i jApplication filer 1 (se r 26, 23. Seria1 N0. 67O,99 7.
To, all, whom it may concern:
Be it known. that we, GUs'rAvE ANDERSON and" O'soARN. JoHNsoN,citizens of the United States, residing at Berlin, in. the
county of Coos and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Rotary Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to PI'OVIdG a brush head wherein the bristles are retamed in a novel way, and to provide a novel means whereby abrush heamay be mounted readily on a shaft, and be held for rotation with the shaft.
It is withinthe province of the disclosure to improve generallyand enhance the utility of devices of that class to which the invention appertains.
7 With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, with- 2 in the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown, can be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Y
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a sectional view of the brush head, parts being broken away; Figure 4 is a fragmental elevation, showing the cooperating flanges of the brush head, and Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3, but showing a modification in the brush head; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the brush retainer, the parts thereof being separated.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a retainer, including an end memher 1 and an end member 2, the end member 1 having a tubular hub 3 whereon the end member 2 is slidable as indicated at 4, the end member 2 having a recess 5 adapted to receive a lock nut 6 having seats 7 whereby the lock nut may be manipulated by means of a spanner wrench, the nut being threaded upon the hub 3 of the member 1. Through the instrumentality of a set screw 8, or in any other suitable way, the hub 3 0f the retainer'ma be securedto adrive shaft-9. Annular. recesses 10 are fashioned in the end members land 2 at the periphery'thereof. The end members 1 and 2 are equipped with inwardly extended pins or projections 20, extended into the recesses 10.
The brush head, which is to be held by the retainer, may be of any desired construction. As shown, the brush head embodies a collar 12, sometimes made of fiber, annular side pieces 14, of fibre or leather board,
being mounted on the ends of the collar 12,
cross pieces 15, such as wooden rods, connecting the side pieces 14. If the body of the brush head is made of bristles, the bristles denoted by the numeral 16, may be bent across the members 15, as at 50 in Figure 3, and be bound tightly between the side pieces 14 as shown at 51 in Figure 2. It may be expedient to divide the side pieces 14 and the collar 12 of the brush head, as shown at 17, so that the brush head embodies laterally separable parts, the constituent members of the side pieces 14 being provided with overlapped flanges 18 having openings adapted to receive pins 19 which hold the separable parts of the brush head together whilst the head is being mounted on the retainer. Any desired number of openings 52 may be formed in the side pieces 14 of the brush head.
The lock nut 6 and the end member 2 may be backed off slightly, and the parts of the brush head may be mounted in the recesses 10 of the end members 1 and 2, the pins 19 being inserted into the flanges 18, the end member 2 being brought up against the corresponding side piece 14 of the brush head, and the lock nut 6 being advanced to hold the end member 2 in place, the pins 20 on the end members 1 and 2 of the retainer being received in the openings 52 of the parts 14 of the brush head, in order to con-. nect the brush head with the retainer, for rotation, In Figure 5 of the drawings,
parts hereinbefore described have been 15", without being bent as at 50 in Figure 3.
The so-called bristles may be made of hair, yarn, wire or any other material, depending onthe work in h l d.
Having-thus described the invention, what we claim is i 1. A brush head comprising a collar, side pieces secured thereon, crosspieces c0nnecting the side pieces, and bristles bound between the side pieces and between the cross pieces the collar and the side pieces being divided to form laterallyseparable parts in the brush head, the side pieces having over lapped flanges, andflsecuring devices. connec' mg he flan s- A brush head comprising a collar, side pieces secured thereon, cross pieces connectmg the side pieces, and bristles bound between the side pieces and between the cross pieces andlooped around the cross pieces, the collar and the side pieces being-divided to forni laterally separable parts in the brush head, the side pieces' having -over lapped flanges; and securing devices connecting the flanges.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing 13 .111 own, we have hereto aflixed our signatures.
