a citizen of the United States, residing at Ben Avon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Capstans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to capstans, andparticularly to a capstan having means for applying either hand power or motor power thereto.
I provide means for applying motor power directly to the barrel of a capstan and also provide for the application of hand power either directly or through reducing gearing. I further provide a single connecting element or key which may be placed in different positions for connecting any of these sources of power, as desired. This key is preferably provided with indicating means showing which connection has been made.
There is also provided a series of reversible pawls for the capstan barrel for preventing rotation in veither direction, as` desired, and a cover is included for preventing engagement of the `pawl or pawls when desired. d
The connecting element or key is so arranged as to work at a considerable distance from the power shaft, thereby greatly reducing the load on the key and insuring long life in the driving parts.

In the illustrated embodiment `of theinvention, a base 2 is formed integral with` a post 3 which supports the capstan barrel 4. The capstan barrel 4 is rotatable on the base 3 and is securedagainst longitudinal movement by a shoulder `5` at the bottom and by a plateat the top. The plate 6 carries a plurality of planet gears 7 meshing with an internal gear 8 formed in the upper portion of the barrel'4, and also with a sun gear 9 which revolves 'freely on a central power shaft 10.1 y y The power shaft 10 is driven fromany suitable source of power below the deck, as byV a worm andworm gear 11, shown in dot-ted lines in Figure 1. The power shaft 10 revolves in a bushing 12 at the bottom of the postw3, and is free above that'point. The top ofthe shaft 1Q is squared, and a collar 13 is carried on the squared` portion.
The collar 13 is provided with a keyway 14 adapted to receive a `connecting key 15. The collar 13 is held in place by a top plate 1.6 which has an opening therein adapted to receive the key 15. Thekey 15 has a, shank portion 17 adaptedto engage `the keyway v14, and an offset toe 18 which may engage either the sun gear 9 or akey plate 19, depending on the particular form of drive desired.` `.As showninFigure 1, the shank 17 of the key is in` engagement with the collar 13 through the keyway 14, whileA the toe 18 is in engagement with one of a series of keyways 20 formed in the plate 19. The plate 19 is rigidly secured to the barrel 4, so that with thekey placed as position for hand drive through the gear adapted to make operative connection said driving tween the barrel and one of means when inserted in the keyway in one direction and being adapted to make operative connection between the barrel and' another of said driving means when given a different position in said keyway, land means for indicating which of said driving means is operatively connected to the bar rel, substantially as described.
(5. A capstan including a base having a post, a barrel rotatably mounted thereon, a plate removably secured` to the post and holding the barrel in place, a power shaft extending through the post, a central gear rotatably mounted on the shaft, a gear mounted on said plate and operatively connecting the central gear and the barrel, a freely rotatable capstan head, and means for operatively connecting the shaft and thev central gear, said means also being adapted for operatively connecting the capstan head and the central gear, substantially as described.
7. A capstan including a base having a post, a barrel rotatably mounted thereon, a plate removably secured to the post and holding the barrel in place7 a power shaft extending through the post, a central gear rotatably mounted on the shaft, a gear mounted on said plate and operatively connecting the central gear and the barrel, a freely rotatable capstan head, means for operatively connecting the shaft and the central gear, said means also being adapted for operatively connecting the capstan head and the central gear, and means for utilizing said connecting means to directly con nect the capstan head and the barrel, substantially as described.

A capstan including a barrel, a central power shaft projecting beyond the barrel, a head surrounding the projecting portion of the power shaft, a keyway in the head substantially parallel with the axis of the shaft, a key having a shank portion Fitting in the keyway and adapted to engage the power shaft, the key having a toe adapted to engage the barrel to make a direct power connection with the power shaft and the barrel, and reduction gears connected to the barrel, one of said gears having a keyway adapted to be engaged by the toe of the key when the key is placed. in altered 'position in the keyway, the shank being free of the power shaft when t-lie key is in such altered position whereby the head is operatively connected to the barrel through the reducing as described.
