UNITED STATES JEAN ZVC ICKY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
PUMP.
Original application filed March 7, 1922, Serial No. 541,824. Divided and this application filed. May
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEAN .ZwIoKY, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, residing at 66 Chester- Road, South Tottenham, London, N. 15, England, have invent-ed new and useful Improvements in Pumps (for which 1 have filed application in England on the 17th May 1921, patent application No. 13, 868/1921), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, and more especially to hand-operated pumps that are required to withstand severe conditions of service with little attention.
The object of the invention is a pump equipped with operating means which do not impose lateral stress upon the piston, piston rod, or gland, but which includes adequately lubricated guiding surfaces for the moving parts.
To this end the invention comprises a guide for a cross-head upon the piston rod, together with a second guide substantially at right angles to the cross-head guide, and a handle pivoted on the cross-head and having its end moving in the second guide.
In a preferred and simple embodiment of the invention the second guide is integral with and projects at right angles from the cross-head guide and receives a pin carried in the forked end of the handle. The second guide is connected to the under slide surface of the first by a channel opposite a lubricator in the cross-head guide, which serves to supply lubricant to both guides.
A further object of the invention is to permit of wear of the gland packing being automatically taken up in known manner by the aid of a spring. To this end while the cross-head guide is made integral with the cover plate of the cylinder its construction is such as to allow access to the piston rod between the cover plate and guide where a gland spring is located; and an abutment for the spring is inserted and can be removed from the side.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is illustrated as applied to a pump of which other features are described in detail in my co-pending application Serial Num ber 541,824.
Figure 1 being a longitudinal section,
Figure 2 an end elevation, and
Figure 3 a detail of the gland abutment.
The pump proper comprises a cylinder 1 Serial No. 641,665.
with inlet and outlet passages 2 and 3, and a valve cavity 4 containing a valve spider 17 in which are valve seatings 18, 19, 20 and 21 and a filter 5, all as described in my copending application above mentioned. At one end the cylinder is closed by a simple cover plate 6 which may be equipped with a drain cock by which the cylinder may be emptied of liquid when it is necessary to open it. At the other end the cover plate 7 carries an extension 8 forming a guide for the cross-head of the pump. The gland at this end through which the piston rod 9 passes is kept tight in spite of wear by the pressure of the spring 10 upon its bush. Since the cross-head guide is integral with the cover plate the spring bears upon an abutment 4A which is inserted laterally. The form of this abutment is further seen in Figure 3. On the end of the piston rod is a cross-head or block 11 which slides in the guide 8 and to which is pivoted the handle 12, part only of which is shown. The lower end of this handle is forked as appears in Figure 2 and the ends of the fork are joined by a pin 13 having a sleeve upon it which slides in slots in the bracket 14. A lubricating device 15 supplies lubricant to the guide 8 and the block 11, and through the passage 45 in the block supplies the pivot of the handle 12. From the guide 8 oil passes through the channel 16 to the guide 14 and also to the pin 13.
What I claim is:
1. In a pump, the combination with. the piston rod of a cross-head thereon, a crosshead guide, a second guide at right-angles to the cross-head guide, and a handle pivoted on said cross-head and having its end sliding in said second guide.
2. In a pump, the combination with the cylinder, piston, and piston rod of a crosshead on the piston rod, a cover plate 011 the cylinder, a cross-head guide integral therewith, a second guide projecting at right angles from said cross-head guide, a forked handle embracing and pivoted on said crosshead, and a pin connecting the ends 01 the fork prongs and sliding in said second guide.
.3. In a pump, the combination with the cylinder, piston, and piston rod of a cross head on the piston rod, a cover plate on the cylinder, a cross-head guide integral therewith, a second guide projecting at right angles from said cross-head guide and having an oil channel connecting with the under slide surface thereof, a forked handle e1nbracing and pivoted on said cross-head, and a pin connecting the ends of the fork prongs and sliding in said second guide.
4. In a pump, the combination with the cylinder, piston, and piston rod, of a cover plate on the cylinder, a gland in said cover plate, an abutment embracing but removable laterally from said piston rod, a spring compressed between said gland and said abutment, and means upon said cover plate and not closely surrounding said piston rod for supporting said abutment against the spring 15 pressure,
5. In a pump, the combination with the cylinder, piston, and piston rod, of a crosshead upon the piston rod, a cover plate on the cylinder having a cross-head guide integral therewith but allowing access to the JEAN ZVVICKY,
