c. B. POPE COMBINED LAUNDRY IUB ANDAKITQHEN SI'NK Filed Feb. 19', '1925' x l'NvENTo I f5. l fil"p L ATToRNEY 4 l Patented Aug. Z5, 1925.
UNITED STATES CHARLES B. POPE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
f'j"j coMBrivnn LAUNDRY TUB AND KITCHEN sink.
Application filed February To all whom t may concern.'
Be it. known that I, CHARLns B. Porn, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements vin Combined Laundry Tubs and Kitchen Sinks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined kitchen sink and laundry tub, the invention having for an object to economize space in small apartments by constructing the sink to sit removablyv in the top of the laundry tub, so that normally the tub and sink occupy the one space, the sink being removed when it is desired to make use of the tub.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a perspective view showing my improved combination sink and laundry tub.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinalvertical sectional view thereof, this view being taken along the general plane indicated by the line 22 on Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4iis a detail horizontal sectional view taken on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view showing the member on the tub engaged by the outlet nipple on the sink.
ln the drawing the reference numeral 10 indicates a laundry tub which may be of the usual shape, with a sloping front side, and which rests on the usual feet and is provided with the usual drain outlet, not shown. lThe rear side of the tub is extended upward as at 11 above the top edge of the tub and is provided with the usual hot and colt water faucets indicated at 12.
The sink is shown at 15, being of the usual metal construction and shaped in the ordinary manner, being of a length to fit snugly in the top of the tub. At its top edge the sink is formed with an outwardly projected bead or flange 16 that rests upon the top edge of the tub and thereby supports the sink in position upon the tub. As will be apparent, the sink, when in posi- 19, 1925. Serial No. 10,168.
tion on the tub, is under 'the faucets 12 to be supplied with water therefrom. The' sink is provided with an outlet Vopening 18 in the bottom thereof which outlet opening I have preferably arranged to communicate with an outlet in the side of the tub, the-latter being of considerably greater depth than the sink. From the opening in the latter, lwhich is provided with the usual plate 19 with a `number of small apertures therein, a short elbow 20 leads downward, and has extending across its end, which may be slightly'inclined with respect to the verticalas shownin Fig. 3, a cross-piece 21 that acts as a cam to open the normally closed valve that controls the outlet opening provided in the wall of the ytub from the sink. a
This valve comprises a casing element formed to present a vertically extended seat 26 which is engaged by a valve disk 27 fixed on a horizontal stem 28 slidable in guide elements 29 and 30 in the casing, the element being in the form of a spider eX- tended vertically across the casing. An eX- pansion spring 32, coiled around the stem 28, `bears on the valve 27 and normally retains the same on its seat 26. On its inner face the tub is provided with a channeled retaining element 35, of U-form as seen in face view, in which is a gasket or packing, 36 and which receives a'flange or lip 37 on the end of the elbow 20 when the sink is in place in the tub.
When the sink is in place on the tub the cross-piece 21'on the end of the elbow bears on the stem 28 of the valve 27 and retains the latter in open position, the valve being closed by the spring 32 when the sink is removed. VVhen the sink is being placed in the tub the cross-piece 21 acts as a cam to open the valve.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows: f
1. A. kitchenV unit comprising a laundry tub, and a sink removably seated on said laundry tub, said sink being formed with an outlet opening in the bottom thereof, and said tub being formed with an outlet opening for the sink waste in the side thereof, and a conduit leading from the opening in the sink and detachably engaged with the opening in the tub, and a valve normally closing the'last named opening, and an element on said Conduit for retaining the said Valve open When the sink is in position on the tub.
2. A kitchen unit comprising a `laundry tub, and a sink reinoyablyseated on` said laundry tub, 'said sink being formed with an outlet opening in the bottom thereof, sind, said tulo being formed With an ontlet opening for-the sink Wasteiin the side thereof, and a conduitleading from the opening inthe sinkend detacha-bly engagedwith the. opening in the tub, and a vztlyenornrally closing the last namedv opening, and, it cam element on the said conduit adaptedto open the said valve When the sink is positionedl on the tulo.
` 8. A kitchen unit comprising `ai 4laundry tub, and a 'sink frernoyaloly seated ,on said laundry tuloysatidsink being formed With an outletl opening int the bottoni thereof, and said tub being formed With an outlet opening for the :Sink Waste in the side thereof, and a conduit leading -froni the opening in the sinlrand detachably engaged With the opening in'thehfnd a valve normally closing they last named opening, and a caln element on the said 'conduit adapted to open the said valve when the `sink is positioned on the, tub, the vsaid confdtiitlhzti'fing a projecting flangel onthe end thereoh'nrid a ychmne-led guide onfphe"tnlot partilly srirroundiiig lthe said' opening therein to receive the "sz'iid flange.
Ilntestiinony whereof I have affixed niy signature.
