To all lwhom it my concern:
Be it known that I, Josma W. JONES, a citizen of the United States, and aV resident of Corning, county of Steuben, andState of 5 New York, have invented a certain Auto,- matic Speed Regulatonof which the following is aspecication, accompanied by drawgl'x'his invention relates to an automatic speed regulator particularly adapted for A regulating the speed of the driving engine of a compressor.
One object of the invention is to re ulate the speed of the engine, which may "e anv internal combustion engine, in accordance with the requirements for air, and for this purpose, the regulator is at all times, which begins to take effect or 2O act on the regulator,at a pre-determined pressure, so that the engine speed is reduced or increased as the demand for air decreases or increases.
The regulator preferably includes a centrifugal overnor for the driving engine, and anoter object ofthe invention is .to operatively connect the tiuid operated regl ulating device with thecentrifu'gally operated governor' in suchV manner that the action a0 of the centrifugally operated to counteract the action of ated device.
The .invention is shown in one of its prethe -uid operferred forms in the accompanying drawings,
which is a diagrammatic sideelevation of a portable combustion engine driven compressor unit, partly in section, suicient parts beingshown to illustrate the invention.
40 shownin connection with a portable compressor unit, inwhichthe compressor' A mounted on the frame B, having the wheels C, is driven by any suitable combustion eni gine D. The invention, however, is applicable to stationary as well as portable. units. The air receiver E for the compres sor, and the `'gasolene tank F for the combustion engine, may be mounted in anyA suit'- able manner on the frame. The main driving shaft of the combustion .engine D and the crank shaft G of the compressor, are coupled by any suitable coupling H.
The combustion engine is provided with preferably subject to the discharge pressure ofthe compressor,
governor tends for air,
a suitable centrifugal governor, mounted on the' counter shaft J, `suitably geared to the engine shaft K. The weighted governor arms L, in this instince, are pivoted on the spider O, and are a apte able lon the'counter shaftwhich in turn moves the lower end Q of the governor llever R outwardly about the pivotalv point S, as the governor arms iy outwardly with increased` speed of the en'ine.' The upper end of the lever lit issuitzibly connected by .means of the` rod T and other operative connections to be. described, to the throttle U of the combustion'engine, so that u on an increase of speed of the engine be on a pre-l determined degree, the throttle will automatically move towards closed position and the speed brought back to the desired point.
i. eans are provided for setting the governor whereby the speed of the engine may be limited to a pre-determined maximum, and 'l' in this instance, a compression sprin Vis held between the'cap W on the lever and the cap X on the endoi the adjusting set screw Y, which in turn is mounted'withina guide Z connected toa suitable bracket b on 30 the engine. frame. The tension of4 the governor spring V determines the maximum speedof the engine.
In accordance with `one featureof the invention, an automatic kregulating device is provided for controlling the speed of the engine in accordance with the requirements and this regulating device reduces the speed of.. the engine as the demand for airdecreases,by actuating the engine throt vtle U. eferring to the drawing, the invention is In vthe present instance and as a convenient form of regulating device adapted tovbe mounted on the combustion engine, a c linder a maybe secured to the same brac et b on'which the spring guide Z is mounted, and a Huid pressure connection, in the for'm' of a pipe c is connected between the 'said cylinder a and the air receiver Eef. the unit. A plunger din said cylinder a, is 1n 100 this instance Aunder substantially constant air pressure from the receiver, EA anda crank lever e pivotcd at f Vto the bracket Zr, has one arm bearing upon the plunger d, the other arm of said bell crank lever being pivotally connected at the point g to. a lm k .t0 bear 'against' the-plate P, slid'- y h which .is in turn connectedat the'point j to'fthe rod T,'connected4 to the upper end of ythe governor arm R. A lever k is ivotally connected at thepint o1 interme ate the.
length`ofthe link h and is also pivotally Iconnected tothe throttle U of theI engine.'
By this means, movement of thev governor i' arm R as heretofore described, willtransmit ymotion directly through the rod T, link l and lever. k to the throttle U..fo r directl controlling the speed of the engine throng the action of. the centriugalgovernonf f'zo A n adjustable stop p on the' bracket .b
`limits the rocking movement of the bell crank lever about its pivot f, due'to'the;
action of the plunger d in the air cylinderA a of the regulating device. A4 spring q is ada ted to -tie-compressed between,V one arm of t ebell crank lever e and an adjustable stop r also mounted in a' portion of the bracket b., The function of the adjustable spring g is to permit the Aregulating device 'to be ,set` for operation under a given discharge pressureoi the compressor.
In the operation of the device, as described, let'itbe assumed. that the demand for air decreases. so' that the speed of the engine should be reduced accordingly. The
v increased pressure built up in the air re- 'ceiver E,4 will-.force the plunger d outwardly in the cylinder'a, and rock the bell crank about its pivot f, whichk will move thepivotal connection g of the link h, in a. di-' `rectionv to actuate the throttle U towards Aclosed position. Under such circumstances, the pivotal point j of the link 71.I at the connection to the governor zrod T, will. remain substantially stationary and for'm the fulcrum about which the link h. isgmoved, in order to actuateA the throttle.
speed of the engine in accordance with the demand for air. As the demand for `air increases again, the pressure in the receiver' E will be reduced andthe bell crank e will `berocked under the influence of the spring 1 g to force the plunger d into the cylinder a, at the same time moving the throttle U A towards open' position for increasing the speed of the engine to meet the increased demand for air. Under the first condition vsgecifiedfand assuming that the speed oiv e engine has been reduced by the partial closing of thethrottle U. the governor arms L of4 the lCentrifugal governor,- will move to wards eachv other, thus permitting the governor ar'rnR to be rocked on its pivot S" vundczihe influence of the governor"springr ,VQ-and the governor rod Tjwill be moved in a direction to rock the linkl 71A 'abnit'the plvotal olnt 'q whichvin this instance remainssu stant'ially stationary, and the lever 7c connected to the throttle U will be moved in a direction tending to Vopen the throttle U so that the action of the centrifugal gov- Bv this'4 means, the regulating device contro s. the
ernor. tends to counteract the u .ctic'ni'of 'theY vfluid'A operated regulating device,
` Under the 'second condition specified and assuming that the speed of the engine has been vincreased again by the partial opening of the throttle U,'tl1e governor arms L of the centrifugal governor will move away from each other,A thus causing the governor arm R to, be rocked on lts pivot under the iniiuence of the increased centrifugal force of overnor arms L and the governor rod Tyw'i l be moved in a direction' either to travel too far when set in mo-V tion by a change of speed or of pressure.
will be moved in a.'direc1-' It insures uniform regulation of the speed in accordance with the demand for air.
