To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS RIPPEN- new, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in containers in which goods may be shipped and has particular reference to containers comprising two recessed members to contain the goods, one of which members may be mounted upon the other for display of the goods. My invention embodies improvements in the class of display containers set forth in my application filed Nov. 17, 1921, Serial No. 515,789.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide two recessed members adapted, when assembled together, to contain goods for shipment, one of the members having a recessed portion provided with score lines so located that said portion may be folded flatwise for shipment after it has been set up for use, and may be readily reshaped to contain goods by merely expanding the parts.
Another object of my invention is to provide one of the main members with means to retain the other main member when the last named member is placed upon the first named member in position to display the goods.
Other objects of my invention will appear from the description of the drawings, and my invention comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.

Two main members of the display container are indicated, generally, at A and B. The member A comprises a base member to support the member B when said members are assembled for displaying goods, (Fi 3). The member A comprises two recessed portions A and A adapted to receive the member B when said members are assembled together to contain goods and for shipment with goods therein, (Fig. 4). The blank shown in Fig. 5 is provided with spaced parallel score lines 1, 2, 3, providing walls 4, 5, 6, and said blank is provided with spaced parallel score lines 7 8, at the ends of wall 4 providing flaps 9 at opposite ends of wall 4 which flaps have tongues 10 provided by cutting away the blank at 11. The blank also has spaced score lines 12, 13, at the ends of wall 6 and in line with the lines 7, 8, wall 6 having flaps 14 at its ends. When theportion of the blank described is to be set up it may be folded along the score lines 2, 3, to place the walls 4, 6, parallel to and spaced from one another with the wall 5 interposed at right angles to the walls 4, 6, the flaps 9 are folded toward said walls 4, 6, along the score lines 7, 8, at right angles to the wall 4, and the flaps at 14 will fold along score lines 12, 13, and parallel to the flaps 9 being preferably glued to the inner surfaces of the latter with the tongues 10 extending for a modificabeyond the walls. It will be noted that the flaps 14 are shown shorter than the width of flaps 9. When the flaps 9 and 14; at each end of the recessed portions A are secured together, as illustrated in Fig. 2, they provide a pair. of primary opposing walls parallel to one another, and the walls A, 6, provide a pair of secondary opposing walls parallel to one another and attached to the primary walls at corresponding ends, and the wall 5 provides a fifth wall at right angles to all of the said opposing walls and joining the secondary opposing walls together at corresponding edges, said fifth wall lying between corresponding ends of the primary opposing walls. The wall 5 is provided with spaced slots 15 adapted to re ceive the tongues 10, which are shown extending over wall 5 at one part and tucked into the slots 15 for retaining the parts together. In order to fold the recessed member A in a flat-wise condition (Fig. 3 I provide the flaps 9 and corresponding tongues 10 .with score lines 16 extending lengthwise thereof, and I provide the wall 5 with a scoreline 17 extendinglengthwise thereof,said score lines all being in substantially the same plane when the parts are set up, as in Figs. 1 and 2,. whereby when the tongues 10 are not in the slots 15 the walls 4, 6, may be pressed together, and the wall 5 will fold on the score line 17 while the primary opposing walls and their tongues 10 will fold outwardly on the score lines 16,a-s illustrated in Fig. 3 The construction described enables the recessed por t-ion A of member A to befolded fiatwise while the forward or platform portion A may be left unfolded, as shown in the blank of Fig. 5, for transportation in a knockdown condition.
The forward portion A provides a platform to support the member 13, the two portions A and A being hinged together along the score line 1. The blank is scored transversely at 18 parallel to and at a suitable distance from the scoreline 1 to provide a platform wall 19, and said blank is scored at 20 parallel to and spaced from score line 18 providing an end wall 21 and a flap 22. The blanlr is also scored lengthwise; at 23, 24, inspaced relation in line with the score lines 7 8, providing sides 25, the edges 25 of which sides are oblique to the score lines 23, 24% to provide supporting edges forthe platform score line 18 at the outer end of wall 19, the wall 21 is rested against the tabs 27 and flap 22 is folded over said tabs, the lip 22 on flap 22 being then retained by a slot or opening 29 provided at the end of wall 19. The blanks of the base member A may be shipped with the parts for the recessed portion A assembled and folded along score lines 16, 17, as before described, with the remainder of the blank flat and unassembled, ready to be set up by the user. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the platform portion of the blank may be assembled and secured together and then folded flat for shipping. In this construction the flap 22 is omitted and the sides 25 are provided with score lines 25 which are oblique to the score line 18 and may bisect the angles between the score lines 28, 2a, and the score line 18. l Vhen such portion of the base member is to be made the sides 25 may befolded flat against the wall 19 and said sides again foldedon the oblique score lines 25 leaving thetabs 27 projecting laterally, and then the wall 21 may be folded along the score line 18 over the corresponding portions 25 of the sides 25, the tabs 27 next being folded over the outside of the corresponding ends of wall 21 and glued thereto. The member then will be in a flat or knock-down condition at the platform portion ready for shipping with the portion A also in knock-down condition, as before described. In the modi fication shown in F 5, flap 22 is provided with a lip 22 whichis engaged by a tongue 29 corresponding in function to slot 29 in Fig. 5. ,A cross-section view of the aforesaid parts in set up condition is shown in Fig. 5.
In the modification of the recessed portion A, shown in Figs. 8, 9, and 10, instead of having the parts 10 adapted to lie over wall 5 and enter the slits 15, said parts are shown in the form of flaps at 10 adapted to fold within the portion A against the wall 5, and in order to retain said flaps 10- the same are shown provided with lips 1O adapted to enter slit 4? in wall 4, as indi cated in Fig. 8. Instead of gluing the flaps 14-. to the inner surfaces of the walls 9, as before described, said flaps in Fig. 8 are secured to the outer surfaces of the walls 9. In a flat condition the flaps 10 are folded with and rest on the insides of walls 9.
The display member may be made from the blank shown in Figs. 6 and 7,cut and scored as follows :Transverse scoringSO, 31 and longitudinally spaced scoring at 32, 33, provide the main wall 34;. Beyond scoring 31 is a flap 35. At the sides of scoring 32, 33 are sides 36, and 37 indicates perforations in the side walls extending in series in a straight line to provide panels 38 adapted to swing on the lines 37, and remain outwardly disposed, or to be torn off at the discretion of the user along the perforations. The sides have scoring at 39 providing tabs 40 and the blank is out out at 41 providing a base wall 42 beyond score line 30. In Fig. 6 the base wall 42 is shown provided with oblique score lines 43 extending from score line to the outer edge of base wall 42. To make the member B according to the plan of Fig. 6 the marginal portions 44 of base wall 42 are folded on the score lines 43 against the main part of said wall. The sides 3 are then folded along the score lines 32. 33 over wall 34 so that their tabs over lie the marginal portions 44 to which they are glued. In the form shown in Fig. 7 the member B may be made by fold ng the sides 36 flat against the wall 34, and said sides again folded on the oblique score lines 36, leaving the tabs 40 projecting laterally, and then the wall 42 may be folded along the score line 30 over the corresponding portions 36" of the sides 36, the tabs 40 being folded over the outside of the corresponding ends of the wall 42 and glued thereto.
When the member B is to be used it is opened out, as shown in Fig. 3, with the main wall 34 and base wall 42 substantially at a right angle and the sides 36 at right angles to walls 34 and 42 and the goods may be placed therein, the end wall 35 being closed against the goods. The charged member B then may be inserted in member A, as indicated in Fig. 4, ready for storage and shipment of the goods.
When the container is to be used for displaying the goods the platform member A is lifted up from the member B and the entire member A is removed end-wise from member B and then rested upon a support, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, with its edges 25* of the platform member A and the edges 9 of the recessed portion A resting upon the support. The member B with the goods therein may then be rested on the platform member so that the base wall 42 will be upon platform wall 19, as indicated in Fig. 3, the wall 34 then resting against the member 14. To retain the member B in upright position upon platform member A I pro vide cooperative means between said mc1nhers. In the example illustrated the platform wall 19 is provided with an opening, indicated at 45, an edge of which opening at 45, (Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5), is provided with a projection shown in tongue-like form adapted to engage the adjacent front edge of the base 42 of member B, which will serve to keep the member B from sliding forwardly along wall 19 and from tipping over back wardly with respect to member A. The weight of member B with its goods resting upon platform wall. 19 will have the effect to depress the inner portion of said wall sufficiently to enable the tongue-like portion 45 to properly engage with the base of member B. In order to prevent the depression of the inner portion of platform wall 19, under the weight of the goods in member B, from unduly depressing the forward portion 19 of said wall and hence depressing the forward edge portion of the opening 45, I provide score lines at 46 in said wall extending from opening 45 toward score line 18, which will enable the portion 19 of wall 19 to remain substantially unbent for engagement of the corresponding edge of opening 45 with the base of member B. The tonguelike portion 45 is particularly useful when the package of goods in member B extends the full width of said member, but where there are several rows of packages side by side in member B the weight of the intermediate or centrally located packages would be liable to be such as to prevent a tonguelike edge of opening 45 from overlapping the base 42, hence the corresponding forward edge of opening 45 may be left straight, as indicated in Fig. I, to abut the edge of base 42 when the weight of the goods depresses the inner portion of wall 19. 7 Having now described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A display container comprising two main members, an inner main member being adapted to receive goods and an outer main member being adapted to receive the goods member, the outer member having two recessed sections both having end walls and side walls, said side walls being pro vided with lower edges oblique to said end walls. said lower edges constituting means for the said recessed sections to rest on a support, one of said sections having a platform wall, and means to detachably retain the inner member resting upon said platform wall.
2. A display container comprising two main members, an inner main member being adapted to receive goods and an outer main member being adapted to receive the goods member, the outer member having two recessed sections both having end walls and side walls, said side walls being provided with lower edges oblique to said end walls, said lower edges constituting means for the said recessed sections to rest on a support, one of said sections having a platform wall, said platform wall having an opening provided with an edge portion adapted to cooperate with the inner main member to detachably retain said member on the platform wall.
3. A display container comprising two main members, an inner main member being adapted to receive goods and an outer L side walls, said side walls being provided v with lower edges oblique to said end walls, said lower edges constituting means for the said recessed sections to rest on a support, one of said sections having a platform wall, said platform wall having an opening provided with a projection to engage a corresponding portion of the inner main memher to detachably retain said member on said platform wall.
4. A display container comprising two main members, an inner main member being adapted to receive goods and an outer main member being adapted to receive the goods member, the outer member having two recessed sections both having means for resting upon a support, one of said sections having a platform wall, said platform wall having an opening and having score lines extending from said opening toward the outer end of said wall, the edge of said opening adjacent to said score lines being adapted to cooperate with a correspondingportion of the inner main memher to detachably retain the latter upon said platform wall.
5. A container comprising a pair of primary opposing walls substantially parallel to one another, a pair of secondary opposing walls substantially parallel to one another and attached to the primary walls at corresponding ends, and a fifth wall substantially at right angles to all of said opposing walls and joining the secondary opposing walls together at corresponding edges, said fifth wall being located between corresponding ends of the primary opposing walls, the last named walls and the fifth wall having median score lines substantially bisecting them, the said score lines all lying in substantially the same plane, the primary opposing walls having tongues extending therefrom at the ends adjacent to the fifth wall, the tongues having median score lines, said fifth wall having slots adapted to receive said tongues.
6. A container comprising two main members, an inner main member being adapted to receive goods and an outer main memher being adapted to receive the goods member, the outer member comprising two recessed sections hinged to one another and having means for resting upon a support with one section rearward of the other, the said other section having a platform wall, the rearward section having a pair of primary opposing walls substantially parallel to one another, a pair of secondary opposing walls substantially parallel to one another and attached to the primary walls at correspondingends, and a fifth wall at substantially right angles to all of said opposingwalls and joining the secondary opposing walls together at corresponding edges, said fifth wall being located between corresponding ends of the primary opposwalls, both of the last named walls and the fifth wall having median score lines substantially bisecting them, the said score lines all lying in substantially the same plane, and means to retain said walls in spaced relation, the platform wall being provided with an opening having an edge adapted to cooperate with the inner main member to retain the latter on the platform.
