To all rich 0m it may con'cem:
Be a known that I, Jonn J. llama, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Mount Vernon, count of .Westchester, and i State of New.York, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Late-News- Printing Devices, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings forming a part of the same} V This inventicn relates to certain improve ments in late news printing devices. These late news printing devices are employed for printing additional matter, such as late news received afterthe make-up of fected by the usual printing couples. The
blank space left in the .web after. the main printing is generally, of small dimensions-as the amount of late news matter which would be printed is generally small. In printing this late news difficulty may be experienced in forwarding the web throu h the late news couple so that the unprinte portion of the web will accurately register with the late news mechanism. Furthermore, in the operation of these late news printing devices it is desirable that thev construction be such that the printing may be effected at every revolution of the form member or at alternate revolutions, depending on the place in the aper where the late news printing is to It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a construction by which the late new on every reio ution of the late news printer or on alternate revolutions Without tripping.
the form, cylinder or the impression member co-operating therewith where alternate printing is to be efi'ected during the prints ing operation, thus producing a simple struchis a further object of the present invention to provide means for ad usting the web so as to cause the un rinted portion thereof to pass "between the ate news printing couple with the unprinted portion of the rinting may be effected either web in correct longitudinal relation with the late news printer so that "the printingwill occur on the web in the correct place.
It is a further object of the invention 'to improve the general construction of this late news printer whereby the printing relation between the members of the late news rintng couple may be entirely stopped w en it s not desired to efiect the printing action. 7
It is a further object o the invention to produce aconstruction which can be readily on and simply associated with the other mechanisms of the printing machine. v f With these and other object'snot specifically referred to in View, the invention consists in certain novel parts combinations, and arrangements, which W111 befully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features then pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed. i
v V In these drawingsv Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away and partly in section of so much of a late news printer'as is necessary for an understanding of the invention.
Figure 2 is a partly broken away and partly sectional endview of part of the construction shown in Fig. 1 ooking in the direction of the arrow 2 of that figure.

Figure 5 is a side view, partly in section and partly broken away of one arrangement of the impression c linder and the impression blanket of the. ate news cou le.
Figure 6 is a view similar to'F 5 showin another arrangement of the b anket.
igure '7 is a detail sectional" view of a blanket securing device for the blanket shown in Fig. 5. n
Referring nowtothese drawings the invention has been illustrated as employed in printing late news on aweb which has been printed and perfected in the usual manner except for a space in the web which has been left blank for the reception of the late news. As shown there is diagrammatically indicated a pair of printing cylinders 1, 2,
this late news printer, in the particular construction illustrated, being mounted above the printing and perfecting couple in suitable frames 7, 8 of an convenient or desired construction. This late news printer may be varied somewhat in construction, but will include an impression cylinder 9 mounted in the side frames .7,.8, before referred to, and a'form cylinder 10 together with an appropriate inking mechanism therefor. In printing'wi'th these late news printing devices it is frequently desirable that the printing relation between the form and impression cylinders of 'the late news printer may be interruptedaso that no printing shall be effected on the--web, and in the best constructions "and in accordance with the invention these means will include connections whereby the impression cylinder may be moved out or tripped awa from the form cylinder, this construction obviating the necessity of moving the" form cylinder and its co-operating inking mechanism. While this tripping mechanism. ma be of any desired character, in the particu ar construction shown, the shaft 11 of the impression cylinder 9 is provided with reduced ends 12 mounted in roller bearings 13 loated within an eccentric sleeve 14 mounted in the side frame 7, before referred to, and the parts are held in position by a collar 14' secured to the sleeve in any suitable manner, as by set screws 15. The outer end of this sleeve is'formed with an arm 16 by which the sleeve can be rotated to trip the impression cylinder on and off an impression.
In the best constructions means are provided whereby the throw of the eccentric may be adjusted, and in the preferred construction these adjusting means are also utilized for rockingthe arm. In the particular construction shown there is provided a split arm 17 having members 18, 19, the member 18 being secured to the arm 16. These members are recessed, as indicated in dotted lines in Fi 1, and are connected by a threaded bolt 20, its; nuts 21 being provided for preventing rotation of the bolt. On the bolt is provided an adjusting nut 22, the lock nuts and the ad'usting nut being provided with holes 23 y which they may be turned through the medium of any suitable tool. By rotating this nut 22 parts of the arm are drawn toward and forced away' from each other thus rocking the arm and adjusting the impression contact between the form and impression cylinders, and this may be done while the cylinders are in printwith a. slot 28 adapted to take over a pin 29 I on the frame of the machine and to be locked to the frame by an operatin handle 30. When this handle is in looks position, as shown in Fig. 1, the parts form in effect a toggle,'and by operating the handle 27 the impression cylinder maybe tripped on impression as shown Fi 1. If it be desired to trip the cylinder off impression this may be done in the same way by an arm 31 on therock shaft"2 5, this arm having a slotted end 32 takin over a lower pin 33 fast on the frame. ith this construction, therefore, the impression cylinder may be moved to stop the printing contact and it is unnecessary to move'the form cylinder and its associated inking mechanism.
In order that the blank space left in the printed web and indicated by the letter B on Fig. 2, may come in correct position with respect with the late news printer, means are provided for adjusting the web path so as to properl position the blank space in the Web. In t e preferred construction as illustrated, these means act to lengthen or shorten the web path, and in the particular construction illustrated, there is provided a roll or pulley 35 over which the web passes on its way from the main printing mechanism to the late news printer. This adjusting roll may be mounted and operated in any suitable manner to shift theweb path so as to lengthen or shorten it between the main printing couple and the late news printer. In the particular construction illustrated, this roll is carried on a shaft 36 supported in the ends of a pair of arms 37 fast on a rock shaft 38 journaled in brackets 39 secured to the side frames of the machine. Also fast on this rock shaft behind the arm 37 is an operatingwarm 40., The lower end of this arm is provided with a threaded aperture to receive a clamp screw 41 by which the arm can be rocked, thus rocking the rock shaft 38 and projecting the roll 35 toward or away from the web, thus increasing or decreasing the length, of the web path between the main printing mechanism and the-late news printer. Means are provided for locking the arm 40 in its" collar 45 bearing against the si With this construction the web path may l d i d t d pd iti n by meanso'f a simpression surface "which is conveniently of the arm.
be very quickly and accurately adjusted, and this adjustment can be efl'ecte'd while the machine is running so that the 'rinting of the correct point.
the late newson the web will ta e place at The form member; of the late news printing couple and its associated inking mechanism are, in thebeSt constructions, mounted and arranged so'thattheycan bemoved as a unit across the width of theweb when 4 this printing maybe effected at any desiredpoint in ,the web widthwise thereof. In the particular construction shown, this formmember is a small "cylinder 46 slidably mounted on'a shaft 47' extendin across the -machine and mounted in thesi e frames 7,
8, before referred to," the cylinder being lockedto the shaft by means of set bolts 48,
this cylinder in the best 'constructions bein I ear 61 on a short shaft 62 carried in side capacitated ,to carry a plurality of sma plates 49, these plates being. held on the cylinder by springclampstO. (lo-operating with this cylinder is an inking mechanism including the inking rolls 51, a driven distributing cylinder 52,- a ductor roll 53, a fountain roll 54 workin 30 machine with the printing cylinder. p
These parts are driven in any suitable of the impression cylinder 9. This gear.58 is also in mesh with a gear 59on one end of the shaft 47 of the form cylinder 46 of the latenews couple. I The other end of this shaftcarries a gear 60 which meshes wlth a rames 63, Gtwhich are slidable. on rods 65,
