GEORGE SANDIFER, 0F MOBERLY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR, BY M ESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM W. MATKIN, OF MOBERLY, MISSOURI.
GAR SEAL.
Application filed July 16, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen Samarium, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of Moberly, county of Randolph, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Seals, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to improvements 111 car seals and has for its primary-object a car seal which must be destroyed in order that it may be removed from the car.
A further object is to construct a car seal in which it is impossible to introduce any instrument whereby the locking mechanism may be manipulated and the seal opened.
This device is an improvement on Letters Patent No. 1,436,200 issued to me November 21, 1922. j
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with portions in section showing the manner of holding the locking pin in opened position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the locking pin in position; i
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3 with the sealingloop removed;
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the slide for holding the locking pin out of engagement and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the locking pin and tongue.
In the construction of my device I employ a sealing loop 7 the end 8 of which is designed to form the back of the housing. Adjacent the end 9 is an opening 10 which is designed to permit the portion 11 of the locking pin 12 to pass therethrough. The locking pin 12 has its end, 13 secured to a tongue 14, one end of which is secured to the back 8. The opposite end of the tongue is wider and is designed to be folded so as to form a passage way 15.
It will be noted from Fig. 4 that this passage way is closed on all sides, and the front and rear walls of the passage way are provided with openings 16 and 17 so as to permit the portion 11 of the locking pin to pass therethrough. The tongue is also provided with cars 18 which are designed to come in contact with the hack .8 and hold the Serial No. 651,785.
tongue in position. In constructing this tongue it is preferably so made as to be normally tensioned toward the back when attached thereto so that it will always remain in proper position. Secured to the back is a cover 19, which cover consists of a top, bottom, two sides and a front, and which is designed to be welded or otherwise immovably secured to the end 8 and when so secured forms a housing. Over the tongue 14 is placed a slide 20, this slide has a loop 21 formed on one end and is designed to be slipped over the end of the tongue having the passage way, and when in this position holds the lock pin out of em gagement with the openings 16 and 17. The slide 20 is also provided with an ex tension 22 which has a hook 23 formed on its end. This hook is designed to contact with the tongue, and be positioned below the passage way 15. The top of the cover 19 is provided with a slit 24 which is of sufficient size to permit the end 9 of the sealing loop 7 to be inserted therethrough. This slot is located in alinement with the passage way 15. The locking pin 12 is preferably formed of spring wire, although a flat strip of spring material may also be used, if found desirable.
My method of attaching the seal is as follows- After the sealing loop has been inserted through the proper portion of the car door to be sealed, the end 9 is inserted through the slot 24. By pushing downward on the loop, the end 9 enters the passage way 15 and passing therethrough comes in contact with the hook 23, continued downward movement or deeper insertion of the end 9 moves the slide 20 down on the tongue and past the end 11 of the locking pin 12, and permits the end 11 to enter the opening 17 in the tongue. A continued downward move next brings the opening 10 in the loop 7 in alinement with the opening 17 and permits the end 11 to pass therethrough and into the opening 16. The device is now securely locked and there is no way in which the end 11 can be sprung out of position because the opening 24 in the cover 19 is of such a size that it snugly fits the sealing loop. The passage way 15 is also of such size as to snugly fit the loop so that there is no way of bending the portion 11 by pulling on the sealing loop and cause it to become disengaged, and the only possible way to open the seal is either to shear the pin by pulling or by breaking the sealing loop. The pin ho vever is made of such a size that the sealr'ng loop will be destroyed before the pin will shear. The only other way to open the seal would be to tear off th cover and this would instantly show that the same has been tainpered with. It is my intention to spot weld the cover 19 in position because by using solder, it might be possible for the cover to be removed and replaced without discovery, but spot welding precluces any possibility of this being done.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A car seal comprising a sealing loop provided adjacent one end with an opening and at the opposite end with. an integrally formed rectangular housing having an opening in its top of suiticient size to permit the passage of the free ends of said loop, a tongue provided with a passageway in alinement with the opening in t 1e top secured in said housing, a locking pin having one end adapted to pass through said tongue secured to said tongue adjacent its lower end, a slide surrounding said tongue for normally holding said locking pin away from said tongue, and a hook integral with said slide and adapted for engagement with the sealing loop for moving said slide on said tongue whereby said locking pin is released and permitted to enter the perforation in the sealing loop.
2. A car seal comprising a rectangular housing having an elongated opening in its top, a sealing loop formed integral with the back of said housing and provided adjacent its fre end with an opening, a tongue having a passage way at its upper end secured within said housing, said passage way in alinement with the o Jening in the housa locking pin secured to said tongue and adapted to pass through said tongue and pass go way, slidable means carried by said L us for normally holding the locking pin in disengaged position, a hook integral with said slidable means and adapted to be contacted with by the tree end of the sealing loop when inserted through the opening and passage way for permitting the locking pin to pass through said tongue and opening in the sealing loop whereby the free end of the loop is held against removing within the housing.
3. The var seal of claim 1 in which the tongue is provided with ears for holding the same in operable position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
GEORGE SANDIFER.
