To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BERosaEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hermosa Beach, in-the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented in ell Elevators, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to elevators, and particularly well elevators such used for handling casing, tubing and the like inan oil well derrick. Elevators of this type have loads of great weight imposed upon the same and sometimes when'liftmg casing the casing will swing and in some manner the gate of such elevator may swing open dropping the casing with disastrous results to the flooring of the derrick. The present invention has for an object the provision of an elevator which cannot become unlocked when once looked without the operator intentionally performing such unlatching or unlocking operation.
As best illustrating the preferred form of elevator, reference is made to the figures of the drawing in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the elevator;
Figure-2 a plan view partly in section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view on the line ..3--3 of Figure 1; and,
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sec tional View onv the line 14 of Figure 1.
Corresponding parts in all thefigures are designated'by the same reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawing, I have designated the elevator as an entirety by A, of which a and b are jaw members of such elevator. The member a might be considered the body and the member 6 the gate. However, in the present construction the gate and body are practically identical in form, and it is believed that jaw members best define-the parts. The members a and b are hingedly joined as shown at l in any preferred manner, and one ofsuch members, the member a is provided with a bore 2. In the showing .the members a and b are both curved so that when the two members are cooperating they form a substantial annulus. Both members a and b are provided .with a lateral extensions 0, which extensions include two members spaced apart, as 3 and 4. These extensions are adapted to have a bail member (1 associated therewith, such bail member being in two parts or including two members as shown at 5 and 6. The extensions 0 arediametrically opposite when the members a and b are closed, said closed position being shown in Figure 2 by thefull lines. The member 6 is shouldered as shown at 7 to form what may be termed an extension or tongue 8, such extension acting as a part of locking means designated generally by 6. This extension 8 is provided with a nose portion 9 and with a transverse recessed portion 10, and such extension is adapted to be received within the bore 2 of the member a, The member a is provided with an enlarged portion 11, and integrally formed or otherwise associated with such enlarged portion is a handle f which in the showing is substantially U-shaped. The enlarged portion 11 is formed with a bore 12 and likewise formed with a recessed portion 13 in communication with the bore 2. The recessed portion 13 is adapted to confine a bolt 14 and inpart a handle member 15 which may be substantially in the form of a T, and which has apart thereof, as 16, passed through the bore '12 and in screw-threaded engagement as shown at 17, with the bolt 14. It is intended that the handle 15 should be totally confined or protected bythe handle f, as shown best in Figure 2. The bolt 14 is provided with a beveled nose portion 19. The bolt is normally urged into the bore 2 by means of springs 20 and 21, these springs being held to the bolt and to the extension 11 in any preferred manner. In particular the bolt is formed with recesses as shown at 22 and 23 for reception of ends of such springs 20 and 21, and a wall portion bounding the recess 13 is provided with bores or recesses to confine the opposite ends of the springs. To permit assemblage of the device the enlargement 11 is provided with a screw-threaded portion 24 adapted to receive a nut 25. Thus when the nut is removed the bolt with the springs may be inserted within the recess 13 and the handle member 15 then secured to such bolt at the screw-threaded portion 17. When the jaw members are closed the tongue 8 will enter the bore 2 and the nose 9 of such tongue 8 will contact with the nose 19 of the bolt 14 and force the bolt within the recess 18 until such time as the bolt may move back and be received within the notch or recess .jaws and it would be impossible to very readily swing such jawsapart. To ensure 10 of such tongue 8 to lock the members a and I) together. If desired, the member 6 may be provided with an auxiliary handle 30. To ,nlatch the parts a and bit is only necessary to grasp the handle f so that the fingers of the operator may close upon the part 18, whereupon a closing of the fingers will retract the bolt so that the parts a and b may be opened or swung apart into the position substantially as shown in Figure 2 by dotted lines. It is of course understood that the operator would force such jaws apart by grasping the handle 30, as well.
