To all 107mm it may. conccrm Be it'known that I, PHILIP D. Donnn'rv, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVorcester, in the county of Worcester and $tateof Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful- Shuttle-Ki ithdrawing Device, of which the followingisa specification.
This invention relates to 1 improved means for enabling aaweavertowithdraw a shuttle fronrthe'box of a loom and one object of the invention isto provide such a device whiclrcanbe actuated by a connection to the usual picking mechanism.
Another? object of the invention is to pro vide'a shuttle withdrawing device conven iently locatedto beop'e'rated by foot power so asto leave the weavers hands free to manipulate the shuttle.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a shuttle withdrawing device associated with the picking mechanism of loom andnormally in inoperative position but" movable through a slight angle to be effective to actuatethe picking-mechanism at the will of'the operator"- and independ ently of the loomi'drive.

Referring more particularly to the drawings it will be seen that I have provided a loom frame 10 having mounted on the lower end thereof a rocker shaft 11 to which is secured a picker foot 12. A picker stick 13 is pivotally connected to the foot 12 and as shown in the present instance passes through a slot 1iin the lay 15; The lay is provided with a box 16 which receives the shuttle S and is mounted on swords one of which'is indicated at 17. i
' Themechanism for giving motion to the picker stick 13 comprises a pic-king shaft 18 extending substantially parallel to the frame 10 and supported by bearings one of which is indicated at 19. Secured to the shaft 18 is a picking arm 20 the upper end of which is operatively connected to sweep she-1:21, the outer end of; said sweepstick being provided with a lug strap 22which passes outside the picxer stick 13 and is positioned vertically by meansof; holder 23. By means of mechanism-not shown the shaft 18' is given periodic oscillations'in a left hand direction asviewed inFig'. 1 the effect of which is to draw the picker stick 13 to the leftjto expelthe shuttle S from the box 16. A return spring 24 may be pro-- vided'to restore the picker sticlr to normal position. The matter thus far described is wellltnown in theart and forms no part of my present invention.
In carrying out my invention I extend the shaft 18 and pass the same through an auxiliary forward bearing having ahorizontal foot 31' which isadjustably secured to an upstanding brace 32 which is bolted to the cross girt 33by bolts 34:. The auxiliary bearing 30 has an offset forwardly extending horn 35 for a pnrposeto be described, As shown in 51 provide a sleeve 3b which is connected by means of a key 37 to the picking shaft 18 andheld against longitudinal movement on the shaft 18 by a set screw 38 which threaded into the sleeve and engages said shaft. A foot lever having; a treadle s0 is provided with abearing or hub 1-1 which is loosely mounted on the, sleeve 36 and is located be tween the set screw 38 and aflanpye 12 formed on the auxiliary bearing;- 30. In this way the foot lever is positioned with respect to the picker shaft and is free to be moved around the same as a center. A spring 43 1s lnterposed between the foot lever 39 and the horn 35 for the purpose of holding the foot lever in normally raised position.
As shown more particularly in Fig. 6 the sleeve36 is provided with a lag 44 and the hub 41 of the foot lever is provided with a boss 4-5 which is in alignment with the lug 44:. The parts are so proportioned and the action of the spring l3 is such that the boss is normally slightly spaced from the lug 44-. This construction is desirable inasmuch as lug 44 is splined on the picker shaft and moves therewith during the normal operation of the loom.
Under normal conditions the shaft 18, sleeve 36, and lug 44 will vibrate without contact with the boss 45 but when the loom stops and it is desirable to remove the shuttle for any reason the foot lever 39 will be depressed to assume the position shown in Fig. 2, the effect of which is to cause boss 4:5 to engage lug 44 and move the latter in a counter-clockwise direction causing the picker stick to eject the shuttle from the box. The foot lever is then released and the spring 18 serves to return the same and boss 45 to normal position and spring 24 will return the picker stick to its normal position carrying with it the lug 44:.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very simple means for ejecting a shuttle from'the box of a loom by operating upon the usual picking motion and that the operating parts when in normal position are spaced so as to avoid interference with the usual picking motion of the loom. It will furthermore be noted that the hub of the foot lever is confined in a convenient manner.
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed'but what I claim is:
1. In a loom having a shuttle box and a shuttle therein, apicker stick, loom actuated means to give said stick regular shuttle ejecting movements, and a manually operable device normally in inoperative position but movable to impart motion to said loom-actuated means to give the picker stick a shuttle ejecting movement.
2. In a loom having a shuttle box and a shuttle therein, a picker stick to eject the shuttle from the box, operating mechanism connected to the picker stick, a normally inoperative manually actuable device movable at the will of the operator to operative relationship with the operating mechanism to give the picker stick a shuttle ejecting movement. o
3. In a loom having a shuttle box and a shuttle therein, a picker stick to eject the shuttle from the box, a picker shaft, con-.
nections from the picker shaft to operate the picker stick, and a manually actuable device supported by the picking shaft, said device being normally in inoperative position and movable at the will of the operator to operative position to actuate the picker shaft and cause the picker stick to have a shuttle ejecting movement. I
4. In a loom having a shuttle box and a shuttle therein, a picker stick, a picker shaft, connections between the picker shaft and the picker stick to give said picker stick a shuttle ejecting movement, a member secured to the shaft and having a lug thereon, a manually operable lever loosely mounted with respect to the picker shaft and having a boss thereon in alignment with the lug, said boss being normally out of the path of the movement of said lug as thelatter moves with thepicker shaft, said boss being movable at the will of the operator into operative engagement with the lug to give said picker shaft and picker stick a shuttle ejecting movement. I
5. In a loom having a shuttle box'and a shuttle therein, a picker stick, a picker shaft, connections between the shaft and the picker stick to give the picker stick a shuttle ejecting movement when the picker shaft has an operative vibration, a sleeve secured to the shaft, a lug carried by the sleeve and movable therewith, a foot lever having a hub loosely mounted on the sleeve, a boss carried by the hub in substantial alignment with the lug, yielding means to hold said boss normally out of operative relationship with respect to the lug, said foot lever being depressible to cause engagement between the lug and the boss to give the picker stick shuttle ejecting movement.
6. In a loom having a shuttle box and a shuttle therein, apicker stick, a picker shaft, connections between the picker stick and the picker shaft to give said picker stick a shuttle ejecting movement when the picker shaft receives an operative vibration, a sleeve mounted on the picker shaft, means to secure thesleeve to the shaft including a radially extending member, a bearing for said shaft, afoot lever having a hub mounted loosely on said sleeve and positioned by the radially extending member and the bearing, and interengaging devices formed on the sleeve and hub normally. in inoperative position but movable at the will of the operator to give said sleeve and shaft an operative vibration.
