P. H. SCHNORMEIER AUTOMOBILE RADIATOR SPOUT ATTACHMENT Patented Sept.v 1, 1925.
PAL H.V`SCHNO`R1VIEIER, O'F HUBBARD, IOWA.
AUTOMOBILE v RADIATOR-SPOUT ATTACHMENT.
y Application led July 10, 1924. Serial No. 725,270.
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that IPAUL H. SCi-INOR-k Mrunn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hubbard, inthe county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented a. certain new and useful Automobile RadiatorSpout Attachment, of which the following is a specification. .Y
The ob'ectrof my inventionisto provide a radiator-'spout 4attachment. of simple, du-v rable and 'comparatively inexpensive :con-1 struction, whereby it can bey marketed at a low cost. A
lStill a furthen obj ect is to provide ,a spout l had for the automobile. radiator.
Itmay be here-mentioned that in some typesof automobiles; preferably the Ford,
the overflow pipe has its upper openy end'dis-yA posed within thefilling spout of the radiator itself and when the radiator is lbeing filled, the overfiow ypipe. is also being filledy and it is my object to provide in connect-ion with my improved spout,Y which is funnelV Shaped, a cover or apron device which will extendfover the upper endV of the overflow pipe and prevent water entering'therein during time of 'filling of the radiator.
The apron `is soarranged so as not to interfere with the functioning of the overflow p1 e.
,I'iVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, `pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, in which: n v
Figure 1` is a side elevation of my improved radiator spout attachment secured to the ordinary spout of an automobile radia tor.
Figure 2 is a front View of the same, parts being broken away and shown in section to better illustrate the construction, especially ofthe apron which extends over the overflow pipe.
Figure 3 is a central, vertical, sectional view taken on line 3-3 of F1gure'2.
Figure 4 is a top, plan view of the radiator spout attachment. Y
My attachment is designed to eoact with a radiator spout 10 which is of the-.ordinary construction and may be provided with an internally screw threaded portion 11 which ordinarily has the cap' or cover `secured thereto. Y
It may be here mentioned that my attaclr ment` can be secured to a screwthreaded por'- tion on a spout or neck 10 either on the outside thereof or the inside thereof, depending upon the Lparticulartype ofradiator spout the attachment is to be applied to. s Y
The radiatorspout 10 is in communica-tion with an ordinary lradiatory 1K2v having an overow pipe-13 .mounted therein with its upper open end in position within the spout 110,` as clearly shown in Figures ,thfrawnssj My improved attachment consists of a body yportion 14, which is oval shaped in horizontal section land `which isl funnel shaped in vertical.crosssection The body portion 14 may be provided with suitable curvatures so as to provide a device of attractive appearance. 1
Quand` 3of The lower end of the body portion 1li-,is Y
provided with a suitable nipple or neck 15 which is externally screw threaded, as at 16, which cooperate with the screw threads 11 on the spout 10.
In order to forni a perfect connection be.
tween the spout 10 yand an attachment, I
place a gasket 17 between the neck 15 and the spout 10. Y Y
The upper end o-f the body portion 14: is
kprovided withV an opening ofy substantial size and has an upwardly extending flange 18 thereon, whch cooperates with the cover or cap 19, as' will hereinafter be described.
Thecap 19 is formed with a pair of ears 20, which are positioned adjacent a pair of ears 21 formed on the body portion 14 on the back side thereof.
Rivets 22 or other suitable pintle rods are extended through the pairs of ears 2O and 21 for forming a complete hinge connection between the cover 19 and the body portion `14 of the attachment.
The cover member 19 is formed with a downturned flange 23, which is positioned along the side of the flange 18.
A gasket 24 is placed within the cover 19 and rests upon the upper edge of the flange 18 when the cover is in closed position, thus forming a water tightV seal betweenthe hinged portion of the cover 19 and the body portion 14;.
In orde-r to retain the hinge cover member 19 in closed position, I form a lug 25 on the cover member 19 whch rests substantially above a. lug 26 formed on th'ebo'dy portion 14. V v
The lug 26 is formed in its under side with a curved portion 27 so as to `:form a hook or receiving notch.
A movable latch 28 is connected to the lug 25 by a. link connection 29. The link connection 29 straddles the lug 27 so that when the latch 28 is in position with its upper endV resting in the notch 27, a closure member will be hadavhich will retain the cover 19 in proper closed position.
rlhe latch 28 can be disengaged 'li-'rom the notch 27 by swinging it outwardly and overcomingV the resistance offered by the hook portion onl the lug 26 formed by the notch 27.
The cover 19 may be provide-'d with any Suitable configurationsvu() for adding to-th'e appearance of thev attachment.
In order to prevent water from `going into the overiow vpipe during-the time 'of fil-ling n of the radiator, I have providedV anff apron The apron 31 vvcan be either formed inteL gral with the body portion 14 or beinade as a separate piece and solderedr tofthev inner surface or welded to the inner surface of the neck or nipple 15.
The apron 31 extends over the overflow pipe 13 thus preventing any water entering therein during the filling of' the radiator.
The overflow pipe 13 is free to operate for carrying any overflow water from the radiator in case 1of the water in the radiator becoming heated and overflowing.
Some changes may be made in the construction an'd arrangement of thevarious parts of my invention, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and: it is 4my intention t-o cover by my claims, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included Within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with an automobile radiator havinga filling spout and an overflow pipe therefor, an attachment adapted to be secured` to the radiator spout inc-luding a body portion, a cover for said'bodyv portion and an apron integrally attached to the body portion extending over the overflow pipe. l
2. In con'ibination with a radiator having a filling spout and an overfiow pipe. therefor7 an attachment comprising a body portion substantially funnel shape, neck on said body portion designed to coact with said filling spout, a cover memberhinged to said body portion, a latch for holding said cover member in closed position and an apron integrally attached t'o said neck of said attachment and extending over the end or" said overflow pipe as and: forV the. purposes stated. y
3. In Vcombinati-on with an automobile radiator having a lling spout and an overflow pipe therefor, an attachment adapted to be secured to the radiator spout including a body portion, a lcover for said body portion and an apron forming an extension of the lower edge 'of' said body portion adapted to extend over the overflow spout.
