HERBERT E. MALZARD, 0F PORTLAND, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO THE THOMAS LAUGI-ILIN COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
. r I ADJUSTABLE COWL.
Application filed April 21, 1924. Serial No. 708,049.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. MALZARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Cowls, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements 111 adjustable cowls, and more especially to an improved adjustable ventilating cowl particularly adapted for vessels or ships.
The object of the invention is to prov de an improved adjustable cowl; to provide improved supporting and attaching means of a simple eflicient nature providing for the adjustment of the cowl capable of being quickly and easily adjusted and that will provide a firm, rigid connection and sup port. r
The invention, with other ob ects and ad vantages thereof, and the partlcular construction, combination and arrangement of parts comprising the same, w1 1l be understood from the following detailed descr ption, when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and illustrating one embodiment of the invention.
In the drawing: I
Figure 1 is a side elevation, with parts shown in section, of an adjustable cowl constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2is a detail perspective view of-the supporting and attaching plate.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamping member.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views respectlvely of the cover plate and wrench for the same.
The invention comprehends a supporting and attaching'member adapted to be secured to the'deck of a vessel or the like, in combination with a cowl adapted to seat on the supporting plate to be turned thereon, said supporting member having an opening therein and means thereon adapted to inter fit with an end portion of the cowl to maintain the same in centered relation with the opening of the supporting plate, and means for clamping the cowl to the supporting and attaching member providing for rotary ad'- justment of the COWl including a flange on lower the interior of the cowl, and a single clamping ring member adapted to be positioned interiorly of the cow], said clamping ring member having an outstanding flange to fit over the flange of the cowl and having a rotatable adjustable connection with the supporting member.
While a specific embodiment of the invention is illustrated'in the drawings, it will of course be understood that minor changes and variations in the particular construction shown, and the embodiment of the invention in other forms, as will appeal to those skilled in the art and falling within the scope of the appended. claims, may be practiced without departing from the spirit of the invention. i L
Referring to a detail description of the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the supporting and attaching member is shown as a plate 1 having a circular opening 2, and an adjoining tubular part 8, said plate being adapted to be secured by screws 1 or equivalent means to'the deck 5 ot a vessel or the like, as illustrated Figure 1 of the drawings,
at a ventilating opening therein with the tubular part 3 of the supporting member fitting within the openlng.
6 designates the cowl comprising a lower cylindrical part 6 and an enlarged upper part 6 having a mouth 6 disposed at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of the lower part (i the cowl being adapted to seat at its lower end upon the supporting and attaching member with its lower part 6 in alignment with the ventilating opening of the deck, and to be rotated or turned on the supporting and attaching plate 1 to adjust the same with its mouth 6 facing in'diflerent' directions as 'deslred.
The means for adjustably securing the an annular flange 6 on the interior of the part 6 of the cowl, and a ring memher 7 having a rotary adjustable connection with the supporting plate 1 and provided with an outstanding portion or flange 7 adapted to lit over the flange 6 of the cowl 6, said ring member 7 being adapted to securely clamp the lower end of the cowl 6 to the supporting plate 1. The rotary adjustable conn t n b twe n the ring member 7 and the supporting and attaching plate 1 is formed by an interiorly threaded portion 3 on the tubular part 3 of the supporting and attaching plate and an exteriorly threaded portion 7 on the ring member 7, the ring member 7 being adapted to be arranged interiorly of the cowl and the tubular part 3. 8 designates a radially extending bar on the ring member 7 rigid therewith for operating the same, the clamping ring member 7 being operable either from above the deck or from within the cabin. As will be understood to adjust the cowl the clamping ring member 7 is unscrewed sufficiently to release the cowl 6, which is turned to point its mouth in the desired direction, and the clamping ring member 7 is then turned up to lock the cowl in adjustable position,
Means is provided for maintaining the lower end of the cowl (3 on the supporting plate 1 in proper centered relation with the opening 2 thereof. The means for this purpose in the particular exempliflcation of the invention shown in the drawing, comprises an annular depression or recess 1 in the plate 1, surrounding the opening 2 of the plate, and a depending annular portion 9 on the flange 6 of the cowl (3 adapted to fit within the depression or recess 1 of the supporting and attaching plate 1, an interfitting connection being thus afforded, which also functions in conjunction with the clamping means to provide a rigid connection and support for the cowl.
l0 designates a cover plate adapted to be employed to close the ventilating opening in the deck when the cowl is not in use, said cover plate being adapted to fit within the annular depression or recess 1 of the supporting and attaching plate 1 and having an exteriorly threaded depending portion 10 adapted to engage the interiorly threaded portion 3* of the tubular extension 3 of the supporting and attaching plate. The cover plate 10 is shown provided with recesses 10 for engagement by a tool 11 for turning the same.
It will be noted that by the special construction and arrangement of parts hereinbefore described a very efficient adjustable cowl device is provided. The supporting and attaching means is of a simple nature that will aflord a firm rigid support and connection for the cowl and is capable of being quickly and easily adjusted. Only a single clamping member is required and the clamping means is arranged interiorly of the cowl and adapted to be readily adjustable either from the deck of the vessel or from Within the cabin.
