CHICK-FEEDING TROUGH.

Application filed April 15, 1922. Serial No. 552,985.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, lVAL'rnR H. CoLLINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have made certain new and useful Improvements in ChiclcFeeding Troughs, of which the following is a specification.

The invention, relates to chick feeding and drinking troughs, and more especially to such a trough equipped with noveland useful safeguards and sanitary devices.

Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will beobvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.

. The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together withthe description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

The invention is directed to providing a chick feeding and drinking trough which is entirely safe and sanitary, and which is of simple, sturdy and durable construction; to providing a trough which is also of few and strong parts, which are simple, easy and economical to manufacture and to assemble; which is as nearly closed as possible, to promote safety and sanitation, and at the same time is as completely accessible to the chicks as possible; and which has a one piece closure and guard, which is readily placeaxble and displaceab'le, on the one hand to use the device for feeding and on the other hand to make the interior freely and completely accessi ble for cleaning and replenishment.

In certain of its features my invention is in the nature of an improvement on that of shown best in Figs.

With the objects heretofore stated, and others as well, in view, longitudinally disposed trough of sheet material and preferably of parti-cylindrical cross-section, or approximately so, is provided, having its ends securely set into correspondingly formed grooves or recesses in flat end plates, and with a longitudinally disposed, hollow or concave lid or cover setting upon and over the side edges of the trough, as av closure therefor, and having in its sides opening for the chicks heads, the lid being merely inserted upon and lifted from the trough to close it for feeding or to open it for cleaning or replenishment.

As embodied the trough body 1 is longitudinally disposed and is of parti-cylindrical cross-section, or approximately so, as 2 and 3. The trough is supported by flat, vertically disposed end plates 2 and closures for the trough. For fastening these parts together, ther are formed, preferably, in the endplates 2 and 3 arcuat depressions 4 into which the arcuate ends of the parti-cylindrical trough 3 which also constitute the'end a horizontal, unitary 1 lit, and wherein they are fastened in any suitable manner, as wise. The'trough is entirely free and open above and the edges are straight and single without overhanging or returned parts.

The end plates 2 and 3 have fiat, horizontally disposed footportions 5, respective-- ly, resting upon the ground or floor, and projecting inwardly for the sake of compactness both in use and in packaging the trough for shipment.

The sanitary and safety devices comprise the lid 6, already referred to, which is of longitudinally dished or upwardly hollowed shape and is of a length to fit snugly between the end plates 2 and 3, the lid and end plates thus cooperating in the effecting of the complete trough closure.

Th lid 6 has its edges 7 and 8 curved, as best shown in Fig. 3, to fit over and upon the edges of the trough 1, the lid slanting upwardlyand inwardly from these shaped edges to a central, longitudinally disposed apex or ridge 9.

This apex or ridge 9 serves a double purpose, as it constitutes a guard for preventing by soldering or other th chicks perching on the lid, and also coacts with catches on the end plates 2 and 3 which prevent possible lateral displacement of the lid. The lid is formed of sheet material and preferably of the shape already described. It is preferably of one piece, the

ridge 9 being folded and returned upon itself as best shown in Fig. 3.

The catches 10 and 11 prevent possible sidewise displacement of the lid, and are preferably punched and struck up from the metal of the side plates 2 and 3, respectively, as best appears from Fig. l.

\Vhen the lid is put on, the catches slip into the ends of the ridge or apex 9, the adjacent slanting sides of the lid assisting in and facilitating this. Then the lid is removed, it simply lifts off the catches. The openings 14 for the chicks heads are formed inthe slanting side walls of the lid (Fig. 1).

It will be seen that the trough is very light, strong, sturdy and compact, andconsists of only two separable parts, which go together and come apart very easily and simply, and that there is a complete opening of the trough withcorresponding complete access thereto; that there is easy and sufficient access for the chicks to feed or drink, while on the other hand the trough is largely enclosed and is protected against overhead perching, thereby being rendered safe, sanitary and-sufficiently weather proof.

It will be understood that changes may be made from the exact structure shown and described, within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.

\Vhat I claim is 1. A chick trough including in combination an open top trough, end plates for supporting the trough, catches extending inwardly from the end plates, and a lid of in verted V shape provided with openings for the chicks heads, positioned between the end plates and engageable with said catches.

2. A chick trough comprising in combination vertically extending end plates, a curved trough member secured to the end plates, a lid of inverted V-shape having openings for the chicks heads, the longitudinal edges of the lid resting on the longitudinal edges of the trough, respectively, whereby the lid may be removed by lifting it directly upwardly, the end plates extending above the open ends of both the trough and of the lid for closing both said ends. A chick trough comprising in combination vertically extending end plates, a curved trough member extending therebetween and secured thereto, the trough having its longitudinal edges bent inwardly, and alid of inverted V-shape having openings for the chicks heads, the longitudinal edges of the lid being bent inwardly and adapted to rest on the bent longitudinal edges of the trough, respectively, the lid being removable by a simple lift.

A chick trough comprising in combination vertically extending end plates, a curved trough member extending therebetween and secured thereto, the trough having its longitudinal edges bent inwardly, and a lid of inverted V-shape having openings for the chicks heads, the longitudinal edges of the lid being bent inwardly and adapted to rest on the bent longitudinal edges of the trough, respectively, the lid being removable by a simple lift, the end plates extending above the open ends of both the trough and lid for closing both said ends.
