MATCH HOLDER AND DISPENSER.

Application filed November 21, 1924. Serial No. 751,334.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK J. HEKRDLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Davidson, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match Holders and Dispensers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a match holder and dispenser, the general object of the invention being to provide means for holding a supply of matches and for drawing a small quantity from the holder by means of a manually operated part.

Another object of the invention is to provide means for facilitating the placing of the matches in the holder.

This invention also consistsin certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, i1- lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and'in which Figure 1 is a front view of the invention.

In these views 1 indicates a supporting base which may be provided with the bracket 2 so that it may be secured to a wall or other support. 3 indicates a casing which is seated upon the base and which has a portion 4 of its front and its top 5 removable so that access can be had to he interior of the casing. The part 4 carries a window 6. The lower part 7 of the front is provided with an opening 8. the upper part of which is covered by a strip 9 of resilient material and a chute 10 passes through the opening with its front end extending beyond the front part 7 and its rear end being connected with the rear of the casing. The side walls of that part of the chute within the casing flare outwardly at their upper edges, as shown at 11. The bottom of the chute within the casing is slotted, as at 12, and a lever 13 is slidably mounted below the chute with one end extending through the part 7 where it is provided wth a finger part 13'. A cross bar 14 is arranged in the chute and is connected with the rear end of the lever, this bar acting to force matches through the opening and along the bottom of the chute when the lever is pulled outwardly. A spring actuated lever 15 is pivotally arranged in the bottom of the casing and has one end engaging a slot in the member so as to hold this member and the bar in retracted position. A plate 16 is hinged at one end to a slide 17 which has a part engaging two flanges 18 formed at the sides of a slot 19 in one side of the casing. A knob 20 is bolted to the clip in such a manner that by turning the knob in one direction the clip can be loosened so that it can be adjusted along the slot and then by turning the knob in the other direction the clip will be held against movement. Thus the plate 16 can be adjusted so that it will assume an inclined position in the casing to direct the matches therein into the chute or it can be adjusted so as to assume a horizontal position so as to provide a rest for the matches being placed in the casing. The plate is provided with a flange 16' at its rear side edge and I provide a tray 21 having a handle 22 thereon for facilitating the placing of the matches on the plate.

In filling the device the cover of the match box is removed and the tray placed over the top thereof. Then the parts are reversed so that the matches will rest upon the tray.

Then the tray with the box thereon is placed on top of the plate 16. which placed in a horizontal position, and then the tray is withdrawn. The match box canthcn be lifted off which will leave the matches resting upon the plate 16. Another box canthen be emptied into the casing by means of a tray and'so on until the casing is full. The front and top are then put in place and then the plate 16 is moved so that it will assume an inclined position and thus direct the matches into the chute. By manipulating the lever 13 some of th matches can be drawn from the chute. the flexible strip 9 acting to limit the number of matches drawn from the device at one time and by making this strip of different sizes the number of matches drawn from the device can be regulated.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

A hinged cover 10 may be provided for the chute 10 to protect the contents of the device.

What I claim is l. A match holder of the class described comprising a casing having a chute in its lower part, a slide for drawing a number of articles from the chute, an adjustable plate Within the casing. which when in inclined position acts to direct the articles into the chute and when in horizontal position acts as a support for the articles being placed in the casing and means for adjusting said member.

A match holder of the class described comprising a casing having a chute in its lower part, a slide for drawing a number of articles from th chute, an adjustable plate within the casing, which, when in inclined position, acts to direct the articles into the chute and when in horizontal position acts as a support for the articles being placed in the casing, means for adjustiin said member, such means consisting of a slide to which the member is hinged and a knob screwed to the slide and working in a slot in the casing.

A match box of the class described comprising a casing. a chute at the lower end thereof, a slide member for drawing the articles from the chute, a spring for holding the member in its retracted position, said casing having a slot at one side thereof, a clip having a part sliding in the slot, a knob on the clip, a plate hinged to the clip and adapted to assume an inclined position in the casing for directing the matches into the chute or a horizontal position for holding the matches out of the chute and a tray for permitting match boxes to be emptied on to the plate.
