Be it known that l, @Hannes E. BnoMAN, a citizen ot the United tates et America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county ot lient and State ot lt/iliohigan, have inventer certain new and useful Improvements in Light Brackets; and do hereby declare the following to be tull, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
ylhis invention relates to improvements in light brackets and more particularly to swinging brackets 'for electric lights and its object is to provide a device of this character which will be extremely simple in construction, easy to manufacture and assemble and attractive in appearance. The device is provided with various novel features ot construction and arrangen'ient as hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

1 represents a swinging' arm made ot tubing which is preferably square in cross section, although round or other shaped tubing may be used. The outer end ot the arm which is broken away in the drawing supports an electric light, the electric conducting wires 2 for which extend through the tube. At the other end of the tube inverted cup-like member i is attached, one side ot the member being split and 'the parts 5 being turned outward to permit the tube to pass inside of the cup. The tube is fastened to the cup by brazi-ng or welding it thereto and the inner end ot the tube extends beyond the center of the cup l and is pierced Yfor the passage or" the pivot screw 6. rThe sides ot the tube are turned outward at 7 to form a rounded surface which is engaged by the wires 2 so that the insulation on the wire will not be cut or worn. The main body7 portion 8 of the bracket by which the device is attached to a wall or other object is formed ot' sheet metal having two vertical flanges 9 which engage the wall, and between the flanges 9 the inet-al extends outward at right angles forming the side walls 10 which are joined by the front portion 11. rlhe top of the front portion 11 and also the forward top edges ot the sides 10 are lower than the tops ci the iianges 9 a distance equal to the depth of the cup 4L and a semi-circular flange 13 formed integral with the front member extends out ward horizontally therefrom serving as a support for the lower edge of the cup. The said lower edge of the cup also bears against the top forward edges of the sides 10. in ear 14 taken from the metal of the flange 13 and integral with the front inember 11 is turned rearwardly and provided with a threaded hole into which is screwed the lower end of the pivot screw 6.
The friction member 15 of the structure, which comprises the friction top 16, the back 17 and the bottom 18 is formed of a single piece of sheet metal, the top being substantially circular and of approximately the same size as the top of the cup L1. The back and bottom portions are ot the right width to lit between the sides 10 and the ears 19 provided at each side of the top near the rear tit into notches 2O out into the top edges of the sides 10. The top 16 is provided with a central opening 21 through which the screw 6 passes.
l/Vhen the device is assembled the invert ed cup portion 4t lies between the top 16 and the iiange 13 and the pivot screw 6 passes through the top, the cup, the tube, and is thread-ed into the ear 111. The arm 1 which is attached to the cup may be swung in a horizontal plane about the said pivot 'screw as an axis. The screw may be tightened to produce sufficient rictional resistance on the cup so that the arm will remain in any desired position. The ears 19 in the notches accurately locate the top 16 relative to the body portion 8 and when the device is fastened against the wall the back 15 is held in plac-e by engagement with said wall and the front edgeI o the bottom 1S engages the front portion 11 preventing movement in an outward direction.
The electric conductor wires 2 passing CII through 'the tube l and out its open rear end into the cup a, extend downward through the open bottom of the cup and out ot the back ot the bracket through a hole 22 in the back and in most cases a corresponding hole is cut in the wall to which the bracket is attached so that the wires may also pass through it.
The body member, friction member and the cup portions ot this device are all readily manufactured lrom sheet metal by dies which makes them extremely cheap to manufacture. rEhe arm 1 is made from tubing and only requires a very simple operation to prepare its rear end as described and the actot bra/Zing or welding it to the cup member 4 is a simple matter and is quickly and cheaply done.

l. A light bracket comprising a tubular arm., an inverted cup-shaped member tastened 'to one end of said tubular arm, a body member having vertical flanges to engage a wall surface and a horizontal liange to engage and support the lower edge oit the cup-shaped member and a friction member having ears to lit into notches in the body member and adapted to engage the 'top oi the cup-shaped member, and a pivot screw passing through the friction member, the cup-shaped member and screwed into the body member substantially as described.
2. A light bracket comprising an inverted cup-shaped member, a tubular arm extending inside of the cup-shaped member and fastened thereto, electric wires extending through the tubular arm and out ot the bottom olz the cup-shaped member, a body member made oll a single piece oit' sheet metal having vertical tlanges to engage a wall surl'ace, spaced apart side member, and a Yliront member, a horizontal Flange integral with the trout, member and adapted to support the inverted cup-'shaped member, an ear integral with the l'ront member having a 'threaded opening, a lrietion member comprising integrally formed top, back and bottom members, said top member having ears to lit within notches in the sides ot the body member, and a pivot screw extending respectively through the top member, the cup-shaped member, the tube, and screwed into the threaded opening oit said ear on the front member, all substantially as and Ytor the purpose described.
