"MEYER 1?. LEVINE, 0F MOUNT VERNON,
ooMrAnY, I1\T0., or ARLINGTON, NEW JEnsnY, A CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
GAME DEVICE.
To all whom 2'1 may concern:
. Be it known that I, MEYER P. LEVINE, citizen of the United States, and residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to game devices as well as to the structure of a unit constituting a part of a game device which may be used for many purposes,-and theobject of the invention is toprovide a substantially forkshaped body on which is detachably or permanently fixed numerals, characters or other symbols in the construction of a gameor for other purposes; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified comprising a unit in connection with" which a card member or designated sheet may be detachably mounted said card member or sheet being printed, lithographed or otherwise designated on one or both faces thereof to represent the characters of a predetermined game or games or for other purposes; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of one unit of a game made according to my invention;
Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig.
Fig. 3 a perspective view of a part of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and, y I
Fig. 4 a perspective view of a modified form of construction which I employ.
In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive I have shown one form of construction comprising a block member 10 composed of any suitable material, for example, wood or compositions and,
in the construction shown the member 10 is oblong and rectangular in form and one face thereof is concave as shown at 11 and-pro vided at the opposite sides thereof with shoulder portions 12 and with gro0ves13 as NEW YORK, nssieuon TO' -'IHE EMELOID clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. A :w
card or sheet member .14is also employed,
and this card or sheet member is of a thick: ness to adapt its insertion into the grooves 13 of the member 10 and to fit snugly in the concave face 11, said card or sheet assuming a substantially curved position, and by'reason of this construction the card or sheet 14 is held against accidental displacement from the membertlO.
In the construction shown, one face of the card or sheet 14 is marked, printedorotherwise designated to represent thecharacters of the game of dominoes as indicated at 15 in Fig. 1 of the drawing, 'while the other sideface of the card, shown-in Fig. 3 of the drawing, is marked, printed or otherwise designated to represent two characters 16 and 17 of a deck of cards. n
In making the game of dominoes, it will be understood that twenty-eight of the blocks or members 10 will be employed and the usual characters of the game of dominoes'will be fixed to one face of'the cards or sheets 14 of the separate blocks, and by reason of the fact that the game referred to was wellknown in the art but one block or member 10 is shown, and. it will be understood that the other of the blocks or members will. be I correspondingly formed. I call attention to U. S. Patent No.1 ,165,- 984 granted to Albert B. Lefier, Dec. 28, 1915 on a pinochle-domino game device in which twenty-eight blocks or cards 10 or the cards 14 thereof on the opposite sides of said cardswith reference to the domino characters thereon. In this way by simply re versing the cards 14 in the members 10 either game may be played, and itwill also be un derstood that while 1 have referred totwo specific games, I am not necessarily limited to the application of any specific game to the cards 14, nor to the use of any specific num ber of the members 10 with the cards 14 thereon, and for example the Chinese/game may be constructed along these:lines, fur} ther the members-10' may be used for any purpose other than a game device or: as 0on stitutinga unit of a game device."
have shown In Fig, 4 of the drawing, I
a modificationin which I substitute for the member 10 a member 18 composed of a strip of suitable material fashioned to form a central concave-convex portion 19, and side shoulder portions 20 having recesses 21 for etainingi h ca ds 1. in P i ion and i P dinas e memb rs 2. 9 1 low e d Of which are beaded or flanged as shown at 23. The structure of the member 14L is substan-. tially similar to that of the member 10 with the exception that in Fig; 4 of the drawing it is of sh-ell formation, while in F igs.,1 and agorare'drawvingme member 10 is solid in construction.
above stated, it will be understood that my invention is notnecessarily limitedto the specific use thereof herein shown and described'inthe construction of a specific ame or games, as it will be apparent that its device may be used for many purposes without, changes. in or modifications of the construction 'hereinshown and described, and withinthe scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
"The reason 'for making the member 10 comparatively thick is to facilitate its moun tingendwise ona table or other support and for this reason the members 18 are Erovided with the side extensions 22, wherey'the same result may be accomplished.
;-;Haviag fully described my invention, what I'c'laiinas'new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent, is
a gani'e. deviceof the class described, a member elongated and rectangular in general 'formjone face of said member being provide'd'atthe opposite side edges thereof withshoulders'havinggrooves on their inner faces, "said face of the member being depressed-'betweensaid shoulders to form a'subs't'anti'ally concave surface and a characterized cafd, the transverse dimensions of which are greater than the distance, between the grooves 1 n said shoulders whereby when said card 1s mounted'upon the first named member between the shoulders thereof, said card will spring intosaiid concave surface and fit snugly thereon.-
2. 'In'a gamede'vice of the classdescribed, a "memberelong'atd and rectangular in generalform, one face of saidmember being provided at the opposite side"edges thereof with sh'oulders having grooves on their inner faces, said face of the member being depressed between saidshoulders to form a substantially concave surface and a characteriidcard, the transverse dimensions of which aregreater than the distance between the grooves in saidshoulders whereby when said card is'mounted upon the first named member between the shoulders thereof, said card will spring into saidconcave surface andfit snugly thereon, 'andsaid card being characterized on both faces to represent two independent games.
3. In a game device of the class described, a member elongated and rectangular in general form, one face of said member being provided at the opposite side edges thereof with shoulders having grooves on their inner faces, said face of the member being depressed between said shoulders to form a substantially concave surface, and a characterized card, the transverse dimensions of which are greater than the distance between the grooves in said shoulders whereby when said card is mounted upon the first named member between the'shoulders thereof, said card will spring into said concave surface and fit snugly thereon, and said card being characterized on one face to represent the game of dominoes and on the other face with characters representing the game of pinochle.
4. In a game device of the class described, a game member one face of which is'co-ncave throughout its length, the oppositesides of said face of the member being provided with inwardly projecting flanges, a card detachably mounted in connection with said member, the transverse dimensions of said card being such as to fit snugly upon and in parallel relation to the concave face thereof and retained in such position by said flanges, and one or both faces of said card being characterized to represent predetermined games. i
5. In a game of the'classdcscribed a game piece, one face of which is concave and a characterized part in the form of a resilient card adapted to be mounted and fit snugly upon the concave face of said game piece andmeans on said game piece engaging the edges of said card for retaining the same in position under tension.
6. As an article of manufacture, a card or game apparatus, comprising a supporting substance, a character-carrying layer of relatively thin material, said supporting substance being provided with a concaved surface limited by projecting flanges, and the thin layer of appropriate dimensions to fit within said flanges and along the concaved surface, to'be retained therein by its normal resiliency, said projecting flanges being of greater extent than the thickness of said thin layer'to protect and partially conceal the characters on the thin layer.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention Ihave signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 7th day of September 1923.
