CORNER STRUCTURE.

Be it known that I, WALTER MILLIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Structures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to corner structures having side members, such as the side wall of a store front or of a show case, or the side frame members of a picture frame, or the like, and has reference more particularly to the means for anchoring and holding the parts of the corner structure together.

those at the other side of the corner structure; to provide an anchor member which is easily adjusted or accommodated to any particular angle of the side members, and which is made preferably, of metal, although it may be made of other material, whether cast, bent or otherwise formed, and which will be of sufficient rigidity and strength to retain its shape and to withstand all natural and usual forces to which the members may be subjected in its intended use, but which will be sufficiently yieldable, or pliable to give under a predetermined applied pressure for the accommodating and alining of the anchor member, and the connected corner or cap member, to the particular angularity of the sides of the corner structure; to locate the anchor member so that it, or preferably portions of it, will set or fit between spaced portions or mouldings of the side members,
or side walls of the corner structure, and be thus fixed or anchored in its place, in order that the cap, when fastened to the anchor member, will be held in proper joining relation with the mouldings of the side mem bers; to so construct the anchor member that it can be bent under predetermined applied pressure to adapt it to fit any angular relation of the side members; to provide the anchor member with reinforcing portions, such as upstanding flanges, and with finger portions, preferably extending in opposite and lateral directions, of which one set of fingers Among the objects of the invention are to will engage or bear against the inner faces and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed by the devlce.
In the drawing illustrating one embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1, is an isometr ic view of the anchor bracket; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the corner structure with the corner cap removed; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the corner structure with the corner cap in place and with a part broken away to illustrate the mode of connecting the corner cap to the anchor bracket.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the corner structure is shown as comprising side walls 1, which may be of glass, as in the case of a show case or a window IOItllG front of a store. These side walls meet at an angle which may be a right angle or any angle greater or less than a right angle, and have at their lower edges inner and outer spaced port1ons or moulding 2 and 3, the moulding 2 bein joined together at their ends but the mouldlng 3 terminating short of the corner for the purpose of receiving a corner member or cap 4, as will be more fully hereinafter described. The mouldings 2 and 3 are fixed to a floor orbase member 5 and provide spaces therebetween in which may be interposed the anchor bracket 6.
This bracket 6 comprises a body portion 7 substantially shaped in the form of a V and having upstanding reinforcing flanges 8 connected to an upstanding angle or bentportion 9 at the apex of the V. It will be noted that the body portion 7 is so cut that two legs 10 of the body are held together substantially only by the connecting web ,or bent portion 9, this being for the purpose of permitting the bending of the anchor member at the web portion 9 so that the legs 10, as well as the flanges 8, may be parallel to the side walls 1 or mouldings 3, whatever may be the angle between the mouldings.

The outer end of the legs 10 have, preferably integral, finger port-ions or pieces 11- and '12, extending in opposite-directions,
the fingers 11 extending inwardly so that they mayengage with the inner moulding 2 and the other fingers 12 extending outwardly to'engage the outermouldings 3, when the anchor member is located in place in the corner structure, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The fingers 1-2 haveterminal flanges or feet 13 which may be bent more or less, to accommodate their hearing against the innerfaces of the mouldingsfi and their fitting in the spaces provided'between the inner and outer'moulding-s 2 and 8. The ends of the fingers 11 are rounded so that their contactwith the inner mouldings 2 will be easily accommodated as thelr relative angular relation are changed to litthe anchor member to the particular angularity of'the corner structure used.
The corner cap 4 is shaped to lit the outer r moulding and has its ends 15 overlapping the ends 16 of the mouldings 3 and its upper portion 17 bearing against the inner mouldings 2. It is then secured to the anchor bracket by means of screws 18 pass ing through suitable apertures formed in the cap and threaded into the threaded apertures 19 formed in the flanges 8. It will be apparent that as each screw is tightened, it will force the cap against the end of the adjacent moulding 3 and also draw the proxi mate anchor piece 12 in closer contact with the inner face of the moulding 3, thus tightly clamping the end of the moulding between the cap and the anchor member. It will also be noted, that any tendency toward longitudinal movement of the other moulding will be prevented by reason of the finger piece 11 abutting against the outer face of the inner moulding 2. In this way thestructure is rigidly held together.
The cap 4 is surmounted by suitabl and preferably sheet metal, connecting members 20 and 21 for connecting the ends of the side walls 1, and also interior pieces 22 cooperating with the parts 20 and; 21 in completing the holding ofside walls in place, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
While I have herein described and illustrated upon the drawing, one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular structure, details and arrangement of parts described and shown but that other constructions, details and arrangements of parts are comprehended by my inventionwit-hout departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In corner structures having side members, the combination of a corner member. joining the proximate ends of said side members, said side members having spaced portions 1 providing recesses between said portions at the end of said members, an anchor member spaced from said corner member and having portions thereof fitting into the said recesses between said spaced portions, andmeans for detachably securing said corner member to said' anchor member, said corner member housing said anchor member. 1
2. In corner structures having side members, the combination of a corner member joining the proximate ends of saidside members, said side members having inner and outer mouldings, an anchormember engaging saidmouldings, and means fasten 7 mg said corner member to said anchor member.
3. In a corner structures having side mem bers, the combination of a corner'membe'r joining the proximate ends of said side 7 members, said side members having inner and outer mouldings, an anchor bracket having finger portions bearing against said inner and outer mouldings, and meanssecuring said corner member to said anchor bracket. 7 r
4:. In corner structures having side members, the combination of a corner cap over- 7 lapping the ends of saidside members,- said" side members having inner and outer mouldings, an anchor bracket located between said inner mouldings and said corner cap and extending into contact'with the inner faces of said mouldings, and fastening members connecting said corner cap to said anchor bracket whereby said corner cap is held against said side members.
5. In corner structures having spaced inner and outer side members, the combination of a corner member joining the proximate ends of said outer side members, an anchor member disposed in the space between said side members and comprising a substantiallyrig-id body portion and laterally extending finger portions engaging said side members, saidv body portion being ad'- justable to fit the angularity of said side members, and means securing said corner member to'said anchor member.
6. I11 corner structures having spaced inner and outer side members, the combination of a corner member joining the proximate ends of said outer side members, an
anchor member comprising a substantially rigid body having portions engaging said inner and outer members and yieldable to applied pressure for adjustment to the angularity of said side members, and means securing said corner member to said anchor member.
7 In corner structures having side members, the combination of a corner member having lateral walls joining the proximate ends of said side members, an anchor member comprising a body portion having flanges and finger portions engaging with said side members, and securing members passing through perforations in said lateral walls and into said flanges for connecting said corner member to said anchor member.
8. In corner structures having side members at an angle to each other, the combination of a corner cap joining the proximate ends of said side members, said side members having spaced sash mouldings, an anchor member having angularly disposed inwardly and outwardly extending fingers engaging with said mouldings in directions at an angle to each other, and securing members connecting said corner cap to said anchor member.
9. In corner structures having side members, the combination of a corner member joining the proximate ends of said side members, an anchor member comprising a body portion having upturned reinforcing flanges and laterally extending portions, each side member having spaced mouldings, said lateral portions extending intov the space between said mouldings and bearing thereagainst, and securing means between said corner and anchor members.
10. In corner structures, hollow mouldings having spaced ends, a corner member joining said ends, an anchor member extending into the hollow of each of said ends and covered by said corner member, and means securing the corner member to the anchor member. I
11. In corner structures, mouldings having spaced walls and spaced ends, a corner member joining the outer end walls of the mouldings, an anchor member extending into contact with the inner faces of the spaced walls of the mouldings, and means securing the corner member to the anchor member and clamping the ends of the outer walls of the mouldings between the anchor member and the corner member.
