yUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`PEARL M. HART, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GASOLIE-CUT-OFF-VALVE LOCKING DEVICE.
Applcatignfiled May 29, 1924. Serial No. 716,715.
To .all ilom it may concer/n.: l,
Be it known that :[,YPEARL' M. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gasoline-Cut-Olf- Valve Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to 'locking devices for gasoline cut-off valves for use on automobiles. I
An object of the invention resides in providing a cut-off valve in the gasoline `feed pipe to the carburetor of. an automobile 'the extension from the plug t-he same may be operated to cut having a rod extendingr axiallyfrom the valve plug to the instrument board of the vehicle, wherein ply of gasoline to the carburetor, and locked in cut ott relation .at the instrument board.
The invention further comprehends other objects and improvements'in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts, which are more particularlyl pointed out in the following description and claim directed to the preferred form of the invention, it heilig understood, however, that various changes may be made in the specific instruction and assemblage of parts Within the scope of the invention 'as described and claimed.
In the drawing application:
Figure 1 tion of the Ainvention boardand gasoline feed' pipe ofa suitable form of automobile.
Figure 2 is a sectional vieviT taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device, parts thereof being shown in elevation.
The gasoline feed pipe of'an automobile is indicated at 1, which connects the tank 2 forming a part of this spring S, which .plug 6 in liquid tight relation with the i is a view, showing the' applicav' to the instrument" containing a: supply of manner.
A cut-off valve indicated generally at 4 is interposed in the gasoline feed pipe, which as clearly indicated in, Figure 1 comprises a valve body 5 having a passage therethrough forthe gasoline and receiving in a 'transversely extending opening the tapered valve plug 6 for controlling the passage through the body. One end of the plug 6 has a reducedl extension 7 on which is mountedia-scoiled spring 8 having one end seated against a washer 9, and the other end against a pin 10 mounted in the end portion of the reduced extension 7. The washer 9 is keyed in any well known manner (not shown) to the reduced extension 7 and is provided with a plurality of radially eX- tended. struck-out portions 11 adapted to seat in notches '12 in the lvalve body for holding the valve plug in either closed or opened position, through the action of the also serves to' 'maintain the valve body he other end ofthe plug 6 is 'provided With a rod extension 13 of substantial length, which extends through an opening gasoline with the carburetor 3 in the usual and-well-known inthe instrument board 14 of the vehicle,
and is rotatably mounted in a suitable plate and movably connected to said instrument board, and indicated at 15. This plate is formed With an opening 16 in the central portion, and at diametrically opposite sides of which are formed slots 17, While the rear side of the plate is formed With an enlarged annular recess 18, surrounding the opening 16, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The outer end ot the rod 13 1s enlarged as indicated at19, and is recessed as indicated at 20 to receive a suitable form of key operated locking device 21, to be housed Within ing bolt 22, slidably mounted In the transverse bore-23 in the enlarged portion 1h9 o.f said rod. The portion 19 is formed wlth a reduced-cylindrical portion 24, Whichseats in the opening 16 in assembled relation, of the rod 1n the plate 14, and which is providedv with diametrically opposite projections 25, Whichare adapted tobe inserted through `the slots 17 in the plate, and to normally seat in the annular recess 18 of said plate, for preventing detachment of the recess 2O for operating the lockl the plug 6 from thel valve body in the assembled relation of the parts. In this assembled relation, the transversely slidable bolt 22 is adapted to be projected into one of the slots 17 for locking the valve in position to cut 0E the supply of gasoline to the carburetor, While at the same time withdrawal of the rod is prevented from the plate 15 by the projections 25. The outer end of the enlarged portion 19 of the rod is formed with a lateral projection 26 to form a handle, by Which the rod and valve plug 6 may be rotated for opening and closing the valve in controlling the gasoline feed. The key 27 for controlling the lock 21 is inserted in the lock through the-end thereof in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawing, and in the assembled relation of the parts, the handle 26 is arranged in spaced relation with respect to the instrument board 14, so that the same may be conveniently ing and closing the vi e.
From .the foregoing description, it will be clear that a relatively simple construction has been provided for locking tl1econtrolling valve for the gasoline feed to the carburetor of an automobile, which Vprovides a lock and operating handle on the instrument boardof the automobile, which is conveniently operable by the `driver for controlling said valve.
grasped for operation Vin open- W'hat l' claim is:
A locking device for cut olf valves p0- sitioned in the -gasoline feed pipe on a motor vehicle comprising a rod extension from the plug of said valve extending through the instrument board of the vehicle, a bearin plate lprovided on said instrument boar having an opening with an enlarged portion, said rod extension being provided With an enlarged portion rotatable in the opening of the plate and having a recess therein, a' lock disposed in the recess and including ay transversely movable bolt, projections provided on the enlarged portion 'of the rod extending laterally therefrom -at right angles to the bolt` of the lock, and adapted to be disposed in the enlarged portion of the opening, said opening providedWith notches adapted to be'engaged by the bolt for preventing rotation of the rod at which time the projections will prevent the longitudinal movement of the rod through the opening, whereby when the bolt is unlocked and moved out of the notches, the rod may be rotated to bring the projections in registry with thel notches to allow the longitudinal movement ofk the rod throiigh the opening for Withdrawal purposes or the 0 like, and a crank on the end of the rod.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
PEARL M. HART.
