When in the normal position, indicated in most of the figures, the acting face will lie in a plane substantially co-incident with the plane of the forward or sloping edge of the table, so that paper sheets delivered from the table will slide freely over and lie upon the face of the folder. The folder bar immediately behind the acting face is beveled away as at 37 and the forward face 38 of the bar lies in right angle relation to the acting face 36, and in substantial co-incidence with the transverse plane through the axis of the stub shafts. Immediately in advance of the. forward face of the folder bar is located a fixed cross bar 39 which bridges the space between the end frames. The bar lies in oblique relation and its upper edge 40 constitutes. a continuation of the plane of the face 36 of the folder bar when in normal position. The upper edge of the fixed cross bar is shouldered at 41 and is provided with a plurality of transversely cut recesses 42 which receive and guide the rear or acting edges of a series of stop fingers 43 of angular formation, as shown in Fig. 3, which stop fingers are secured to a plate 44, which plate is provided with a pair of forwardly extending guide blocks 45 slidably mounted within cross channels 46 in an obliquely disposed bearing plate 47 Each of the guide blocks 45 is provided "with an oblique guide slot48 which receives, an adjusting finger 49, which fingers are carried by a slide plate 50 which is guided to move transversely of the machine, so'that movements imparted thereto will cause the fingers 49 to ride within the obliquely disposed slots 48 in the'guide blocks 45 thereby imparting in and out movements of adjustment to the plate 44 which carries'the stop fingers 43, so that the latter can be advanced toward or retracted from the fixed cross bar 39. This serves to adjust the position of the stop fingers with respect to the folder bar and to regulate the position to which the paper sheets will be fed. A suitable handle 51 pivoted at the point 52 and pivotally connected at 53 to the slide bar 50 serves to impart longitudinal movements thereto.
- .The bearing plate 47 has bolted thereon a eompressorplate 54 the rear or acting edge ets 56 upstanding from the cross rail 21 of the frame, which arrangement affords a pivotal mounting for the entire structure comprising the stops 43 and associated parts as well as the compressor plate 54, so that movements of oscillation imparted to the bearing plate will serve to bring the rear or acting edge thereof into compressive relation with the edge 36 of the fixed cross bar, at a point immediately in advance of the folder bar.
Compressive movements are imparted by the provision of a downwardly extending arm 57 secured to the end of the bearing bar 47, which arm at its lower end is pivoted upon a pin 58 carried by an arm 59 which is clamped upon a rock shaft 60, which lat ter has clamped thereon an operating arm 61, which arm overlies a cam controlled arm 62 having near its center a pair of outstanding ears 63, through which ears an adjusting screw 64 is entered. The adjusting screw likewise passes through the rear end of the arm 61, so that by unclamping the arm from the rock shaft 60 and turning the adjusting screw, the relation of the arm to the shaft can be slightly varied.
The forward end of the cam arm 62 is pivoted upon the shaft 60, and the rear end carries a roller 65 which coacts with a cam 66 mounted upon a transversely extending cam shaft 67 so thatmovements of the cam will be imparted to the cam shaft and thence through the arm 57 to the compressor mechanism which will rock upon the bearings provided for the arms 55. The degree of movement, however, imparted to the clamping plate is so slight thatit constitutes in effect a straight line up and down movement jyith respect to the underlying fixed cross The roller 65 is held in acting relation to the cam by provision of a link 68, the lower end of which is engaged by a spring 69 secured to the end frame at any suitable point.

The fnext iiioveiheht imparted, will be a movement ofrevolution of the folder bar from the normal position to the position infit trols these movements, and this will force the folded binding strip back from the edge of the clamping strip, which latter will then be lifted by the contact of theroller 65 with the elongated reduced portion of the cam 66 during which interval the paper sheet with the folded. binding strip adhering thereto will spring back fromthe bentor flexed position, shown in Fig. 12, to a'flat position and will again slide down beneath the now elevated clamping plate in preparation for the final compressive movement ofthe latter. This final clamping movement will be momentarily effected by contact ofjthe roller 65 withfthe .short hump at the "end of the depressed portion of the cam 66. This final movement serves to tightlyv compress the folded binding strip with the edge of the paper interfolded into the metallic strip after which the clamping plate'willagain rise to permit of .the respring journal boxes will automatically yield in the event any ammmg occurs during the series of operations which is desirable in order to afford an element of safety against breakage.
The provision of the bridge plate 78 and the beveled formation of the folder bar, prevent the operator from inserting her fingers into a position in which they might be caught and injured by the movements of the folder bar, since it will be observed that even in the most advanced position of the folder bar, as indicated in Fig. 11, it will be impossible to injure the fingers.
I claim:
1. In a machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of a stop for holding the sheet in position within the binding strip, a clamping plate for compressing the strip onto the sheet, a folding bar for folding one edge of the strip over the clamping device and thereafter returning to normal position, and means for stripping the sheet and folded strip from the clamping device, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of stop members for holding the edge of a sheet within a binding strip of channel formation, a fixed and a movable clamping member for engaging the opposite side of the strip, a folding bar in position to engage the projecting edge of the binding strip, means for moving one of the clamping members to.
clamping position, and means for thereafter revolving the folding bar with the engaged edge of the strip over one of the clamping members and then returning the folding bar to normal position, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of stop members for holding the edge of a sheet within a binding strip of channel formation, a fixed and a movable clamping member for engaging the opposite side of the strip,a folding bar in positionto engage the projecting edge of the binding strip, means for moving one ofthe clamping members to clamping position, means for thereafter revolving the folding bar with the engaged edge of the strip over one of the clamping members and then returning the folding bar to normal position, and means for thereafter releasing the clamping members momentarily and thereafter imparting a second clamping and releasing movement thereto, substantially as described.
4. In a machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of a support for the sheets, a stop for positioning a channel-shaped binding strip with'the interposed edge of a sheet, apair of clamping members located on opposite sides of the positioned binding strip, one of said clamping members being movable, a folding bar mounted to move from a position adjacent one of the clamping members to a position beyond the other clamping member, means for imparting an initial clamping and releasing movement to the movable clamping member, means for thereafter imparting a finalclamping and releasing movement to said movable-clamping member, means for imparting ,a folding and return movement to the folding bar intermediate the initial and final movements of the clamping member, substantially as described.
5. A machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of a feeding table, a fixed clamping member in adjacent relation to the feeding table, a movable clamping member mounted for movement toward and from the fixed clamping member, a stop carried by the movable clamping member for holding the binding strips and sheets in aligned relation, a folding bar normally presenting its folding face in aligned position to the face of the fixed clamping member, a mounting for the folding bar adapted to impart a movement of revolution thereto to carry the acting face of said folding bar beyond the edge of the movable clamping member, means for imparting an initial clamping and return movement andafterwards a final clamping and return movement to the movable clamping member, means for imparting a folding and return movement to the folding bar intermediate the movements of the clamping member, a stripper mounted to move across the rear surface of the movable clamping member, means for imparting a stripping movement to said stripper after the return movement of the folding bar and prior to the final movement of the movable clamping member,
a bridge plate normally bridging the space between the feeding table and the folding bar, and means for retracting the bridge plate prior to the folding movement of the folding bar and restoring the bridge plate to normal position thereafter, substantially as described.
12. In a machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of a feeding table, a fixed clamping member in proximate relation to said table, a pivotally mounted clamping plate in co-acting relation to the said fixed clamping member, an adjustable sto movable with said movable clamping plate and limiting the movement of the sheet and binding strip into the space between the fixed clamping member and movable clamping plate, a folding bar normally standing in proximate relation to the fixed clamping member and mounted to be swung over into a position beyond the edge of a movable clamping plate, means for imparting a swinging clamping movement and return to the movable clamping plate, and means forimparting folding and return movements to the folding bar, substantially as described.
13. In a machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of a feeding table, a fixed clamping member in proximate relation to said table, a pivotally mounted clamping plate in co-acting relation to the said fixed clamping member, an adjustable stop'movable with said movable clamping plate and limiting the movement of the sheet and binding strip into the space between the fixed clamping member and movable clamping plate, a folding bar normally standing in proximate relation to the fixed clamping member and mounted to be swung over into a position beyond the edge of the movable clamping plate, means for imparting a swinging clamping movement and return to the movabl clamping plate, means for imparting folding and return movements to the folding bar, a bridge plate normally bridging the space between the feeding table and the folding bar, and means for retracting and afterwards restoring said bridge plate to afford clearance for the movement of the folding bar, substantially as described.
14. In a machine for applying binding strips to sheets, the combination of a feeding table, a fixed clamping member in proximate relation to said table, a pivotally mounted clamping plate in co-acting relation to the said fixed clamping member, an adjustable stop movable with said movable clamping plate and limiting the movement of the sheet and binding strip into the space between the fixed clamping member and movableclamping plate, a folding bar normally standingjin proximate rela tion to the fixed clamping member and mounted to be swung over into a position beyond the edge of the movable clamping plate, means for imparting a swinging clamping movement and return to the movable clamping plate, means for imparting folding and return movements to the folding bar, a bridge plate normally bridging the space between the feeding table and the folding bar, means for retracting and afterwards restoring said bridge plate to afford clearance for the movement of the folding bar, and a plurality of stripper fingers mounted to move across the reverse face of the movable clamping plate, and means for imparting to said stripper fingers a stripping movement after the return movement of the folding bar, substantially as described.
