RECEPTACLE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL B. TODD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Madison and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to cuspidors wherein a well is arranged within ahous ing and means is provided whereby the well may be moved outwardly of the housing when desiring to use the same.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved cuspidor possessing sanitary features in that the same will remain covered at all times except at the short period of time required for actual use.
Another object is to provide a cuspidor which may be placed in any out of theway place, as under an article of furniture or such, and one having a well which may be readily removed and cleaned; yet possessing features whereby accidental discharge of the.
, contents will be eliminated.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings,

The housing B which may be formed of sheet metal finished in any desirable manner, comprises side walls 10 and 11,'rear wall 12 and top and bottom walls 13 and 14 respectively. The front of the housing B is open so as to permit of the well C to move into and out of the housing bythe operating means D. Feet 15 are provided on the housing B in order that the housing maybe secured in position at any desirable place for preventing accidental tipping of the same.

side walls 10 and 11 respectively, are adapted to bear against the top and bottom walls of the well G for permitting of easy movement of the well C and also prevent tipping of the well when ejected from the housing thereof for permitting of evendistribution of the contents of the well. These baffles 20 are provided in order to prevent splashing of the contents within the well as the well is being moved. The upper and lower ends. of these baffles 20 are bent at right angles as at 22 for securing the baffles in place, and for a purpose to be later set forth. An elongated opening 23 provided in the top wall 24 of the well G and at the forward portion thereof, has positioned therebeneath, a plurality of staggered deflecting plates 25 for preventing escapement of any of the contents within the well when being moved. A container 26 for holding a diSin-Q fectant which is positioned beneath one; of the plates 25 is provided with a wick 27 for allowing the disinfectant to enter the well C. If desired, any other suitable means such as a valve or pump may be employed of allowing the disinfectant to enter the well. A removable cover portion 28, which is provided for permitting of the cleaning of the well, may be securely held in place by wing nuts or the like 29 which screw into the upper right angular flange 22 of one of the baffle plates 20. The front plate of the well may have depressions 30 formed therein for providing a means for handling the well when removed from the housing B. A roller 30 may be secured to the lower rear corner of the well C intermediate the rollers 16 and 17 for supporting the rear end of the well.
The operating means D for ejecting and retracting the well C comprises a bell crank lever 32 provided with stub shaft 33 pivotally mounted in the lower portion of the end wall 11. This stub shaft 33 extends through the end wall 11 and has secured to the outer end thereof, as by a pin or the like, an operating lever 34; the free end of which extends forwardly past the front wall of the receptacle A. A stop pin 35 may also be provided in order to limit the movement of the operating means when the well C is being ejected from the housing B. The free end of the arm 36 of the bell crank lever 32, has pivotally connected thereto a link 37 which extends forwardly and has its forward end pivotally and detachably connected to the end wall 38 of the well C at a point approximately near the forward edge thereof. The forward end of the link 37 may be pivotally connected to the well C as y a trunnion 39 carried by the end wall 38, and held against displacement by a cotter pin or the like 40. It will be noted that when the well C is ejected from the housing B, that the well may be readily and conveniently disconnected from the link 37, as the connecting means will now be clear of the housing B. A coil spring 41, one end of which is secured to the free end of the arm 36 and the other nd to the housing B, serves as a means for "etracting the well C when the operating ever 34 is released.
The buffer means E comprises a cylinder 42 being open at one end and provided at its opposite end with an arm 43 adapted for pivotal connection with a pin 44: carried by the end wall 11. A plunger 45, movable in the cylinder 42, has its outer end pivotally connected to the free end of the arm 26 of the bell crank lever 32. An adjustable air escapement screw 4'? is provided in the cylinder 42 at the closed end thereof for permitting of the regulating of the operating means D. It can therefore be seen that by so providing the buffer means E, the well C will not jar when being returned to a retarded position which would result in a possible spilling of the contents of the well.
It will be noted from observing Figure 1 of the drawings, that all of the operating means except the operating lever 34 is positioned inwardly of the housing B and therefore provides a neat appearing outer surface for the receptacle.
lVhile the device described has been limited to cuspidor of novel construction, it is to be understood that by a slight alteration of the well, the receptacle will be found to be equally well enicient for use such as a receptacle for garbage, refuse, shoe shining materials and also used in stores for holding various commodities.
As the receptacle is not limited to use when placed upon the floor, the operating lever 34 may vary slightly in construction in order to permit of the operation of the well by grasping the lever with the hand.
Various changes in detail may be made without ceparting from the spirit or scope of my invention; but,
I claim:
1. The combination with a housing and a well arranged for sliding movement in said housing, of operating means for the well comprising means for ejecting and retracting the well with respect to the housing, and means associated with the housing and well for retarding quick movement of the well to a retracted position throughout the entire inward movement of the well.
2. The combination with a housing and a well arranged in said housing, of means for ejecting the well from said housing comprising a lever pivotally connected to said housing, a link pivotally connected at one end to the arm of said lever and having its other end pivotally connected to said well and means connected to said lever for imparting movement thereto; means for retracting the well to a position within said housing and means associated with the housing and well for retarding quick movement of the well to a retracted position.
3. The combination with a housing and a well arranged in said housing, of means for ejecting the well from said housing comprising a bell crank lever pivotally connected to said housing, a link pivotally connected one end to one arm of said bell crank lever and having its other end pivotally course-cl to said well and means connected to said bell crank lever for imparting movement thereto; means for retracting the well to a posi tion within said housing, and means associated with the other arm of said bell crank lever for retarding quick movement of the well to a retracted position.
4. The combination with a housing and a well arranged in said housing, of means for ejecting the well from said housing comprising a bell crank lever positioned inwardly of one end wall of the housing and having its pivotal shaft extending outwardly through the end wall, a link pivotally connected at one end to one arm of said bell crank lever and having its forward end H pivotally and detachably connected to an end wall of said well at a point near the forward edge thereof, and an operating lever secured to the outer end of the pivotal shaft of said bell crank lever for imparting movement thereto; a coil spring having one end connected to the above mentioned arm and having its other end connected to said housing for retracting the well to a closed position, and means associated with the other arm of said bell crank lever for retarding quick movement of the well to a retracted position.
5. The combination With a housing and a well arranged in said housing of means for ejecting the well from said housing comprising a bell crank lever pivotally connected to said housing, a link pivotally connected at one end to one arm of said bell crank lever and having its other end pivotally connected to said well and means connected to said bell crank lever for imparting movement thereto; means for retracting the well to a position within said housing and buffer means for the well comprising a cylinder being open at one end and provided at its closed end with an adjustable air escapement screw, said cylinder to be pivotally connected at its closed end to an end wall of said housing,
and a plunger pivotally connected to the other arm of said bell crank lever and operable in the cylinder for retarding quick movement of the well to a retarded position.
6. In a receptacle, the combination with a housing, of a well provided With an elongated opening in the forward portion of the top wall thereof, arranged in said housing and provided with a plurality of transversely extending intercommunicating baffle plates, staggered deflecting plates positioned beneath the opening in said well, and a removable cover portion rearwardly of said elongated opening, means for ejecting and retracting the well with respect to the housing whereby when said well is in an ejected position, the opening will be disposed free of the housing and said cover portion will be concealed beneath the top wall of the housing, and means operable upon the well for retarding quick movement of the Well to a retracted position.
