-A tween the fingers of the operator and drawing or passing the cutting edge of the pencil over the endof the pencil to be sharpened.
The Sharpener' is designed to plane away the wood and sharpen the lead in the pencil as it passes over the same.
A feature of the invention is in a plane Surface on the Sharpener adjacent to cutting edge of the same which forms a gauge or guide to determine the amount of the pencil wood to be cut away and to prevent the knife of the Sharpener from cutting too deeply at one time into the pencil casing.
As the Sharpener is drawn over the pencil, it is rotated so as to shape the writing end with a uniform conical writing point. The shavings which are cut off in the sharpening are passed freely between the sides of the Sharpener and into the body portion of the same, and are freely discharged from the open ends of the body 4of the Sharpener, thus preventing shavings from interfering during the sharpening operation.
It is also a feature of the invention to provide a lead pencil Sharpener which is of a very Simple design, the body of which is formed from Sheet material which isadapted to hold the thin flat blade that constitutes the knife of the Sharpener at an angle in relation to the plane surface of the Sharpener.
In the drawings forming part of the specification FigureV 1 is a perspective view of my pencil Sharpener.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the bladeholding portion thereof.
Figure 3 is the section on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 1-4 of Figure 2, and illustrates only a portion of the pencil Sharpener, as it would appear in cutting away a portion of the pencil casing during operation.
Figure 5 is a Section on the line 5 5 of 13, 1921. seriali-Np. 560,299.;
sheet material offa suitable nature and is y bent to, form `a .tubular body portion `l0 from which projectsthe ends y11 which are adapted to lie fiatvfagainst each other to form a web-like engaging handle 12.y
The tubular body portion 10 of the `pencil Sharpener A can be lof any suitable cross sectional shape,` and is yillustrated in the drawing with the `outer angularly disposed faces 13 and 14,',The face y1a is formed withy stops 15 along one edge of the same againstwhich the back 'edge of the cutting knife 16 is adapted to rest. The cutting knife 16 is held in position against the stops 15 by the ears 17 which are formed by cutting out a portion of the face 14. The ends of the cutting knife 16 are angular-ly dis posed so that when they are engaged by the ears 17 the blade 16 is held firmly against the stops 15.
The cutting blade 16 is formed with a Sharp cutting edge 18 which is positioned adjacent a longitudinally extending opening 19 formed centrally between the angularly disposed faces 13 and 11 and of a length corresponding to the approximate length of the cutting edge 18.
The face of the portion 13 forms the gauge or guide against which the beveled surface or conical end 20 of the pencil B is adapted to rest while the cutting edge 18 is planing off a shaving 21 from the pencil. In this manner the surface 13 acts as a plane against which the surface of the pencil should rest which is being sharpened, as illustrated in Figure 4c of the drawing. If the pencil Sharpener is used in this manner and held in one hand while the pencil is held in the other and rotated between each stroke of the Sharpener, a very symmetrical sharp end can be formed on the same to make up the writing point.
The ends 11 form a flat handle 12 which is adapted to be easily held or engaged between the fingers. The ends extend from the body portion 10 of the Sharpener in a curve which allows the edge of the fingers to rest against the saine in a convenient manner while the sides 22 of the body portion 1() extend in approximatelythe same plane as the handle portion 12. This construction I have illustrated one particular form ofV my invention in the drawings, but )i desire to avail myself of such forms and construction as come Withinthe scope? off-the followA ing claims.
I claim: f i
l. A pencil Sharpener including a tubular body portion formed of sheet material, an engaging handle extending beneath said body portion and a eutting blade secured to and extending; the major part of? said body portion in a manner to eX e the cutting edge thereof to limit the depth ofthe out of said blade in operation.`
2. A pencil Sharpener, including a body portion formed ofa single piece of sheet material, oppositely inelineddaces formed on said body portion, avcutting blade adapted t'o-be securedy to said body portion, and a handle formed by the endsof the; sheet material forming said body'portion extended beneath said body portion.
3; A pencil Sharpener formed of sheet inaterial, a body portion having angularly disposed sides', the endsof said sheet material forming an engaging handle extending beneatlx said body portion, a cutting blade seeuredto one of the outery sides and anopening adiacen-t the cutting edge of said blade, the side adjacent the cutting edge of said blade acting as a rest to guide said Sharpener over the surface of a pencil in operation.
4; A peneil Sharpener formed from a single piece of sheet material shaped to provide a tubular body portion, openings at either end oflsaid body portion, a handle :formed bytlle'ends of said? sheet material adjacent -said body' portiony andI means fori-ned in` tegral with said body portion adapted to hold a cutting bladein-operating position on the face of saidy body portion.
5. A. pencilsharpener compris-ing a tubular body portion formed fromv a single piece of sheetl materiali, angularly disposed Aouter facesA formed on said body portion, openings on either endet said body portion topermit the discharge of shavings' and lugs struck up fromand integral with said body portion adapted to rigidly secure a cutting blade in operating position.
