Description

LE ROY HICKS PUNCH Aug; 18, I925. 1,549,834
Filed Sept. 13. 1923 Patented Aug. 18, 1925s PATENT OFFICE.
LE ROY HICKS, OF LYON MOUNTAIN, NEW YORK.
PUNCH.
Application filed September 13, 1923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, LE ROY Hicks, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyon Mountain, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in a. Punch, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in punches, and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claim.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a punch for use in connection with a Water Leynor drill adapted for reaming the opening through said drill, and is characterized in having double points or working elements and a reduced stem portion, to
the end of more accurately and easily forming the opening in the drill and avoiding excessive heating of the stem of the punch while working.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a punch of thisrharacter having a beveled portion adapted to impress a countersink in the end of the drill shank.
The invention is disclosed by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view of the punch;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the pointed or working end thereof shown in section; and
Fig. 3 is an end view of the working end or point of the punch.
Referring to the construction in further detail, and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the different views shown, t represents the shank of the punch having a keyway 5 formed therein for securing the punch in the machine after the usual manner with tools of this type. The stem portion 6 of the punch extends for approximately two-thirds an three fourths the distance of the tool, and is of reduced diameter and slightly tapering towards the working end 13, as shown.
Serial No. 662,541.
That portion of the stem 6 which adjoins the shank 4 is beveled as at 7, and has; for its purpose to form a countersink in the end of the drill shank, and it may be stated here that the drill referred to is of the rock-drill type, and not for working on metal.
The point 18-, or starting end of the tool, is of suitable proportion and design for the work intended, and is formed by tapering the portion 12 as shown. This element constitutes the first punching point. The second punching point or reaming clearance for the punch is formed by the elements 9 and 11, and an appreciable shoulder 10 is formed where the portion 9 joins with the stem 6. Said portion 9 is the largest working diameter of the tool and serves to keep the entire length of the stem 6 from contacting with the sides of the opening through the drill, and thereby avoids heating the stem, which would otherwise occur through frictional contact, as will be understood.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of. parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and, therefore, I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A tool of the character described comprising a shank having a reduced stem of substantially uniform taper from end to end and terminating with a preliminary punching element at the small end, and a secondary punching element on the stem of greater diameter than the largest diameter of the stem, said secondary punching element being situated a short distance from said small end and gradually tapering down to the diameter of the preliminary punching element, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
LE ROY HICKS.
