Be it known that I, PAUL Gr. Swans, a citizen of'the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of l-rllegheny and State of Fennsylvanimhave invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Trolley Conductors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to overhead trolley devices, such as frogs, cross-overs, switches, etc., and particularly to the means employed for securing trolley conductors to such devices.
One object of my invention is to provide an overhead trolley device and means for clamping trolley conductors thereto that shall be inexpensive to manufacture and which may be readily and quickly assembled.
Another object of my invention is to provide an overhead trolley device to which trolley conductors may be secured with a minimum amount of effort and from which they may be removed without completely separating the parts of the device.
My invention embodies a clamping member provided with trolley-conductor gripping portions at one end and a bearing portion at the other end adapted to co-operate with similar portions of an overhead trolley device, whereby trolley conductors may be readily clamped between the conductorgripping portions and be securely fastened in position.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, of my invention as applied to a trolley frog, the ends of the frog being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the portion of the trolley frog shown in Figure 1, without the clamping member;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the clamping member included in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the clamping member taken from the end on which the projecting portions adapted to grip the trolley conductors are located.
In order that my invention may be more fully understood, I have shown it as applied to a trolley-conductor frog or turn-out, having a body portion 1 provided with ribs or runners 2 for guiding trolley wheels. be attached. Depressions 5 are located in the top of the body member for receiving trolley conductors 6. On top of the body member 1, near :its central portion, are? located rough or threaded gripping portions *7 and 8 for gripping the trolley-conductors6. In order that the trolley conductors may be properly clamped to the body member, I provide aclamping member 9 having gripping portions 10 and 11 atone end that are adapted to bear against the trolley conductors 6, preferably at locations oppositethe roughened portions 7 and 8 of the body member. The other end of the clamping member 9 is provided with a projection or boss 12 that: is adapted to enter a recess or recessed boss 13 in the body member, and thereby locate the clamping member in position, and assist it in clamping the trolley conductors.
A single fastening device, such as a bolt or a screw-threaded stud 14 and a wing-nut 15,may be employed for securing the clam'p ing member in position and forcing it against the trolley conductors 6.
In assembling the device, the clamping member 9 is first loosely secured to the body member 1 by means of the screw threaded stud 14 and the wing-nut 15. After that, the trolley conductors 6 are placed in such position as to rest in the recesses 5 and the rough or screw-threaded gripping portions 7 and 8 of the body member 1. Then the wing-nut is tightened on the screwthreaded stud 14, and pressure is thereby brought to bear on the central portion ofthe clamping member 1. Inasmuch as the stud 14, at one end of the clamping member 9, fits into the recess 13 and bears against the body member 1, the gripping portions 10 and 11 at the other end of the clamping member will be forced against the trolley conductors 6 and securely hold them in position.
I desire it to be understood that, while I have shown and described a specific form of device, such form may be varied within considerable limits without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A conductor-supporting device comprising a body member having portions adapted to grip trolley conductorsand provided with a bearing portion, a clamping member having conductor-gripping portions at one e Provided. at its other nd? with a bearing portion adapted to co-operate with the bearing portion on the body memher, and fastening means passing through the central portion of the clamping member for securing it to the body member.
2. A conductor-supporting device comprising a body member having portions adapted to grip trolley conductors and provided with a recess, a clamping member having conductor-gripping portions at one end and provided, at its other end, with a pivoting stud adapted to fit into the recess in the body member, and fastening means passing through the central portion of the clamping member for securing it to the body member.
3. A conductorsupporting device comprising a body member having portions adapted to grip trolley conductors and provided with a recessed boss, a clamping memher having conductor-gripping portions at one end and provided, at its other end, with a pivot stud adapted to fit into the recess in said boss, and a bolt that passes through the central portion of the clamping member for securing it to the body member.
4. A conductor-supporting device comprising a body member having portions adapted to grip trolley conductors and provided with a bearing portion, a clamping member having conductor-gripping portions at one end and provided, at its other end, with a bearing portion adapted to co-operate with the bearing portion on the body memher, and a screw-threaded stud and nut located in the middle portion ofthe clamping member for securing it to the body member and thereby clamping the trolley conductors.
5. In a conductor-supporting device, the combination with a body member provided with grooves for trolley conductors, of a clamping member provided with a bearing portion at one end and with conductorgripping portions at its other end, and means located near the middle portion of the clamping member for fastening it to the body member and clamping the trolley conductors.
G. A clamping member for clamping trolley conductors to overhead devices comprising an elongated member provided with projections at one end for gripping the trolley conductors and with a bearing portion at its other end adapted to co-operate with a bearing portion on the overhead device and pivotally support the clamping member and having a hole near its middle portion through which fastening means may pass.
7. A clamping member for clamping trolley conductors to overhead devices comprising an elongated member provided with projections at one end for gripping the trolley conductors and with a projection at its other end adapted to enter a recess in the over head device and pivotally support the clamping member and having a single hole near its middle portion through which fastening means may pass.
