ROAD PAVING.

Be it known that EDWIN M. RABON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in ltload Paving, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a new construction in road or street paving.
The main object of this invention is to provide a metallic frame work for locking the adjacent layers of paving material to prevent the slipping of the upper section with `relationsto the lower section, due to the failure of a binding action between these layers of material.
More specifically, this invention embodies a metallic framework of galvanized wires or rods formed with spaced vertical off-set portions, the main frame work being embedded in the conventional base of said road, which is usually 4in the form of con- 1 crete and the vertical off-set portions being arranged to extend beyond the upper surface of this base for engagement in the upper coating usually of asphalt.
Other objects reside in the production of a cheap and durable structure which can be easily manufactured, and which will be sufficiently strong to perform the various functions for which it is intended, it being obvious that the portions that form the immediate binding sections between the layers of the roadway are four ply, and consequently of exceptional tensile strength.
Other objects and features of this invention will appear by reference to the accompanying specification and claims.

Referring now in detail, reference character A indicates the usual concrete base and over which the layer of asphalt B is spread. The usual gutter is shown at CMC together with the curbing D-D. The metallic frame work combining the concrete and asphalt is indicated by reference character The construction of @his framework, more clearly shown in Fig. 2, comprises equally spaced longitudinal wires F and similarly spaced transverse wires G'. The distance between these wires F and G is a matter of variation and can only be determined by the nature of the material in use and the subsequent application of the completed construction, it being obvious that where it is intended that the layers of conc-rete and asphalt are to be of unusual thickness, or where the subsequent stress and strain is abnormal as on inclines, `it will be necessary to utilize a heavier mesh construction.
The wires F and Gr at points adjacent their intersections are bent at right angles to extend vertically and parallel with yrelation to each other for a substantial distance as shown at f and g and are knotted or looped together at H to prevent relative movement. The particular form of loop or knot utilized at this point is to an extent immaterial, it being merely necessary that this loop or not be suiliciently substantial to produce permanent connections.
In use, when the road base is laid, the concrete forming same has embedded near its upper surface the mesh construction forming the substance of the present invention. This mesh construction is sutliciently near the surface to permit the vertical offset portion to extend a substantial distance beyond the upper surface. The asphalt which forms the surface of the roadway is then spread upon the concrete and the ottset portions hereinafter mentioned are embedded therein. By this arrangement, and as previously mentioned, the connecting elements between the base and the surface sections comprise a series of spaced four-ply elements, which are held in spaced relation during the manipulation necessary in constructions by the connecting portions which are embedded in the base. Any tendency of the layers comprising this roadway to slip, slide, or roll, is Aeliminated and also the cracking of the surface, is, to a large extent, prevented as this cracking is principally due to the movements of the layers. ln addition to the functions just mentioned, the use of this wire frame work provides a reinforcement of exceptional value and in repairing roadways, in which the present invention forms one of the elements, it will be possible by supplying new mesh sections to so `vconnect the patches to the main body so as to have a structure ofl substantially the samey strength and durability as the original concrete body.
Numerous changes in the details ofconstructions and arrangements of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and, scope of the invention, it being perfectly clear to those skilledin the` artA that the same results may be obtained by slight variation in the construction illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. A tie construction fory pavements com prising a series of intersecting strands, portions of said strands being bent at their points of intersection toA extend at right angles to the strand4 bodies to form loops, and'means for fastening` the adjacent'loop ends together.
2. A road construction including in combination a Concrete base7 a series or" spaced intersecting strands embedded in said base, bent to form interengaging loops, projecting beyond the surface ofsaid concrete, and a-layer of asphalt on said concrete coveringl said loop extensions.
3. A roadway construction including in combination a concrete base, a series of intersecting strands embedded in said base and bent to form with a plurality of spaced,`
interengaging vertical loop portions, said portions extending beyond the upper sur@L face. of said concrete base and an asphalt coating covering said loop portions.
1l. A roadway construction comprising a base, a plurality of` strands embedded in said base bent to form upstanding loops having engagement with each other above the base and a layer of asphalt on the base covering said loops.
