UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. BOHLER, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENTIN MANUFACTURE OF WHIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 155,412, dated September 29, 1874; application filed October 25, 1873.
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN J. BOHLER, of Westeld, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in the Manufacture of Whips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figures l and 2 of the drawings are representations of sectional views of my whip. Fig. 3 is a View of my whip with covering applied. Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections of the same. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of my press, and Fig. 7 is a view of my whip without covering.
This invention relates to an improvement in the process of manufacturing whips, wherein a core of rawhide or other suitable material is employed either as a core for the stock and tip, or for the tip alone, or for the stock alone, in combination with narrow strips of leather which are built around the core.
The nature of my invention consists in an improved process of manufacturing whips by softening the leather strips, fastening said pieces together with thread without the use of glue or other adhesive substance, and subjecting them to considerable pressure, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
I take a strip of rawhide or other suitable material and trim it so as to form a tapering core, A, terminating, if desirable, in a tip. This core A I surround with narrow strips of leather, (indicated in the drawings by the letter ce) which strips are tapered from one end to the other, and may be of dierent lengths. When several of these layers are aggregated a tapered whip-stock is produced, presenting externally an irregular surface. This stock I wrap tightly with thread to keep the leather strips in their proper places around the core, and then soak it in water until the leather is quite soft. I then introduce the stock between two concave molds, which, when they are brought together, form a tapered channel, corresponding to the size and shape of the whipstock when pressed.
By means of the molds and a press the whipstocks, while moist, are forcibly compressed and condensed, and their surfaces left smooth, ready to receive the covering' c.
By my process I avoid the use of glue, described in my patent numbered 112,891, and also render unnecessary the shaving or turning off the stocks.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved process of manufacturing whips, consisting in the combination of softening the leather pieces, fastening these pieces together with thread, and subjecting them to considerable pressure b v the means set forth, whereby glue and other adhesive substance is dispensed With.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JHN J. BOHLER.
