Be it known that HERMAN L. GREVE, a citizen of United States, residing at 357 Macon St., Brooklyn, New York, has invented a new and useful Improvement in Mailing Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to mailing receptacles.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved receptacle and improved means for fastening the. fla-ps of a mailing re c-eptacle to the body portion thereof in such a manner as to eliminate a number of troublesome features inherent in fastening means for this purpose heretofore in use.

A further object is 'to provide a device of this character which will require a minimum of time to lock and unlock after the contents of the wrapper have been placed therein.

The locking means heretofore employed for the purpose of holdingr the flaps of the receptacle in locked position, extend above the plane surface of the flap and their edge portions present 'side abutments, due to the thickness of the material of which the locking element is made, and the embossing thereon, which oft-en extends above the surface of the flap a considerable distance.

The parts thus extending catch in other mail matter in transit which results in injury to such matter and also often nips the locking means loose from 'the wrapper.

To overcome this trouble I have provided a locking means, hereinafter referred to as a clip, which has but one part to bend in locking the wrapper, and which presents no abutment portion which can catch in other mail matter in transit.

Referring to the drawings which form a part of this specification,

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a mailing receptacle of rectangular form, and disclosing my improved clip thereon in locked engagement with the flap of the wrapper.

A, indicates the receptacle made of stiff paper stock. Al indicates the upper iap portion thereof, `and A2 the lower flap portion which overlies the body portion A, as illustrated in Figure 1.

The flap portions are provided with openings BB respectively located near the ends of the receptacle as shown, and preferably formed with circular edges B1, each flap having a rectangular shaped recess C-C respectively in whichthe shank portion D1 of the clip D rests when the clip is bent in locked relation with the wrapper as illustrated in Figures 1-3 and 4.

The wrapper is folded as shown in Figure 1, the end flap portions EnFi respectively, being first turned in as shown after the contents are placed in the wra per, then the upper flaps A'1` and A2 are foliled so as to overlap each other, crossing at the point F as indicated in dotted and full lines.

The clips D--D respectively are preferably made of thin copper having no spring quality, and are permanently fastened to the end flaps E by tangs G--G etc. as shown and rest below the openings B as shown in Figures 2 and 3, and the shank D1 is bent as the clip is forced into locked position as shown in Figures 1 and Ll, the shank portion D1 resting in the recessed portion G of the receptacle, thus preventing any relative shifting of 'the flap portions of the receptacle. The button shaped end of the clip is pressed to provide a dome shaped end the outer circular edge of which is shaped and rests in close contact with the surface of the flap as illustrated at II-in Figure 7 thus presenting no edge or abutment wall that will catch in other mail mat-ter in transit. It will also be observed that the shank portion is covered and protected by the side walls of the fiap portion.

In fastening large quantities of these receptacles, a considerable amount of time is saved over that required for other similar mailing receptacles and a package is provided that overcomes the troubles above set forth.

Having thus described my invention I claim as newl. A mailing receptacle comprising a flap portion having an opening with a recess formed in one side thereof; `a clip fastened to the receptacle and having a shank which.

fits and rests in said recess when the receptacle is locked, and also having a donie shaped end formed integral with said shank, 'the expose-d edge of which rests on the surface of said flap.

2. In a mailing receptacle, a hendahle clip having zi shank fastened to the reo-eptaole, and a closure Hup for the receptacle having un opening through which said clip may be lifted and bent for locking the flap closed, 'said opening having an oi''sei' recess to fit the shank when said clip is in its effective bent position.

3. In combination, a contain-er having a closure flap, a clip comprising means for securing the clip 'to the container and having a shank extending therefrom With a single rigid head formed integral therewith at the free end of said clip, the closure. Hap for said container having an opening provided With an oset recess adapted to it the shank, said shank being hendahle Within said recess so 'that 'said head overiies the securing means to lock the Hap.
