IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,370. dated September 29, 1874; application filed March 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRAD S. EASTMAN, of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Rotary Fans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawin g, forming part of this specification, in which the figure of the drawing is a vertical central section of a rotary fan embodying my said improvement, the several parts thereof being designated by different letters marked thereon.
My present invention has for its object to improve the device secured to me by Letters Patent N 0. 134,740, dated January 14, 1873 and to that end it consists in providing a hollow standard, through which the shaft carrying the fan-arms loosely passes, the standard consisting of a series of sections so united as to .admit of being adjusted in such a manner as to elongate or shorten the same, whereby the shaft carrying the fan-arms is properly supported at a point near the arms as the same are moved upward or downward on the shaft, as circumstances may require.
In the drawing, A represents the base of the machine, which consists of a hollow cylindrical case having a closed cover. Within this case is arranged a system of geared wheels, to which is connected a vertical shaft, B, extending upward through the cover of the case; but, as said gearing constitutes no part of the present invention, a description thereof is not necessary to be herein fully given. G is a hollow standard, which is permanently attached to the cover of the case, and so arranged as to allow shaft B to pass loosely through the same. This standard is telescopicthat is, it consists of a series of sections, as shown in the drawing, which are so united, one to the other, as to allow one to slide into the other, by which means the length of the standard proper may be increased or decreased, as desired. The upper end of the upper section is so arranged as to form a bearing for the shaft, the object of which is to steady the latter, and prevent the same from having a slight vibratory movement when rotated by the action of the gearing. Loosely fitted upon shaft B is a sleeve, D,
which is so arranged as to admit of being moved to any desired height thereon, and firmly secured by arms E E, the ends of which are screw-threaded, and pass into said sleeve to and in contact with the shaft. These arms are made hollow, and within them are loosely fitted supplemental arms F F, which are so arranged as to admit of being moved therein to or from the shaft. The outer ends of the said supplemental arms are each bent, forming a loop or eye, within which is loosely secured a swivel, to. To the ends of said swivels are attached horizontal arms G G, as shown in the drawing. The ends of these arms are each also bent, forming a loop or eye, within which are loosely fitted swivels d d. To each of these swivels is secured a cord, 6, to which the fans f f are attached. These fans are made of two or more strips of tissue-paper or other similar material, united at the top.
In using my invention the same may be placed upon or over a bed to protect a person from mosquitoes, or may be placed upon or over a table to keep the flies therefrom, and is operated as follows: The sleeve D being properly adjusted on shaft B to bring the fans to the proper height, standard G is then so adjusted as to bring the upper end of the up per section in close proximity to the lower end of the sleeve, and the supplemental arms arranged at the proper position to describe the required circle. Shaft B is then made to rotate by means of the gearing, which imparts a rotating motion to the fans jointly with the shaft, and as the same is rotated an independent rotating motion is imparted to the sepa rate fans, thereby producing a compound and uniform motion of the same; and by the support of the standard the shaft is prevented from vibrating as the same is rotated.
Having thus described my invention, I claima The telescopic standard 0, in combination with shaft B, sleeve D, arms E E, constructed as described, and carrying the supplemental arms F F and horizontal arms G G, supporting the fans, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
