Application filed August 8, 1924. Serial No. 730,938.
of a neck band and collar and then manipu'-' lated to a slight extent so as to fasten it in position and preclude its casual displacement.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in theimprovement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a view showing a collar and my novel button properly arranged relative thereto, and makin clear the fact that the head of the button is of greater length than width and is adapted when properly manipulated to stand at a right angle to the button holes of a collar and neck band.
Figure 2. is an enlarged elevation of my novel collarbutton per se.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view of sectional character showing one of the shank jaws of the collar button removed.
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The collar 1 is provided with button holes 2 and is otherwise of the conventional const ruction.
My novel collar button is formed of any material or materials compatible with its purpose and comprises among other elements a head 3 which is.preferably of the configuration illustrated though it may be of any other appropriate configuration provided it is of a greater length than width as is clearly brought out in Figure 1.
Integral with or otherwise fixed to the head 3 is a stem 4, theportion 4 of the stem adjacent to the head 3 being of angular cross-section and being tapered to about the point 6 in Figure 4, and the remainder of the stem being of circular cross-section as clearly brought out in Figures 4 and 5 so as to permit of ready turning of the stem about its axis. The rear end of the stem 4 is upset or is otherwise provided with an enlargement designated by 7.
In addition to the head 3 and the stem 4 characterized as described, my novel collar button comprises a base 8 and a shank 9,
the said shank 9 being split as designated by '10 from the forward end of the shank to about the point 11 shown in Figure 4, and the inner sides of the resilient jaws formed by the said split being partly of angular form in cross-section and tapered to accommodate the stem portion 4, and the base 8 and the rear portion of the jaws of the shank being provided with a circular bore 12 for the reception of the circular portion of the stem4.
In assembling the parts of my novel button, the stem is inserted through the body formed by the base 8 and its shank and is then upset as designated by 7 or is otherwise provided with an enlargement to retain it in the body and so that the head 3 bears snugly against the forward end of the shank.
In virtue of the construction of my novel button it will be manifest that the head 3 can be passed with great facility through the neck band hole and the buttonholes of a collar and then by the application of a little stress the head 3 can be turned to a position at right angles to the buttonholes with the result that displacement of the collar button is precluded. When the head 3 is turned as stated it will be manifest that the shank aws will give, and then will spring inwardly so as to strongly though yieldingly hold the head 3 in position at right angles to the buttonholes. It will also be appreciated that when it is desired to remove the button it is simply necessary to again apply a little stress to the headB and turn the same back to a position in coincidence with the buttonholes when the head 3 may be readily withdrawn through the buttonholes.
.It will also be gathered from the foregoing that the cross-sectional shape of the shank of my novel button is such that the said shank is heldagainst turning in the buttonholes with the result that there is no liability described turning of the head 3 and its in the general shape of an ordinary button, and is calculated notwithstanding its adjustablecapacity to withstand the usage tc which collar buttons and the like are ordinarily subjected.
I have specifically described the preferred embodiment of m .invention'in order to impart an exact un erstanding of thesaid embodiment, .thou h I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to all of the details of my disclosure, the scope'of my invention being defined by my appended claim within which changes may be made without departing from my invention.
Having described my invention, whatI claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, i's: 7
A buttonhaving a .base and a split shank forming resilient jaws the interiors of which are of angular cross-section, in combination with a head of greater length than width opposed to the end of the shank, and a stem fixed with respect to said head and havin a portion of angular cross-section dispose between said jaws and also havin largement at its rear end oppose base; the said shank being of greater len th than width in cross-section, and the angu ar portion of the stem and the corresponding portions of the shank jaws bein rearwardly tapered, and the rear portion 0 the stem being of circular cross-section.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLARD B. DAVIS.
