IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.155,383, dated September 29, 1874 application filed July 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. NEWOOMB, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art towhich it pertains to make .and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in selffastening buttons, consisting of a plate to which is attached a cylindrical shank, that is provided with an annular V-shaped groove close to the said plate, that is in a like manner provided with an annular tapering recess surrounding the annular V-shaped groove on the shank, in combination with a fastener consistin g of a perforated plate provided with an annular elastic split cylinder, the upper end of which is provided on the inside with an annular sharp projection, that is made to fit and rest in the annular V-shaped groove on the aforesaid button-shank, as will now be herein more fully shown and described.
On the drawing, Figure 1 represents a central longitudinal section of my improved button and its fastener when secured together. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the button without the fastener. Fig. 3 represents a ground plan of the fastener;
and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section 011 the line A. B, shown in Fig. 3.

a represents the button, provided on its under side with a cylindrical shank, b, as shown. An annular V-shaped recess, 0, is formed at the junction of the shank b and button a, by the making of an annular groove on the shank b, and an annular projection, d, on the under side of the button a, as shown. The fastener consists of a plate, 0, that extends upward as a hollow cylinder, f, of an inner diameter equal to the diameter of the cylindrical shank b. The cylinder f is slotted in four places, 9 g g g, as shown, and furthermore provided at its upper end with an innerprojecting V- shaped edge, h, of a form and shape similar to the annular recess 0 atthe baseof the shank b. The projecting V-shaped edge h, as.well as the upper end of the yielding s'plit cylinder f, will expand when inserted therein, and When the said shank b is so far put through the cylinder f that the projecting edge It reaches the annular Vshaped groove 0, the cylinder f will then contract and lock itself firmly to the button. The edge h, resting in the recess 0, prevents the button a from ever getting detached from the fastener e f. To attach this my improved button to garments of any kind, or any articles where buttons are required, it is only necessary to make a hole in the article to which the button is to be attached, of a size equal to the outer diameter of the cyliuderf, through which perforation the said cylinder is inserted, after which the shank b is pushed into the cylinder f so far that the sharp edge h comes to rest in the V-shaped groove 0, when the fastener gets so firmly secured to the button that it cannot be detached therefrom without breaking it to pieces.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim The button 01,, having the shank b and V- shaped recess, in combination with the plate 0 and the split cylinder with its re-entrant edge, substantially as described.
