Be it known that I, CHARLES S. BATDORF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and.
State of New York,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Computing-Price-Sales Devices, of which the following is a specification. A
The object of the invention is to provide a portable manually operative'device tol be carried by a saleman at a gas'station, for illustration,` for computing the total price or charge fora quantity of gasolene sold` which sleeve is secured an operatingknob Y by which the sleeve andWheelsthereOn are rotated to the proper,extentand which bears numbers, from 1 to 2(7) inclusive, indicating gallons, to guide the operator in setting the impression wheels. The wheels 42, 44, 50' by reason of their engaging the ink- rollers 32, 33, will make ink impressions on the original check, as shown in Fig. 7, and these will be transferred to the duplicate check from the carbon back on the original check. Inthis in'- stance also-the following will be transferred to the vduplicate check, to-wit? The means for enabling'the wheels 42, 44, 50 and plate 36 to make their impressions on the sales-slip consists of the pivoted platen 21 having the yielding rubber ,or other pad 6 0 on itsupper face. `Two of thenslips from the pad shown in Fig. 6, one being an original and the other the duplicate, are inserted betweenv the platen 21 andl the body of the and after the Vslips havebeen positioned thehandle 23 is squeezed toward the handle '24, andthis causes theplaten 2l to press the slips againstthe wheels 42,44, 50 and plate36 and thereby said .wheels and plate lare. enabled to make their impressions .on the original slip and by thecarbon transfer, onto the duplicate sales slip. yFrom the foregoing rdescription lit will be understood that the wheels 42, 44, 50 are set to make'their impressions by the manual rotation of the knob 46 and sleeve 41.. The
wheel 42 being turned to the lower side of -v said ,wheel, and also inthe wheels `44, 50'being so turned that the appropriate charac- .ters thereon, according to the numeral at the` lower side 'of'ftheuwheel42will appear in impression position at the bottomsof ysaid wheels. The characters 37 on the plate 36 may be of sharp character so as to leave their imprint on the original check'shown in Fig. 7 while transferring through the carbon on the back of said check the like. characters to the duplicate check or'slip shown in Fig. 6. a The device of my invention will be used by vsalesmen selling gasolene at the customarygas stations or'elsewhere, and its purpose is to compel fairness inthe sales transactions 'and protectboth the customer and the owner of the station.; -With the use of my device a sales transaction is recorded in duplicate on the two slips, one-of which is retained in the pad for the owner of the station and the other is handedto the customer' and apprises `him of the number of gallons of gasolene delivered to .him and the totalp'rice therefor.

A computing sales device as claimed in claim l, in which said shaft is tubular and in which said body portion has a stationary axle on which said tubular shaft is mounted and which axle is removably secured at its inner end to said rigid back portion and thence extends through the open front end of said casing.
4. A computing sales device as claimed in claim 2, in which the body portion has a longitudinal dove-tail groove to receive said impressionV plate.

A computingfsales device as claimed in claim l, in which said knob and price wheel are removable and in which said price wheel has removably positioned therewith an impression price ring or wheel bearing a series of characters aligned with the characters on the price wheel and denoting a fraction of a cent and multiples thereof to be impressed on the sales slips.
6. A computingr sales device as claimed in claim l, in which said body portion has inking rollers mounted therein in the path of motion of said quantity and price impression wheels, said inking rollers being positioned in spaces left therefor at theends of said platen.
7. A computing sales device as claimed in claim l, in which said platen is pivoted at one end of said body portion and in which means are provided on said body portion and platen for squeezing the same together and against the sales slips interpo-sed between them.
8. A manually operative computing sales device, comprising a body portion and a platen between which sales slips may be pressed to receive thereon the record of a sale,
said body portion comprising anelongated casing having a rigid back portion and being open at its outer or forward end and having a rotary shaft with means thereon for rotating it and associated with a set of numerals to guide the operator in rotating said shaft and which numerals are indicative of the quantities of merchandise sold, said shaft being insertible and removable through the open outer end of said' casing, an impression wheel mounted on said shaft and having thereon in relief a series of numerals corresponding with the aforesaid guide numerals and alsoindicative of the quantities of merchandise sold, and an impression wheel mounted on said shaft and bearing in relief impression characters de noting the total price to be charged for the units represented by the corresponding gated casing having a rigid back portion.
and being open at its outer or forward end and having'a rotary shaft with means thereon for rotating it and associated with a set of numerals to guide the operator in' rotating saidl shaft and which numerals are indicative of the quantities of merchandise sold, said shaft being insertible and removable through the open outer end of said casing, an impression wheel mounted on said shaft and having `thereon in relief a series of numerals corresponding with the aforesaid guide numerals and also indicative of the quantities of merchandise sold, an impression wheel mounted on'said shaft and bearing in relief impression character denoting the total price to be charged for the units represented by the corresponding numerals in said guide set and on said quantity impression wheel, and a stationary plate mounted in said body portion between said impression wheels and having characters relevant to the sales, said impression wheels and said plate being adapted to make a record on the sales slips pressed against them of the quantity of merchandise sold, the total charge therefor and such other data as said plate may carry, said stationary plate representing the bottom of said casing and having the lower edges of the sides of the casing secured to it.
