Description

Sept. 1. 1925.
V. J. MULLERY coLLAPsIBLE Box Filed March 16, 1921 Patented Sept. l, 1925.
UNTELD PATENT OFFICE.
VALENTENE J. MULLERY, OF ST. EAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO MULLERY PAPER BOX COMPANY, A. CORPORATON OF MINNESOTA.
COLLAESIBLE BOX.
Application filed March 16, 1921.
To @ZZ iti/20m` it may concern Be it known that l, VALnNTINr J. MUL- LERY, a citizen of the United States, and resident et St. Paul, in the county oiE Ramsey and State oi. Minnesota, have invented a new and uset'ul tmprovement in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to collapsible boxes and has for its object to provide a box `termed of a single piece oit material adapted to be collapsed in a compact state for shipping or to be readily opened up and assembled for use.
Another object of the invention is to cut the box out of a sheet oi. material so as to practically utilize every particle ot' the material and so avoid waste.
A still further object is to provide seams l0 on the bottom flaps of the box which are adapted to extend across the same in a manner to stiften the box where the same has been folded.
In carrying out my objects I cut the box out of a single piece of material and score the same so that two sides are formed complete while the two ends are formed in halves. The sides and ends as well as the bottom are adapted to fold over on score lines so as to provide two oppositely facing corresponding portions oit the box which have oppositely facing. corresponding edges. These may be secured together in any desirable manner. Between the end portions I term flaps which are adapted to overlap the bottom when the box is opened, said Vflaps being also formed in halves and simultaneously secured together' with the ends.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, illustrating the application of my invention in one form- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box.
Figure 2 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1 with the box turned bottom side upward and the cover removed.
Figure 8 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fiom-e 2.
hgure f1 is a plan view et the box after the same has been collapsed.
nected together.
sciiai No. 452,669.
Figure 5 is an end view ot' the box shown in Figure Li.
Fig. G is a developed view of the box blank after the same has been scored and cut.
As best shown in Figure 1, my improved box comprises a body portion 10 which eonstets et tour sides 11., 12, 13 and 14 and a bottom 15 leaving the top ot this portion of the box open. A cover 1G is provided which is termed with sides 17 and 118 and is adapted to be placed over the edges of the sides 11, 12, 13, and 14 to form a closure for the body portion 10. rl`he entire box 10 and cover 1G thereon are held in place by means ot a cord or other suitable device 18 which passes partly through the sides 11 and 14 of the device and is adapted to be tied in a knot as clearly indicated in Figure 1. The side members 17 of the top 1G are provided with creases at 19 and 2O by means of which the sides of the top 1G may be collapsed to lie perfectly flat,
The exact construction of the body portion 10 oit my invention is most clearly shown in Figure 6. This entire member is out Jfrom a single piece et stock as indicated in Figure G with substantially no waste of material. The stock is scored in parallel lines 21, 22, 23 running across the she'et and at longitudinal lines 24. Q5, 26 and Q7 running at right angles to the first named lines. By means of these score marks the box is divided into its various elements forming the sides 13 and 12 and the bottom 15 each integral and con- The sides lil and 11 are formed in two pieces 2S and 29, which pieces 29 have narrow strips 30 formed along the edges thereotl by the score lines 26 and 27. Attached to the pieces 28 and 29 are flaps 31 and 32 which are cut out ot material between said portions 28 and Q9 and are severed `from each other and l'rom the bottom 15 on lines 323, 3ft, and 35. These flaps may be made with rounded ott corners 3G as clearly indicated in the drawings.
After the blank tor forming my improved box has been cut and scored as shown in Figure G, the same may be assembled as follows: Score mark 22, as may be noted in Figure 6, divides the bottom 15 into two sections 37 and 38. The box is folded over on line 22 so that the two halves of the same fall along the same plane as is indicated in Fig ores 5 and 4l. The stripe 30 which :we nttoohed to the side nieinl'iei's ond tiene 3l are then coated with `glue and are ben t ovei1 and glued 'to the edges of the dope 32 ond the Side members 2S so that the boi; has; the appearance indicated in lzligine 5. rlhe body portion l0 of my improved box is noiv coinpleted ud ready to be Shipped.
